Who was the thief?People are not so honest as they once were. The temptation to steal is greater than ever before -- especially in large shops. A detective recently watched a well-dressed woman who always went into a large store on Monday mornings. One Monday, there were fewer people in the shop than usual when the woman came in, so it was easier for the detective to watch her. The woman first bought a few small articles. After a little time, she chose one of the most expensive dresses in the shop and handed it to an assistant who wrapped it up for her as quickly as possible. Then the woman simply took the parcel and walked out of the shop without paying. When she was arrested, the detective found out that the shop assistant was her daughter. 这是一个比较状语从句。
句中not so+adj.+as这个结构表示没有……那么……。
和not as+adj.+as这个结构表达的意思相同。
如：He is not so tall as his father.=He is not as tall as his father.他没有他父亲高。
not so/as+adj.+as的结构也可以和than引导的比较级的句子进行替换。
如：He is not as tall as his father.=He is less tall than his father.People are not so honest as they once were.=People are less honest than they once were.2. The temptation to steal is greater than ever before -- especially in large shops. 偷窃的诱惑力比以往任何时候都要强烈--特别是在大的商店里。
句中动词不定式to steal作为后置定语，用来修饰temptation，表示偷窃的诱惑力。
又如：The temptation to smoke is strong for him.对他来说吸烟有很强的诱惑力。
3. A detective recently watched a well-dressed woman who always went into a large store on Monday mornings.一名侦探最近注意上了一位穿着讲究的妇女，她总是在星期一上午进入一家大商场。
这是一个定语从句，句子who always went into a large store on Monday mornings.用来修饰前面的名词woman。
well-dressed表示穿着考究的，类似的还有well-educated受过良好教育的，well-behaved行为端庄的。
如：He is a well-educated person with good manners.他是个受过良好教育、有礼貌的人。
He is a well-behaved man.他是一个举止得体的人。
4. a.One Monday, b.there were fewer people in the shop thanusual when the woman came in, c.so it was easier for the detective to watch her.有一个星期一，当这位妇女走进这家商场时，里面的人比往常少，因此，侦探比较容易监视她。
One Monday是时间状语。
b句是一个由when引导的时间状语从句，说明主句情况发生的时间。
当这位妇女走进商场的这个时候，商场里的人比往常少。
c句中的watch不是手表或观看的意思，应该翻译为监视。
如：Ella was scared that someone was watching her.有个人在监视埃拉，这让她很害怕。

整个句子是一个由and连接的并列句。
and后面的句子与and前面的句子主语相同，所以为了避免重复，and后面的句子省略了主语he。
原句应该是She handed it to an assistant who wrapped it up for her as quickly as possible. 这个句子又是一个定语从句，句中who wrapped it up for her as quickly as possible. 是用来修饰和限定前面的名词assistant。
wrap up表示包裹。
如：The Christmas presents were wrapped up in paper.圣诞礼物是用纸包裹起来的。
6. The girl 'gave' her mother a free dress once a week! 那姑娘每星期“送”她母亲一件免费的衣服。
gave在句中打引号，是为了表示讽刺意味。
不是真的送，在此应该译为偷。
