Many people think that summer vacations are too long.

A longer break costs parents more money. It means more costs for

babysitters, summer programs, or camps. When children are away from

school, working parents must make other arrangements.

First, summer reading skills can fall behind when there is a long vacation.

Every year, teachers spend much of September (九月) trying to teach

students what they forgot over the summer. In schools, we learned reading

rules and reading for fun. Students can show progress (进步) in a long

summer vacation.

Second, teenagers who have a summer job make better workers in the

future. These teenagers learn to be responsible for something. They learn to

be on time too.

There are other reasons too why summer vacations can be bad. Some

children don't have a sure meal every day when they are away from school.

When school won't help children to get proper clothes or food, summer

vacations can hurt low-income students.

Every year since 2008, American Film Institute (AFI) has announced its

list of Top 10 Movies. This year, the AFI picked 13 films instead of the

usual 10.

Not only were there 13 films on the list. There were 13 directors too.

Two of the films, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity, were directed by African-American directors.

“This was a year of certainty and seeding promise,” said Bob Gazzale,

President and CEO of AFI. “AFI Awards is a year in, year out endeavor (努力). It’s our way of saying ‘thank you’.”

When we thank someone, we sometimes give them a gift. AFI does that
