情态动词重点知识梳理

一、情态动词基本用法:

情态动词是一种本身有一定的词义,但要与动词原形一起使用,给谓语动词增添情态色彩,表示说话人对有关行为或事物的态度和看法,认为其可能、应该或必要等。

二、情态动词的分类

情态动词有四类:

①只做情态动词:must,can(could),may(might),ought to

②可做情态动词又可做实义动词:need,dare

③可做情态动词又可做助动词:shall(should),will(would)

④具有情态动词特征:have(had) to,used to

三、情态动词的特点

情态动词无人称和数的变化, 情态动词后面跟的动词需用原形,否定式构成是在情态动词后面加"not"。

个别情态动词有现在式和过去式两种形式, 过去式用来表达更加客气, 委婉的语气, 时态性不强, 可用于过去,现在或将来。

情态动词属非及物动词,故没有被动语态。情态动词没有非谓语形式,即没有不定式,分词,等形式。

四、重点用法

用法

can 1.表示能力时一般译为can't 1.can’t可译为“不会” “能、会”,尤其是生来具备的能力。

2.表示许可,常在口语中。 2.当句子表推测时,用can’t表达”不可能”

3.表示推测,可能性,意为“可能”,常用于否定句和疑问句中。

3.can’t还可用来回答“ May I …? ”

could 1.can的过去式,意为“能、会”,表示过去的能力。 couldn't 不会,不能

2.could在疑问句中,表示委婉的语气

may 表示请求、许可,比can正式。 may not 可能不

表示推测,谈论可能性,意为“可能,或许”,一般用于肯定句中。

may的过去式为might,表示推测时。可能性低于may。 might not 可能不 表示希望、祈求、祝愿,常可译为“祝愿”

must must表示主观看法,意为“必须、一定”。 mustn’t 表示禁止,不许。

must表示有把握的推测,用于肯定句,指百分百肯定。 可用于以may表示要求时的否定回答中。

need 表示“需要、必须”,主要用于否定句和疑问句中 needn't 不必

用need提问时,肯定回答为must,否定回答为needn’t或don’t have

to。

shall 表示征求对方意见(多用于第一、三人称)

should “应该” ,可表示劝告、建议、义务、责任等。 shouldn't 不应该

had better意为“最好”,没有人称的变化,后接+动词原形,其否定形 式为:had better not。

will 表示意愿、意志、可用于多种人称。

would will的过去式,表示过去的意愿,但是在疑问句中,征求建议,不表示过去,而表示委婉语气。 wouldn't 不愿

六、情态动词表示推测

1)must表示肯定的推测100%的肯定,一般用于肯定句中。

例:He must be at home because the light is still on.(他一定在家,因为灯还亮着。)

2)Should表示推测的可能性比较大,must的可能性小一点。

例:It is already 10 o’clock now they should be there.(现在已经10点了,他们应该到了。)

3)can表示推测时一般用于否定句或疑问句。

例:Who is knocking at the door? Can it be the postman?(谁在敲门?会不会是邮递员?)

could表示推测时,语气can比要弱,说话者留有余地 例:—Could it be an animal?—It could not be, because it is not moving.

4)may表示推测,用于肯定句。might也可以表推测,只是表示其可能性较小于may。

例1:The man may be your new teacher.(这个人可能是你的新老师。)

例2:—Where is Mr Li? —He might be working in his office.(-李先生在哪里?-他可能在他的办公室工作。)
