我们分析一下，当你第一次学习一篇新的课文的时候，假如这篇课文对你来说有一些难度，你往往会倾向于把一句句英语译成中文，然后再试图理解这一句句话的意思。但当你第二十遍读这篇课文的时候，也就是说当你对这篇课文非常熟悉了的时候，你是不会再走这样一条路线来理解课文的。不知不觉地，你已经从一条三角路线：英语字面－－翻译成中文－－领会意思，过渡到了一条两点成一线的路线：英文字面－－直接领会意思！－－这就是背诵或熟读的意义。它强迫我们直接用英语思维，虽然这时的英语思维是一种被动思维，－－是我们先见到文字，然后再领会意思，而不是先在大脑里有了一个idea,再形成自己的文字或语言，但这毕竟是一种英语的直接思维，而不再借助汉语。想一想，假如我们自己在说英语时，必须先在脑子里形成一句汉语，再把这句汉语译成英语，这样说英语能流利吗？

这就是背诵或熟读的意义！

高中时，我的英语老师赵传信老师为了鼓励我们多背诵，讲了这样一个故事：
