A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals!Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice,at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors,“If John didn't have his head tied on,he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him.It wasn't that he was not clever,as some critical people tended to say,but just very, very absentminded. One hot summer day, professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away.To make the trip more interesting for his young children,he kept the name of the town a secret. However,by the time they arrived at the station,Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit.Luckily,a friend of his happened to be in the station.Heoffered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going. The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.“Oh,my dear,I forgot the name of the town.”“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it.”Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again.Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.Paragraph 1:“What is the matter no w?”asked his w ife.__________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2:Hearing the cry,out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out w hat had happened.______________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________写作规范练(三)写作第一节One possible version:Dear__Josh,I’m__glad__to__hear__from__you__again__and__really__appreciate__your__summer__plans.__Actually, I’ve already informed my parents of my schedule, which they think highly of.What I want to do first is have a good stay with my grandparents, learning how to do housework, like cooking and cleaning out a room.Badminton is my favorite game, and I will learn from Wang Lei, the best player in my class, and practise with him in the nearby gym three times a week. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house.Being afraid that he would make matters worse again,Mrs. Smith decided to follow him,who then called a taxi.By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.。

Small talk. Chitchat. These are the short conversations we have at parties, while we wait in line at the store, at family events or work. Sometimes we make small talkwith people we already know but not well. Often we have to make small talk with complete strangers. Many people find such small talk about random topics difficult. Somepeople say they hate it. Others say small talk is a waste of time. They may even call itidle chitchat or idle chatter, meaning it doesn ’ t do anything. They consider smalltalk not important. However, small talk is important.Small talk can open doors that may lead to larger, more meaningful conversations. Whenyou first meet someone or talk to someone you don’ t know well, it would be awkward to begin a conversation about a really deep topic such as war, politics or the meaning of life.Small talk also gives you the chance to decide if you want to get know that person better or not. Let ’ s say you make small talk with someone at a party. But they onlywant to talk about cats. You may not want to build a friendship with them unless youreally, really love cats.Small talk can also increase your feeling of understanding, or empathy, towardpeople you know but not well. Chatting with a colleague about their child may helpyou to understand more of their life outside the office. This could help build healthy work relationships.Small talk could even help your larger communities—your relationships with neighbors. Exchanging recipe with a neighbor i n your apartment building may make her noises upstairs easier to live with. And small talk may make us happier! In 2011, most commuters( 搭车来回于两地之间的人) in the city of Chicago said they would enjoy“quiet cars” where they sat alone and did not talk to anybody.Researchers at the University of Chicago then asked some participants in a study to talk to people while commuting to work on a train. So far 106 species of lemurs(狐猴) have been identified and nearly all of them are judged to be at risk of extinction, many of them critically endangered. The habitats they depend on—mostly forest—only exist in Madagascar.“Just as fish cannot survive without water, lemurs cannot survive without forest. But less than ten percent of the original Madagascar forest is left,” said Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy, director of the GERP,a center for primate research in Madagascar.“I believe that within the next 25 years,if the speed of the deforestation(砍伐森林) remains the same, there would be no forest left. And that means no lemurs left on this island.”The pressure to clear the forests comes from a rapidly growing but extremely poor population seeking to open up new farmland.A form of slashandburn agriculture sees trees cut down and bushes burnt to make way for fields of rice and other crops. The only longterm solution, according to Professor Ratsimbazafy,is to engage communities and persuade them that the forests—and the lemurs—have a value that is worth safeguarding. In one protected area,GERP is hiring local people to watch over the forest, making the point that the lemurs can be worth more alive than dead.It is also supporting new ways of living in the local village including fishfarming and beekeeping, and teaching new techniques for ricegrowing that do not require constant expansion into the forest. But there is an additional threat to the lemurs—a continuing demand for bushmeat(野味).Although it is illegal to kill lemurs, poachers(偷猎者) are still setting traps for the animals or shooting them.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________写作规范练(五)第一节应用文写作One possible version:Dear Sharon,I’m Li Hua.
