As China's economy grows at a fever pitch1, and more and more people are moving into the major cities and industrial centers, traffic congestion becomes the order of the day. Traffic congestion not only creates headaches for commuters, but also reduces productivity by taking away valuable time from work. This sickness that plagues2 our cities must be at least put under control, if not cured. Some people insist that more roads be built to accommodate the increase in traffic, while others think that enlarging the capacity of public transit systems (buses, subway, trains) is the answer. Building more roads would mean a lot of land will be taken—not a very good prospect for economic, agricultural, and environmental reasons. On the other hand, forcing everyone to take public transit will bring inconvenience to those whose use of their cars is essential to their work. Putting more buses on the road may have the opposite effect as big buses tend to clog3 up narrow streets. Building an extensive subway system can be the ideal answer, but that is very expensive. Clearly, we cannot go for one single solution.A compromise4must be struck between the different solutions. My personal view is that for cities that have plenty of unused land, more roads should be built. Having special lanes reserved for bicycles and motorcycles should encourage more people to use bicycles and motorcycles instead of cars. As a long-term solution, extensive subway, or surface monorail5 systems should be built for all the major cities. 【知识点击】1.pitch n.程度2.plague v.折磨;使苦恼3.clog v.阻塞;堵塞promise n.妥协,和解;折中5.monorail n.单轨铁路【自主探究】1.What's the best title for this passage? Almost all things are related to the word “Green”, say, green buildings. A green building means not only the color of the paint. Also, it refers to environmentally friendly houses, factories and offices.Green building means “reducing the impact of the building on the land”, Taryn Holowka of the US Green Building Council in Washington D.C. said. According to Holowka, buildings account for 65 percent of total US electricity use. But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often located near public transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on developed land, so that the buildings don't destroy forests.Marty Dettling is the project manager for a building that put these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country's first green high-rise building. According to Dettling, “We've reduced our energy use by onethird and our water by 50 percent.”The Solaire cuts energy in part by using solar power. “On the surface of the building we have solar panels(电池板)whic h change the sun's energy into electricity,” Dettling explained. The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room. In addition, the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day. The Solaire cuts water by reusing it.Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however. Some people think that things like solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy source. Anyhow, Holowka said, “It is going to take off.”56.“A green building” most refers to a(n) _______________building according to the passage.A. not ripe or modernB. covering green colorC. environmentally friendlyD. fresh or new57.All of the following are the reasons why green buildings are environmentally friendly EXCEPT that_______________.A. they can reduce energy and water use in many waysB. they are often built on an area of land which has already been used for buildingsC. people can collect energy from sunlight to heat water and produce electricityD. they are equipped with lots of modern but cheaper equipment58.According to the passage, green buildings don't usually stand on faraway and inconvenient areas because_______________.A. the places will cause a lot of trouble and inconvenience to construction workB. cars will give off more pollution and more forests will be destroyedC. the environment of the places is not better than that of big citiesD. the places are poorly equipped and unfriendly59.The main idea of the passage may be_______________.A. settling designed the first green building in the USB. energy shortage calls for buildings of new designC. the Solaire serves as a model of high buildingsD. green buildings help save environmentBIt's impolite to spit out the first bite of your dinner. But to a type of Australian snake, this rude behavior is a matter of life and death. The snake, called a floodplain death adder(蝰蛇),eats two types of frogs that are hard to stomach. The frogs produce chemicals to defend them from predators(猎食者).One of these species, the Dahl's frog, can kill a snake that tries to eat it. The other species, the marbled frog, is less dangerous but still tough to eat. When attacked, it produces a glue like substance. Leaves and branches get caught up in this material, making a big sticky mess that gets in the way of anything trying to swallow it. A marbled frog can even get stuck on the head of an attacking snake. Both frogs have good defense methods. But the floodplain death adder knows how to get around each of them.Floodplain death adders quickly strike these frogs, using their poisonous teeth to inject poison. But then, instead of swallowing their dinner immediately, the snakes sit back and wait for their preys to become safe to eat. That’s because both the Dahl's frog's protective toxin(毒素) and the marbled frog's glue break down over time. After a while, the frog toxin is no longer poisonous and the glue is no longer sticky. The two substances break down at different rates, and floodplain death adders seem to know the difference. An adder waits for a different length of time depending on the species of frog it just struck. The stickiness of the marbled frog glue decreased by as much as two-thirds after just 10 minutes. And that's just about how long an adder waits before eating a marbled frog.On the other hand, the snakes wait for about 40 minutes before eating a Dahl's frog. That’s enough time for the frog's toxin to break down into harmless substances. But even a quick strike gives a taste of the Dahl's frog's toxin. After striking such a frog, a floodplain death adder thrashes(翻腾)around and lies on its back with its mouth open. It’s like the snake has just had a mouthful of chili pepper.By comparison, when given frogs that have no chemical defenses, floodplain death adders eat their prey immediately after striking. Snakes, despite the fact that they've got this tiny pea-size brain are clearly capable of recognizing what kind of frog they've bitten.60.What's the best title of the passage? _______________A. A dangerous mealB.A snake-floodplain death adderC. Two types of frogs-Dahl's Frog and Marbled FrogD. The method of killing frogs61. The underlined word “it” in the 3rd paragraph refers to the_______________.A. marbled frogB. Dahl's frogC. floodplain death adderD. glue62.The glue produced by the marbled frog is used for_______________.A. sticking the snake's headB. making a safe place to live inC. preventing anything from trying to attack itD. killing an attacking snake63. What's the floodplain death adder's method to make the frogs safe to eat ?A. They thrash around with their mouths open.B. They sit back and wait for their preys to become safe to eat.C. They inject poison on the preys and wait for the breaking down of their toxin and glue before eating them.D. They quickly strike these frogs.COne of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one's mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,” and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that.”I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons. Then he related an incident and I began to remember clearly the incident he was describing.I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place. There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were stacked(堆放)three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display back together, so I went to work. The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees examining some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal. He severely scolded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, obviously the manager did not.64.The author was _______________when he wrote this article.A. about 8B. about 18C. about 23D. about 1565.Who should have been blamed for knocking off the stacks of cartons? _______________A. The author.B. The womanC. Her books mainly described the inter connectedness of nature and all living things.Completing Silent Spring took Carson four years. First published in The New Yorker in June 1962,the book alarmed readers across America. It described how DDT entered the food chain and accumulated (堆积) in the fatty tissues of animals, including human beings, and caused cancer and genetic damage.Carson begins by describing exactly these effects in the first chapter, creating strong images and drawing the readers in. As the book continues, she gives various examples of how insecticides(杀虫剂) are not only unsuccessful, but actually very costly and damaging. She also explains about the biological controls which are less expensive and much more efficient.A single application on a crop, she wrote, killed insects for weeks and months, and not only the targeted insects but countless more, and remained poisonous in the environment even after it was washed out by rainwater. Carson concluded that DDT and other pesticides had definitely harmed birds and animals and had destroyed the entire world's food supply. The book's most famous chapter, A Fable for Tomorrow, described a nameless American town where all life—from fish to birds to apple blossoms to human children—had been “silenced” by the harmful effects of DDT. The most important effect of Silent Spring, though, was a new public awareness that nature was so easily destroyed by human intervention. Rachel Carson had made a brave proposal: that, at times, technological progress is so basically at odds with(与……不一致) natural processes that it must be prevented.68.What are Rachel Carson's books mainly concerned about? _______________A. The relationship between man and nature.B. The balance of natural systems.C. The interconnection of nature and living things.D. The pollution of the environment.69.According to the text, Silent Spring_______________.A. didn't draw the readers' attention when first publishedB. mainly describes people's quiet lives in an American townC. effectively tells people how to keep the balance of natureD. showed the harmful effects of DDT on nature70.Rachel Carson thinks that the more efficient way to kill insects is to use _______________.A.DDTB. human controlsC. biological controlsD. technical progress71.The publication of Silent Spring makes people_______________.A. understand the author's outstanding writing talentB. realize the importance of technical progressC. aware of the necessity of environmental protectionD. rethink the harmful effects of developing industryEOutside her shabby cottage, old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They weredetermined to find out if she really was a witch. They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick and take flight. Suddenly, the old lady's work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen-a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on top of the haystack. The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. With only three legs, it was hard for Sooty to keep up with the old lady. The cat provided proof- the children were sure that only a witch would own a black cat with three legs. There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretching out to gather her precious egg. Taking the egg in one of her hands, she began to climb down when, without warning, the box broke and the old lady fell.“We have to go and help her,” whispered Amy.“What if it is a trick?” replied Ben.“Don't be silly,Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs already,” reasoned Meg. “Come on Amy, let’s go.” The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack.Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady's face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken. “Go and get Dad,” Amy yelled to her brother. “Tell him about the accident.”The boys did not need another excuse to leave. They ran as fast as they could for help, hoping that Mrs. Tailor would not wake and turn the girls into frogs.72.Why were the children hiding in the tree? _______________A. They wanted to watch Mrs. Tailor do her housework closely.B. They were playing a hide-and-seek game.C. They wanted to find out if the rumors about Mrs. Tailor were true.D. They were pretending to be spies.73. He invented a finger alphabet, which is still in use. People can make the sign for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf peopl e can “read” and understand them.Around the whole world, there are special TV news programs for deaf people. Usually the newsreader tells the news in sign language with the words appearing on the screen. The actors in the Theatre of Deaf use hand signs. Putting two hands together means a sandwich. Making a roof with two hands shows a house. And one finger in front of one’s mouth can mean being quiet. It is not just deaf and hard of hearing children who use sign language. Another large number of sign language users are hearing nonverbal children who are nonverbal because of some diseases, and brain disorders or speech disorders. For parents, sign language provides a way of quick communication, especially for those whose attention spans (跨度) may be very short or language very limited. And when you wave to a friend, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you are saying, “I want to be friendly”. Babies who ________can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop the traffic holds up his hand. But the 61-year-old man from Shandong Province has made scientific breakthroughs(突破), which made great contributions to China’s food security(安全). His main work has been in achieving the higher output of corn production.Li, who holds the world record for the highest output of summer corn, once says, “Corn has a life; it sings and dances. If you listen clearly, it can speak to you.” He started his research in 1969 when he was 20 and just dropped out of a high school. He then read an article which pointed that corn output per mu in the USA was six times higher than that in China. He was shocked and set out to work on just a small piece of land round the clock to see if he could increase the output. He often went to the field with a flashlight late at night, if he had been away during the day. By careful nurturing (照料) he managed to double the output.Li Denghai was awarded the “China Award for Significant Contribution to the Maize (玉米) Industry” in 2005, and the same year the company named after his own name came into the market on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Before the operation, Mr. Palmer was happy to leave the housework to his wife. However, since he had a cornea transplant, he has become liking to do the dusting and washing up, and developed the good habit he didn’t have before.Mr. Palmer said, “Since having t he transplant operation, my vision is almost 20/20. I can now notice every spot of dust and dirt, and can’t help but have a go at cleaning it up. For some reason seeing the grime(尘垢) gets on my nerves and I have to do something about it. It started as a joke that I must have been given the cornea of a woman. There’s a reason why men don’t clean like this and I think it’s because we just don’t see the dirt, but I see it everywhere I go.”Mr. Palmer developed corneal disease Fuchs Dystrophy six years ago. The condition caused the inner surface of the cornea — the thin layer that covers and protects the iris (虹膜) and pupil (瞳孔) that is responsible for two thirds of the eye’s vision — to slowly die. This meant that over time, the sight of Will’s right eye had d ropped so much that everything appeared unclear. It was also sensitive to light. Later, Mr. Palmer got the cornea transplant.Scientific studies have suggested that up to a third of organ transplant patients have inherited changes in their personalities, preferences and skills from their donors. Researchers have proposed various theories, including the idea that memories are stored in organ tissue as well as the brain and can therefore be passed on to transplant patients.46. T he passage intends to.A. warn us to protect our sightB. give an example of transplantC. introduce a new cure for eye diseaseD. offer us some news on medicineDDolphins are the second brightest creatures after humans in the world — even more clever than chimpanzees(黑猩猩). Experts say it is now time for d olphins to be treated as “non-human persons” after research showed their brains have many features connected with high intelligence. Just like us: A bottlenose dolphin shakes hands. They believe it is cruel to keep such intelligent animals in amusement parks, or to kill them for food or by accident when fishing. Some 300,000 whales and dolphins die in this way every year.A study carried out by Lori Marino, a zoologist at Emory University in Atlanta, scanned (扫描) the brains of dolphin species and compared them to the brains of humans, monkeys and chimpanzees. She said, “Many dolphin brains are larger than our own and second in whole only to the human brain when corrected for body size.”Dolphins have long been known for their intelligence. However it had been believed that chimpanzees —who can achieve the intelligence levels of three-year-old children —were the brighter of the two.New studies suggest that in fact dolphins —especially species such as the bottlenose — are more intelligent. They have particular personalities, a strong sense of the self and can think about the future. They are also “cultural” animals, with new types of behavior being picked up by one dolphin from another. In one piece of research, bottlenose dolphins were shown to be able to recognize themselves in a mirror and use it to observe various parts of their bodies.Dolphins’ famous intelligence has also made its way into fiction. In Douglas Adams’s story, the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, dolphins escape from Earth after humans fail to understand their warnings that the planet is about to be destroyed.51. W hy are dolphins considered as “non-human persons”?A. Because they are highly intelligent creatures.B. Because they can shake hands like humans.C. Because they can amuse humans in parks.D. But a growing number of them are attending smaller ones.Douglas Bennett, the president of Earlham College in Indiana, has written several articles aimed at helping students choose a college that best fits their needs. He says one of the important things for the international students to consider is the size of a school. He says Earlham College is small for a reason. “We’re that small because we think we educate much more effectively and much more powerfully because we stay small. It stretches everyone more. It draws everyone into more different kinds of activities.”Of course, there are also good arguments for attending a larger school. Many big schools are widely recognized. And in some cases that might lead to more job interviews than a degree from a lesser known college. Larger schools also have more money, which can mean more resources for education and research. In addition to size, Douglas Bennett says there are other important things to consider. For example: Which programs at the school are the strongest? Some schools have stronger programs in the sciences. Others are stronger in t he liberal arts. Also, what do the school’s top students go on to do after they graduate? What kinds of activities are offered that might add to the educational experience? Are there sports teams? What about a radio station or newspaper? But Douglas Bennett says . “The most important choice you make is who you choose to be yourself. If you’re prepared to bring your best self to the college, then it matters where you go to college. On the other hand, if you choose not to prepare to work very hard, it doesn’t matter where you go.”56. W hat’s the best title of the passage? (within 8 words)57.
