Christmas with my family is magical。 We enjoy the festivities, spend
time together, give each other gifts and eat a lot of delicious food。 And
the menu always includes Mum’s home-cooked dishes, Dad’s prime
rib, and Aunt Charlotte’s pies. The amazing thing is that everybody is
100% genuine and there are no negative attitudes。
After I became a vegan, I went to my mother’s house to spend the
holidays with my family。 I had told my mother over the phone about my
decision, but she didn’t say anything。 She wanted to leave me to do the
explaining。 And I knew that I would be questioned。 I also knew that I
would need to prepare my own Christmas feast, because I wanted to show
my family that I ate very well indeed. So I had a plan. I cooked some vegan
food and put it in the refrigerator.
When everyone was called in to take their seats at the dinner table, I sat
down and patiently waited as dishes were passed back and forth。 Don't
get me wrong—I did take a serving of the two things that I could eat: the
dinner bread and some olives. As everyone else’s plates were piled higher
and higher, my family began to notice that my plate was rather empty.
Looks were exchanged across the table, and some of my family looked
embarrassed, maybe even a bit guilty. There was a silence as my entire
