wellknown being the circle of yellow stars on a blue background. This site introduces other symbols such as the European anthem and motto. The European flagThe European flag is the symbol not only of the European Union but also of Europe's unity and identity in a wider sense. The European flag consists of 12 golden stars in a circle on a blue background. The stars symbolise the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe. The number of stars has nothing to do with the number of member countries, though the circle is a symbol of unity. The European anthemThe melody used to symbolise the EU comes from the Ninth Symphony composed in 1823 by Ludwig Van Beethoven, when he set music to the Ode to Joy,Friedrich von Schiller's lyrical verse from 1785.The anthem symbolises not only the European Union but also Europe in a wider sense. The poem Ode to Joy expresses Schiller's idealistic vision of the human race becoming brothers—a vision Beethoven shared. In 1972,the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's Ode to Joy theme as its anthem. In 1985,it was adopted by EU leaders as the official anthem of the European Union.Without words,in the universal language of music, this anthem expresses the European ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity. The European anthem is not intended to replace the national anthems of the EU countries but rather to celebrate the values they share.Europe Day,9 MayThe ideas behind the European Union were put forward on 9 May 1950 by the French foreign minister,Robert Schuman. This date is now celebrated as a key moment in the creation of the EU.9 May,or Europe Day,is the anniversary of the ‘Schuman declaration’.Speaking in Paris in 1950,Robert Schuman(the French foreign minister)proposed a new form of political cooperation for Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. His vision was the creation of a supranational European institution that would manage pooled coal and steel production.A treaty creating such an entity was signed just under a year later and came into force in July 1952.Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union. At an EU summit in Milan in 1985,it was decided that 9 May would be celebrated as ‘Europe Day’.Europe Day is an opportunity for activities and festivities designed to bring the EU's institutions closer to the public, and the bloc's peoples closer to one another. The EU motto“United in diversity” is the motto of the European Union. It signifies how Europeans have come together,in the form of the EU,to work for peace andprosperity, while at the same time being enriched by the continent's many different cultures, traditions and languages.Money and the EUThe EU budget is funded from sources including a percentage of each member country's gross national income. It is spent on efforts as diverse as raising the standard of living in poorer regions and ensuring food safety. The euro is the common currency of most EU countries.Where does the money come from? The EU obtains revenue not only from contributions from member countries but also from import duties on products from outside the EU and a percentage of the valueadded tax levied by each country. How is the money spent? The EU budget pays for a vast array of activities from rural development and environmental protection to protection of external borders and promotion of human rights. The Commission,Council and Parliament all have a say in how big the budget is and how it is allocated. But the Commission and EU countries are responsible for the actual spending. The euroThe euro—used every day by some 332 million Europeans—is the most tangible proof of cooperation between EU countries. Its benefits are immediately obvious to anyone travelling abroad or shopping online on websites based in another EU country. The Economic and Financial CrisisThe economic crisis has prompted intense and sustained action by the EU's national governments, the European Central Bank and the Commission since it erupted worldwide in 2008.All have been working closely together to support growth and employment, protect savings, maintain a flow of affordable credit for businesses and households, ensure financial stability, and put in place a better governance system for the future.。
