Cell phone towers are forbidden. The closer you get to the telescope, the greater the restrictions. There's a 16-kilometer radius(半径) around the observatory where radio-controlled items, even toys, cannot be used.Telescope employees even work in a special room that blocks electromagnetic waves from leaving it. "Here imagine a submarine(潜艇), water cannot get inside, and so this room is an electric submarine. No electromagnetic waves can get into this room, just as you can't go beyond it," Michael Holstein, an observatory officer, said. The size of a football field, the telescope is so sensitive that it could pick up signals sent from an alien world. And scientists can't wait for that to happen. "All the signals that we now receive with the help of telescopes are signalsthat come from cosmic objects - stars, galaxies. We have not yet receivedanything from intelligent civilizations," scientist Richard Lynch said.Local people respect the work of the scientists. "Yes, we aredifferent. Many would say that we live the old-fashioned way, in the past. But for us, it's just the way of life that we have always lived," Sherry said."When we want to meet friends, we just call each other on a wire phone. And instead of sitting in front of your screen, we talk, we go fishing, to the mountains," resident Sherry said. For the latest news, residents read the weekly local newspaper. When she's looking for a phone number, Sherry reaches for the phone book. And instead of Facebook, Sherry enjoys daily conversations with her customers. Old-fashioned life at Green Bank14.(★★★)Over millions of years, penguins(企鹅)have developed a keen sense of where to find food. Once they're old enough, they set off from the shores on which they were hatched for the first time and swim long distances in search of tasty fish like anchovies and sardines. But they don't search directly for thefish themselves. For example, when young African penguins head out to sea, they look for areas with low surface temperatures and high chlorophyll(叶绿素) because those conditions signal the presence of phytoplankton(浮游植物). And lots of phytoplankton means lots of plankton(浮游动物), which in turn means lots of their favorite fish. Well, that's what it used to mean.Climate change plus overfishing have made the penguin feeding grounds a mirage(海市蜃楼). The habitat is indeed plankton-rich-but now it's fish-poor. Researchers call this an "ecological trap.""It's a situation where you have a signal that previously pointed an animal towards good quality habitat. That habitat's been changed, usually by human pressures. The signal stays, but the quality in the environment [deteriorates]."Richard Sherley, a zoologist at the University of Exeter and his team used satellite imaging to track the African penguins from eight sites along southern Africa. Historically, the birds benefited from tons of fish off the coasts of Angola, Namibia and western South Africa, but now they're going hungry."I was really hoping we'd see them going east, and finding areas where the fish had moved to but it ends up being quite a sad story for the penguins." said Richard. The researchers calculate that by falling into this ecological trap, African penguin populations on South Africa's Western Cape have declined by around80percent.Some research groups are exploring the idea of moving chicks to a place where they can't get trapped, like the Eastern Cape. But Sherley thinks that a longer-term solution means making and carrying out rules to create more sustainable(可持续的) fishing industry, something that he says needs public support.(1)How do penguins find their food?A. They discover fish with their keen sense.B. They swim long distances directly for fish.C. They make signals to each other when finding fish.D. They look for warmer and greener areas.(2)What is an ecological trap for the African penguins?A. A trap set to catch penguins.B. A good fish habitat with few fish.C. A habitat unsuitable for fish.D. A mirage on the sea.(3)What does the underlined word "deteriorates" in the fourth paragraph mean?A. Get worse.B. Get better.C. Stay the same.D. Become suitable.(4)What can be done to help the penguins in the long run?A. Move the penguins to other places.B. Create nature reserves for penguins.C. Keep a balanced fishing industry.D. Increase the population of penguins.第二节(满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.15.(★★★)Depression is a very serious condition that can be caused from broken hearts. You have to develop the right mindset(思维模式) to overcome it.(1)Reflect on your feelings and don't hide them. If you're emotionally hurt, don't hide these feelings. Don't pretend to feel something or avoid what you're going through. This is the process needed when you've suffered from a broken heart.(2) Instead, you need to build yourself back up. You'll have to go through the tough part first. Once you've let it out , then you can take the next step to recover from your broken heart.Forgive if you're angry.(3) That is life. Take something positive out of the situation and hold onto that. You have to accept what has happened, then take the approach of forgiving and accepting.(4) Never ignore a good friend or family support. Going through a broken heart should bring you closer to those around you. If you've been in a bad relationship, it should let you appreciate the ones who are still there for you.(5) If you start to be shut off with others, it develops more bitterness, loneliness, along with possible depression.

AThe trouble started at 9:30 p.m. last New Year's Eve, in Newmark. When the fire engines (消防车) arrived at the fire, a very old woman was sitting in a third floor window. The firefighters placed a ladder (梯子) against the wooden house, and 26-year-old Marcus Reddick climbed 35 feet to the third floor. The woman, 60 years old and very fat, was sitting with both feet out of the window. When Marcus reached the top of the ladder, the woman, afraid and nervous, put her two legs around him. Suddenly Marcus fell backwards off the ladder, with the large woman sitting on him. Marcus landed first — hitting a wall beside the front stairs — and broke the woman's fall. She fell no more, but he fell another ten feet down the stairs. When the fire officer reached him, Marcus was unconscious.Within an hour, a doctor told the men that Marcus was nearly brain dead, and would only get worse. Doctors talked of turning off the life-saving machine and asked if the family would like to give away his heart. The answer was “yes”.On January 6, firefighters lifted Marcus' coffin (棺材) — covered with an American flag — onto a yellow fire engine. Hundreds of firefighters from all over the state joined the procession (行列) through Newmark streets. Children watched silently from school windows. The day Marcus died, his heart was given away to a young girl. His family said that it was the second life Marcus had saved.21. What happened last New Year's Eve in Newmark?A. An old woman was killed.B. A fire engine was missing.C. A wooden house caught fire.D. A firefighter was murdered22. After reaching the top of the ladder, Marcus _____.A. was very afraid and nervousB. was knocked off and got hurtC. found it difficult to get downD. couldn't see anything clearly23. The underlined word “unconscious” in Paragraph 2 means “_____”.A. senselessB. homelessC. breathlessD. helpless24. We can infer from the end of the text that Marcus' family might feel _____.A. worried and surprisedB. shy but excitedC. angry and doubtfulD. sad but proudBSome places in the world have strange laws. It’s important for you to know about them before going there.Whoever likes to chew gum(口香糖) may have to leave Singapore. The government really wants to keep the city clean and will fine you for chewing gum. Before you leave for the United Arab Emirates you’d better make sure you aren’t visiting during Ramadan(斋月). During that time you aren’t allowed to eat or drink in public. Tourists have been fined up to $275 for drinking in public.Lovers spend so much time kissing each other goodbye at train stations thattrains often start late. This law—no kissing your lover goodbye at train stations – is rather old, and isn’t in use today in France. In Thailand it’s against the law to drive a car or motorcycle without a shirt on, no matter how hot it is. Punishments are different in different areas and can include warnings and tickets costing about $10. No joke ---the local police will stop you.Studies in Denmark have shown that cars with their headlights on are more noticeable by other drivers than those with their headlights off. Drivers there are required to leave their headlights on even during the day, or they may face a fine up to $100.Do you often buy things using coins? Don’t do it in Canada. The Currency Law of 1985 doesn’t allow using only coins to buy things. Even the use of the dollar-coin is limited (受限制的). The shop owner has the right to choose whether to take your coins or not.Make sure you know about these laws before your next trip. Better safe than sorry.25. What is mainly talked about in the text?A. How to make your trip around the world safe.B. Why there are strange laws in the world.C. Interesting places you can go to around the world.D. Moreover, it seems that people are spending more and more time watching some sort of visual( 视觉的) entertainment, whether it is television, a video tape or a DVD. Therefore, the influence of visual media cannot be ignored. One obvious influence of these media( 媒体) is that watching them induces(诱导) people to buy certain products. Television advertising is widespread and, nowadays, even movie theaters permit advertisements. Another way TV and the movies affect people is that they give people either a broader view of the world or a distorted(扭曲的) one, depending on what type of program they watch. Those who watch news and educational program can learn many new things while those who watch primarily entertainment shows may come to believe that most people in the world possess great wealth and good looks. It may make them become dissatisfied with their own lives. Finally, perhaps the most susceptible viewers are children, who may be unable totell fact from fiction(虚构的事)and may try to imitate(模仿) acts that they see on TV or in the movies, many of which are harmful and dangerous. With the increasing popularity of video entertainment, society must pay attention to these effects. Television and movies, while entertaining and informative, cannot take the place of real experience.28. From the passage, we know that watching television and movies can ________.A. make people change their way of lifeB. make people feel pleasedC. make people live betterD. make people live worse29. The writer holds the view that _______.A. people may take no notice of the effects of the visual mediaB. the influence of the visual media make the world changed greatlyC. people must pay attention to the effects of the visual mediaD. the visual media only affect young people30. What does the underlined word “susceptible” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. popularB. cleverC. wealthyD. easily influenced31. What would be the best title for the text?A. The Reason Why People Watch Television and MoviesB. The Influence of Television and MoviesC. Television and Movies Induce PeopleD. The Importance of Television and MoviesDEngland's highest main-line railway station is in serious trouble, deserted and unmanned since it was officially closed in 1970, Dent, located high in the hills of Yorkshire, wakes up on six summer weekends each year, when a special train unloads(卸载) walkers, sightseers and people who simply want to catch a train from the highest station to its platforms(站台).But even this limited being may soon be brought to an end. Dent station located on the Settel to Carlisle railway line, is said to be surrounded by the most beautiful scenery in the country. But no amount of scenic beauty can save the line because of the British Rail's money problems. It is now an open secret that British Rail sees no future for this railway line. Most of its trains disappeared some time ago. Bridges, built a century ago, are falling down. It is not alone. Half a dozen railway routes in the North of England are facing a similar threat. The problem is an old system and an almost total lack of cash to repair it. Bridges and tunnels are showing their ages, the wooden supports for the tracks are rotting(腐烂) and engines and coaches(车厢) are getting old.On main lines between large cities, the problem is not too bad. There lines still make a profit and cash can be found to keep them in good condition. But on the country branch line, the situation is different. As track wears out, it is not replaced. Instead speed limits are introduced, making the journey longer than necessary and discouraging travelers. If a bridge is dangerous, there is often only one thing for British Rail to do:go out and find money from other places. This is exactly what it did a few months ago when a bridge at Bridling station was threatening to fall down. Repairs were calculated at 200,000 pounds just for one bridge, so British Rail was pleased, and rather surprised when two local councils(理事会) offered half that amount of money.32. Of all the railway routes in Britain, the one which passes through Dent_______A. is the most historic.B. passes through the most attractive countryside.C. is the most expensive route for tourists.D. carries the greatest number of tourists.33. What is the most urgent(迫切的)problem for many country railway lines ?A. Renewing coaches.B. Repairing engines.C. Rebuilding bridges.D. Replacing stations.34. Who would appear to be the people most affected by the difficulties facing the British Rail?A. The people who want to have holidays for touring.B. The groups who are organized.C. Large city people and local people.D. The people who do much business.35. How should British Rail improve the financial situation of the country railway lines?A. By bringing in speed limitsB. By decreasing preserving costs.C. By increasing train faresD. By asking local councils for help 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
