He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said. The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”4.What do we know about Holmes two years ago?A.He had only one job.B.He earned a lot as a barber.C.He offered free haircuts to the poor kids.D.He was the organizer of Back to School Bash.5.The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that _______.A.Holmes is very strict with the kidsB.Holmes also learns a lot from the kidsC.being a fluent reader needs plenty of practiceD.many kids have trouble in reading a storybook6.What can we learn from the last Paragraph?A.Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today.B.Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes.C.Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity.D.Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber.7.What is the best title for the text?A.The Storybook BarberB.Back to School BashC.Reading Counts A LotD.Care About the KidsAny schoolchild knows that a whale breathes through its blowhole. Fewer know that a blowhole is a nostril (鼻孔) slightly changed by evolution into a form more useful for a mammal that spends its life at sea. And only a dedicated expert would know that while toothed whales, such as sperm whales, have one hole, baleen (鲸须) whales, such as humpback and Rice whales, have two.Even among the baleen whales, the placing of those nostrils differs. In some species they are close together. In others, they are much further apart. In a paper published in Biology Letters Conor Ryan, a marine biologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, suggests why that might be. Having two nostrils, he argues, helps whales smell in stereo (立体空间).Many types of baleen whales eat tiny animals known as zooplankton (浮游动物), whichthey catch by filtering (过滤) them from seawater using the sheets of fibrous baleen that have replaced teeth in their mouths. But to eat something you first have to find it. Toothed whales do not hunt by scent. In fact, the olfactory bulb—the part of the brain that processes smell—is absent in such creatures. But baleen whales still have olfactory bulbs, which suggests smell remains important. And scent can indeed give zooplankton away. Zooplankton like to eat other tiny creatures called phytoplankton (浮游植物). When these are under attack, they release a special gas called dimethyl sulphide, which in turn attracts baleen whales. Most animals have stereoscopic senses. Having two eyes, for instance, allows an animal to compare the images from each in order to perceive depth. Having two ears lets them locate the direction from which a sound is coming. Dr Ryan theorized that paired blowholes might bring baleen whales the same sorts of benefits. The farther apart the sensory organs are, the more information can be extracted by the animal that bears them. The researchers used drones to photograph the nostrils of 143 whales belonging to 14 different species. Sure enough, baleen whales that often eat zooplankton, such as the North Atlantic right whale, have nostrils that are farther apart than do those, such as humpback whales, that eat zooplankton occasionally. Besides allowing them to breathe, it seems that some whales use their blowholes to determine in which direction dinner lies.8.What do we know about whales’ nostrils according to the first two paragraphs?A.They are adapted ones.B.They are developed merely for smell.C.They are not easy to detect.D.They are fixed universally in numbers. 9.What plays a role when baleen whales hunt zooplankton?A.The teeth that baleen whales have.B.The smell that phytoplankton send.C.The sound waves that zooplankton create.D.The chemical signals that zooplankton give off.10.How is the concept of stereoscopic senses explained in paragraph 4?A.By quoting a theory.B.By using examples.C.By making contrast.D.By making inferences.11.What is the position of nostrils related to according to the last paragraph?A.The sense of smell.B.The possibility to attract food.C.The ability to locate food.D.The ability to communicate. In a world where everyone has their own opinions on just about everything, it’s common for people to be critical of each other’s mistakes and imperfections without noticing their own. Some individuals mistakenly think it’s their responsibility to make you into a better person. They do this by first pointing out your shortcomings directly and then providing advice on how you can improve. So what is the possible solution to criticism? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, please stop. Make a conscious decision rather than highlight the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.It’s crucial to stay connected to what the other person is talking about, and listen without getting upset, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve myself? As for chronic criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary. In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.12.What might the author think of people who like to judge others?A.Self-centered.B.Responsible.C.Talkative.D.Warm-hearted. 13.What does a person mean by saying “OK” according to Paragraph 3?A.He thinks the advice is helpful.B.He completely agrees with the comments.C.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.D.He defends himself with the response. 14.What is the recommended action for dealing with chronic criticizers?A.Embrace their views.B.Criticize them in return.C.Avoid interaction if needed.D.Engage with them regularly.15.What is the most suitable title for the text?A.The Art of Giving Criticism B.Mastering Self-Defense against Criticism C.Dealing with Personal Relationships Flexibly D.The Path to Self-Improvement through CriticismLessons that are Learned from the OlympicsThe Olympic Games are enjoyed by everyone. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making. After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge. He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse — like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships andobserve what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”4.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?A.He was fond of traveling.B.He enjoyed being alone.C.He had an inquiring mind.D.He longed to be a doctor.5.Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?A.To feed the animals.B.To build an ecosystem.C.To protect the plants.D.To test the eco-machine.6.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?A.To review John’s research plans.B.To show an application of John’s idea.C.To compare John’s different jobs.D.To erase doubts about John’s invention. 7.What is the basis for John’s work?A.Nature can repair itself.B.Organisms need water to survive.C.Life on Earth is diverse.D.Most tiny creatures live in groups. The next time San Francisco residents stop a taxi, they may step into a car with no one behind the wheel. Driverless taxis are now allowed to come on the city’s streets. On June 2, 2022, Cruise, a division of General Motors (GM), was approved to charge for rides in its self-driving cars, becoming the first company allowed to operate commercial driverless cars in a major US city.Though Cruise is regarding it as a big win, its self-driving cars aren’t totally free to run on the streets of San Francisco as they please. Cruise vehicles will be limited to transporting passengers in less crowded areas of the city between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The speed limit is 30 mph. They are also not allowed to operate in heavy rain or fog. The rules are meant to reduce any injuries or accidents.Cruise plans to launch the service gradually with a team of just 30 cars. The first robotaxis will be improved versions of GM’s Chevrolet Bolt. However, the company is seeking approval to get its custom-built Cruise Origin on public roads. The driverless electric vehicle has no wheels or pedals (踏板) and can attain highway speeds. The car consists mostly of a siting space, where passengers can face each other.Cruise’s ability to obtain the commercial permit to operate is a big step forward. However, the company still has to convince passengers that its technology is safe. Manyremain concerned about safety. A 2021 survey by the American Automobile Association found that 74 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle. It remains to be seen how the new driverless taxi experiment will play out in San Francisco. But based on the vast number of companies that are racing to develop self-driving vehicles and the tens of thousands of people on waitlists for robotaxi rides, the Cruise pioneering program is at least set for popularity, if not success.8.What can we learn about the Cruise’s driverless ride services?A.The services have turned out to be a great success.B.The services receive great support from the public.C.The services have run in some major cities of the USA.D.The services are limited to some regions of San Francisco.9.What does the author describe in detail in paragraph 3?A.The feature of Cruise Origin.B.The future of self-driving cars.C.The original plan of the company.D.The new version of Chevrolet Bolt.10.What is the attitude of most Americans towards the self-driving taxis?A.Doubtful.B.Opposed.C.Favourable.D.Unconcerned.11.What can be the best title of the text?A.Cruise Offers Free Self-driving Ride ServicesB.Self-driving Cars Are Coming to San FranciscoC.Self-driving Vehicles Are Popular in Major CitiesD.Companies Begin to Charge for Rides in Self-driving CarsFirst impressions can set a lasting tone, but there is often something doubtful. Psychologists have documented a phenomenon known as the liking gap, by which two people meeting for the first time routinely underestimate how much their counterparts (对应方) like them. A new study finds that the liking gap occurs in group settings too and hinders how well groups function. In one experiment, the researchers divided 159 participants into groups of three and asked them to have a conversation. They then surveyed the participants individually abouthow much they liked each of their partners, how much they thought each partner liked them, and how much they thought their partners liked each other. On average, people liked their partners more than they believed their partners liked them, and thought themselves to be the least liked in the group. In a subsequent experiment, the researchers asked similar questions of engineering students who had worked together in design competitions for varying lengths of time. Here, too, people tended to underestimate the degree to which they were liked, regardless of how long they had known their teammates — and their dim views of their own likability reduced their willingness to ask others for help, give honest feedback, and work together in the future.A final experiment involving a broad sample of workers showed that the misperceptions (误解) were strongest among teammates and that they decreased team effectiveness and job satisfaction. It also found a possible explanation for the liking gap: People tend to focus on positive thoughts when reflecting on how much they like someone else (“I’m happy that she got a promotion”) but fall victim to more negative ones when considering how others view them (“I got a promotion, so she might be green with envy”).Managers should think carefully not just about how teammates regard one another but about how team members think they themselves are regarded, the researchers say; correcting misperceptions could boost team satisfaction and performance. “If only people knew how positively their teammates actually felt about them, they might communicate better, feel more included on their teams, and be happier overall with their jobs,” they write.12.What does the liking gap refer to?A.Misjudging others’ opinions on us.B.Approval among different age groups.C.A type of common social anxiety disorder.D.Preventing others’ evaluations of us.13.What did the experiment in paragraph 2 reveal?A.People were shy to give honest comments.B.People tended to think little of their partners.C.People were quite demanding towards others.D.People were not very confident about themselves.14.What do the researchers suggest managers stress?A.Employees’ viewpoints on themselves.B.The relationship between team members.C.Employee performance and job satisfaction.D.Communication between leaders and members.15.What can be the best title of the text?A.How Much Counterparts Like UsB.Why First Impressions Can Last LongC.What Perceptions Teammates CorrectD.How the “Liking Gap” Affects Group WorkIf you’ve been on the job hunt in the past few years, you’ve probably had to do at least one phone interview. Phone interview s are becoming increasingly popular as the method employers use to select the candidates they want to speak to in person. 16 .17 On the one hand, the interviewer can’t see you, so you don’t have to worry about how to dress, how to sit, or even making eye contact. On the other hand, you can’t use any of those strategies to impress your interviewer; they form their opinion of you based only on what you say and how you sound.Luckily, this incredibly simple tip might be just what you need to gain an edge. 18 If you’re wondering how your smile could possibly affect the opinion of a person who can’t see it, you’d be surprised. 19 It makes you “sound happier, lighter, more accessible and much friendlier” according to career blogger Coach Joan. You’ll sound more energetic and interested right from the start, and the person on the other end of the line will immediately feel more at ease with you.Joan suggests standing by a mirror during the interview to make sure you’re smiling the entire time. Even if you feel it silly at first, you’ll quickly get used to it, and your smile will probably help ease your nerves, too! Plus, using a mirror during a phone interview is great practice for an in-person one, since you can’t exactly look in the mirror during one of those!20A.It comes down to a single word: smile.B.When you smile you wake up every cell in your body.C.The nature of phone interviews can be a mixed blessing.D.Usually phone interview s serve as the first step in a job hunt.E.Smiling actually has a major impact on the way your voice sounds.F.Hopefully, the super-simple trick offered here can make a huge difference.G.So the next time you land a phone interview, get ready to start smiling right from “Hello”.二、完形填空Ben was bothered every time he went through the kitchen. Chinese pianist Tian Jiaxin explores creative performances and crossover cooperations with traditional Chinese music, with the hope of bringing the music of the East to the Western world.Tian attended regular school instead of studying at a music school in her childhood. This enabled her to absorb China’s rich culture and understand the bigger picture later in her pursuit of a career as a professional pianist. “There’s so much to grasp when explaining a piece. What we`re conveying is not only the notes, but the culture behind the music,” Tian said.As a Chinese pianist, Tian is looking to add more depth to her performances, stressing the contrast between Eastern and Western cultures. “No matter which country I am performing in, I always include Chinese music in my program. With Western pieces, I hope to show the world that a female musician from China can perform the music that they are familiar with and love.” Tian says that she believes her mission is to make China heard on a wider stage.Tian believes that music is developing over time and that music from different ages has its own unique meaning. “I’ve found that people’s understanding of Chinese music is often limited to certain pieces like Jasmine Flower,” Tian said. “However, there are so many great pieces of Chinese music that are unacquainted outside of China. So, I always try to feature both the time-honored classics of Chinese music and the newly created pieces,” she added.“Chinese music has the magic to cause resonance(共鸣) with the audience and convey the various and deep culture of Chinese civilization,” Tian said.4.What can we learn about Tian Jiaxin from the first two paragraphs?A.She went to music school at a young age.B.She adapted some well-known Chinese pieces.C.She is a professional pianist known for her unique style.D.She believes the culture behind each piece should be conveyed.5.Which of the following best explain “unacquainted” underlined in paragraph 4?A.Unknown.B.Unpopular.C.Unacceptable.D.Unlimited. 6.What does Tian say about Chinese music?A.It is setting the fashion.B.It develops at a low speed.C.It delivers rich culture of China.D.It holds little appeal for foreigners. 7.What can be the most suitable title for the text?A.Differences Between Eastern and Western MusicB.Chinese Cultural Fueling International Music TrendsC.A Pianist Combing Chinese Music with Western KeysD.A New Generation of Artists Promoting Chinese CultureIn late 2021, The Road of Tang Poetry, a book co-authored by Nobel Prize-winning French novelist Le Clézio and Professor Dong Qiang, was published by People’s Literature Publishing House in China. This book also represents a practice of cross-cultural dialogue.Le Clézio regards the Tang Dynasty as the golden age of Chinese poetry. Due to their efforts, Le Clézio and Dong simplified complex issues and broke time and space limitations to examine five outstanding poets from the Tang era.Nature, women, and wine are themes of common concern to Chinese and foreign poets alike. Influenced by European poetic traditions, Le Clézio was amazed the first time he read Li Bai’s Sitting Alone in Face of Peak Jingting. The peace and harmony when the man is alone with nature, as conveyed in the poem, deeply impressed Le Clézio, who loves nature deeply. The poem even inspired him to look for his own “Mountain Jingting”, where he could sit facing its peak like Li Bai and lose himself in nature. In addition to Li Bai, other Tang poets, such as Du Fu, Bai Juyi, and Zhang Ruoxu, also highly praised nature through poetry. Like them, foreign poets like British and German Romantic poets sang nature’s praises. When trying to understand Chinese poetry, Westerners must have “windows” through which to read. For example, due to insufficient knowledge of Chinese language and culture, French poet Judith Gautier relied heavily on her Chinese teacher Ding Dunling to explain the Chinese texts when she was translating classical Chinese poetry. The path of spreading Tang poetry through joint efforts made by Chinese and Frenchscholars should be an energetic, inclusive stream of poetry that welcomes mutual learning, as a saying suggests, “Poetry is a stream that continually flows.”8.What can we learn about The Road of Tang Poetry?A.It was published in France.B.It was written by Le Clézio.C.It won a worldwide prize in 2021.D.It studied five poets in the Tang Dynasty. 9.Which aspect of Li Bai’s poem impressed Le Clézio most?A.The outstanding skill of the poet.B.The beautiful description of nature.C.The man’s peace while staying in nature.D.The action of the man sitting facing the peak.10.What does the underlined word “windows” in paragraph 4 refer to?A.Application of some modern tools.B.Translation of Chinese original texts.C.Knowledge about German Romantic poets.D.A good command of Chinese language and culture.11.What is the text?A.A news report.B.A book review.C.A research paper.D.A short story.Lake Mary Jane in central Florida, where people living along the lake like to go boating and swimming and watch the wildlife, is under pressure from development. Orange County, which surrounds the lake, is one of the fastest-growing counties in Florida. A development planned for a site just north of Mary Jane would transform nineteen hundred acres of wetlands and cypress forest into homes. In an effort to protect herself, Mary Jane is suing (起诉). The lake has filed a case (立案) in Florida state court, stressing that the development would negatively impact the lake, causing concrete, distinct, and visible injuries. Mary Jane’s case is the first in American history. Never before has a lifeless slice of nature tried to defend its rights in the court. “It is long past time to recognize that we are dependent on nature and the continued destruction of nature needs to stop,” Mari Margil, director of the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights, said in a statement. The concept that natural objects like woods and streams should have rights was first put forward half a century ago, by Christopher Stone, a law professor who was assigned to teach University of Southern California’s introductory course on property law in 1971. Heexplained how ownership rights had developed over time and why our natural objects like trees or even rocks should also be given rights. This little thought experiment set off a heated debate nationwide. Each time there is a movement to give rights to some new things, the proposal is bound to sound odd or frightening or laughable. However, this extension of rights, Stone argued, was needed to address an unavoidable problem. So long as natural objects were valued only in terms of their worth to humans — for the use of humans they could, quite legally, be destroyed.Despite the fact that the developer is pushing to have Mary Jane’s case dismissed, arguing that the rights the lake wants do not — and cannot — exist, people are starting taking Stone’s words seriously. Even Stone’s critics had fun with his idea. There’s no way to get back to the past. The lake’s wish is pretty clear: It just wants to be left alone.12.What challenge is Lake Mary Jane facing?A.The negative effect of the locals’ leisure activities.B.The loss of the wetlands due to the climate change.C.The ever-increasing wildlife population in the area.D.The housing development affecting its environment.13.What’s Mari Margil’s attitude towards the filed case?A.Intolerant.B.Unclear.C.Approving.D.Doubtful. 14.What’s the purpose of Christopher Stone’s object rights concept?A.To inspire his students’ curiosity.B.To evaluate the value of natural things.C.To avoid being laughed at by his critics.D.To keep people from destroying nature. 15.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Stone will face more criticisms.B.The influence of the case is great.C.Lake Mary Jane is bound to win the case.D.The claim of Lake Mary Jane is ridiculous.二、七选五How to Write a Movie ReviewWhether it’s for pleasure or a job requirement, writing a good movie review can be auseful exercise. 16 If you’ve recently watched a film and want to share your opinions about it, here are some tips to help you compose a wonderful movie review.Follow your main text with a short plot summary. It’s good to give readers an idea of the movie you’re reviewing. Give a brief summary of the main characters, the setting and the central conflict of the movie. Never break the number one rule of movie reviews: don’t give too much away. 17Move into your analysis of the movie. Write several paragraphs discussing the interesting elements in the movie that support your points. Discuss the acting, the direction, the cinematography and the setting, keeping your writing clear and easy to understand. 18 Use plenty of examples to back up your points. If you make a statement about the movie, back it up with a descriptive example. Describe the way scenes look, the way a certain person acted, camera angles, and so on. 19 In this way you are giving your readers a feel of the movie and continuing to express your comments on the film at the same time.20 . You could treat your review like a formal college essay. But it’s more interesting if you make it your own. If your writing style is usually humorous or interesting, your review should be no exception. If you’re serious or dramatic, that works, too. Let your language and writing style reflect your unique view and personality — it’s much more entertaining for the readers.A.Give it some personality.B.Don’t ruin the movie for your readers.C.It is necessary to keep a humorous writing style.D.You should first watch enough movies on your own.E.You can use dialogues to help you express your views.F.So don’t use too many technical terms about film making.G.It allows you to explore your personal connection with a film.三、完形填空When other teenagers hang out with friends in the summer vacations.
