When Frida Kahlo's paintings were on show in London,a poet described her paintings as“ a ribbon (丝带)around a bomb”.Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time.Sadly, she is actually a much_bigger_name today than she was during her time.Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City ,Kahlo suffered from polio(小儿麻痹症)at the age of seven. Her spine (脊柱)became bent as she grew older. Then,in 1925,her back was broken in several places in a schoolbus accident.Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but nothing was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering,Kahlo taught herself to paint. In 1929,she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist.Rivera's strong influences on Kahlo's style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s,known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s,even in her home country. Her first onewoman show in Mexico was not held until 1953.For more than a decade after her death in 1954,Kahlo's works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.

(A)Scientists say they’ve developed a system using machine learning to predict when and where lightning will strike. The research was led by engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland.European researchers have estimated between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power outages(停电),destroy property, damage electrical equipment and start forest fires. For these reasons, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict and control lightning. But no system has been created to effectively predict lightning. The system tested in the experiments used a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning. The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to four main surface conditions:air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity(湿度) and wind speed. The atmospheric data was placed into a machine learning algorithm(算法),which compared it to records of lightning strikes.Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.Amirhossein Mostajabi is a PhD student at the institute who led the development of the method. He said,“Current systems for gathering such data are slow and complex and require costly collection equipment like radar or satellites.”“Our method uses data that can be obtained from any weather station,” Mostajabi said.“This will improve data collection in very remote areas not covered by radar and satellites or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.1.Why have climate scientists tried to predict and control lightning?A.To collect relative data.B.To create a scientific system.C.To do research in relation to machine learning.D.To reduce the destruction lightning has been causing.2.The four mentioned surface conditions include all the following EXCEPT .A.wind speedB.air pollutionC.relative humidityD.air temperature3.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?A.Lightning.B.The system being tested.C.The atmospheric data.D.The machine learning algorithm.4.What can we learn about Mostajabi from the passage?A.He developed the method and the system by himself.B.He thinks the current systems are too slow and simple.C.He is a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.D.He believes their system does with amazing speed—within a week of the quake, the American Red Cross had raised $22 million. The reason?People were donating via their mobile phones.2Gone are the days when people donated door by door.In today’s world of computers, smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches, charities can now reach more people than ever before.Social media in particular has had a great impact on charity.3This enables charities to raise money extremely quickly,as in Haiti. And the quicker aid can be delivered, the more lives can be saved.Individual fundraising has also benefited. Most people are now so well-connected through sites like Meta that asking people to contribute to your chosen cause is easier than ever.New,innovative ways of donating are being thought up all the time. For example,if you want to support a good cause and keep fit at the same time, you can use an app called Charity Miles.4For every kilometer you cover, the app’s sponsors will make a donation to a charity of your choice. There’s also Snapdonate, which allows users to donate simply by taking a photo of a charity’s logo with their smartphone. The app recognizes the logo and allows users to immediately make a donation through their phones. This cuts out the need for entering payment details on charity websites, and makes the process of donating small amounts to multiple charities much simpler.Apps like these are growing in number, and that can only be a good thing.5A.People were eager to aid others in trouble.B.The app can track the distance you run or cycle.C.News of disasters spreads quickly around the world.D.Charity Unit 23 Conflict李仕才【阅读理解】“Congratulations,Mr.Jones! It’s a girl.”Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different answer from every man who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers.Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy(怀孕) was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child,it is obvious that the change from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task.Yet,unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this re-socialization process.Although many good books have been written about American mothers, only recently have some books discussed the role of a father. It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father’srole, although difficult,is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother’s role. The mother’s role seems to require a complete transforma tion of daily routine and adaptation to a new life,on the other hand, the father’s role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we have mentioned the fact that growing numbers of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.1.According to the author, being a father________.A.brings a feeling of excitement to some menB.has a different meaning for those who have daughtersC.makes some men feel proud and others uneasyD.means nothing but more responsibilities2.It is stated in the passage that______.A.some parents are not prepared to have a childB.young couples do not like children at allC.working couples do not have much time to take care of their childrenD.many parents look forward to having a boy as their first child3.The transition to the mother’s role requires that the wife____.A.changes her life style in a quite different wayB.makes a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situationC.stays at home to take care of the babyD.helps her husband in his re-socialization process参考答案: 1.C; 2.A; 3.B解析:本文主要讲述从丈夫的角色转换到父亲的角色是一个很难的过程。

Consider bringing along a cooler with lunch items and snacks — so you don’t have to worry about staying near one of the park’s more developed areas. SHANGHAI—Health experts in Shanghai are calling for more protection for young children as the latest research shows about half of the youngsters are suffering from secondhand smoke.About 45 percent of children suffer passive smoking in families,50 percent in public places, and almost 6 percent on public transportation, shows a research released by the Shanghai Children's Medical Center on Tuesday.“Not only adults but also children and newborn babies are at risk for the adverse effects of passive smoking, ”said Tang Jingyan, a doctor at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center.“Actually, those young children whose bodies are still growing and developing are more sensitive to the effects of secondhand sm oke.”Research has shown that children who are exposed to secondhand smoke will suffer from more colds, coughs and sore throats, and they are more likely to suffer from bronchitis, pneumonia and will have a higher risk of developing cancer.Doctors even suggested that children suffering passive smoking are more likely to have behavioral problems and may not developmentally as quickly as their peers.Other research by the Shanghai Children's Medical Center has found that more than 80 percent of child patients in the center live in a smoke filled household, where one or both parents smoke.“Though doctors have stressed the harm of passive smoking over and over, it is still hard to reach a totally smoke free home, ”said a pediatrician named Zhang Yiwen, noting tha t parents are often tempted to smoke even though they have learned the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.China has 540 million people suffering from passive smoke,180 million of them younger than 15.The age of smokers is also getting lower, earlier reports said.“There are more young smokers than before. You can see young people wearing a school uniform and carrying a schoolbag light a cigarette on the street. Some of them are even female students, ”said Jing Xingming, a professor of children's development al behavior at the center.“Children like to imitate adults, especially their parents. If parents often smoke at home, it is very likely children will develop a smoking habit, which can cause a vicious circle,”Jin said.Reports from the Ministry of Health said China has about 350 million smokers, of whom 15 million are underage smokers. Also, around 40 million of the country's 130 million children aged between 13 and 18 had tried smoking, and 15 million had become addicted to tobacco.【语篇解读】本文主要说明了许多儿童目前受二手烟的影响,以及二手烟对儿童产生的危害。
I knew a man, a very tall, gentle man, for several years before I found out that he visited prisoners in our local prison, week in and week out for decades. He would write letters for them, carry messages, fetch clothing or books. But mainly he just offered himself. He did not lecture to them, didn’t pick and choose between those he liked and disliked and didn’t look for any return on his kindness. All that mattered was that they were in trouble. Why did he spend time with prisoners when he could have been playing golf or watching TV? “I go in case everyone else has given up on them,” he told me once. “I’ll never give up.”Never giving up is a quality we honor in athletes, in soldiers, in survivors of disasters, in patients recovering from severe injuries. If you struggle bravely against strong opponents(对手), you are likely to end up on the evening news. But in less flashy, less newsworthy forms, devotion to a task, or a person, or an occupation shows up in countless lives all around us.It shows up in parents who will not quit loving their daughter even after she dyes her hair purple, tattoos (纹身)her belly and runs off with a rock band. It shows ill couples who choose to mend their marriages instead of ending it. It shows up in volunteers at the hospital or library, it shows up in unsung people everywhere who do their job well, not because the boss is watching or because they are paid large amounts of money but because they know their work matters.1. Why did the man visit the prisoners every week _______.A. That’s his jobs.B. He wanted to teach them a lesson.C. He was a postman.D. He wanted to show care and offer help.2. From the third paragraph, we can infer that when never giving up is mentioned, people are likelyto relate it to ________.A. unknown peopleB. people facing challengesC. the divorced couplesD. the hospital volunteers3. What quality does the author value most according to the text?A. The courage to fight against strong opponents.B. The kindness of your friends and family members.C. The faithfulness of unsung people around us.D. The strong will of the survivors of disasters.4. The author mentions the story of the gentleman in order to ________.A. introduce the themeB. state a factC. criticize the prisonersD. cover a story本文通过讲述一位绅士每周去探望囚犯的故事引入话题谈及永不言弃的精神时,人们更可能联想到面对挑战的人们,比如文中所列举的运动员、士兵、灾难中的幸存者等等。
But in less flashy, less newsworthy forms, devotion to a task, or a person, or an occupation shows up in countless lives all around us.
If you smoke and you still don’t believe that there’s a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. No one will accuse you of hypocrisy. Let us just say that you are suffering from a bad case of wishful thinking. This needn’t make you too uncomfortable because you are in good company. Whenever the subject of smoking and health is raised, the governments of most countries hear no evil, see noevil and smell no evil. Admittedly, a few governments have taken timid measures. In Britain for instance, cigarette advertising has been banned on television. The conscience of the nation is appeased, while the population continues to puff its way to smoky, cancerous death. You don’t have to look very far to find out why the official reactions to medical findings have been so lukewarm. The answer is simply money. Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It’s almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while the authorities point out ever so discreetly that smoking may, conceivable, be harmful, it doesn’t do to shout too lou dly about it. This is surely the most short-sighted policy you could imagine. While money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better-off if smoking were banned altogether.Of course, we are not ready for such a drastic action. But if the governments of the world were honestly concerned about the welfare of their peoples, you’d think they’d conduct aggressiveanti-smoking campaigns. Far from it! The tobacco industry is allowed to spend staggering sums on advertising. Its advertising is as insidious as it is dishonest. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lungs early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisement always depict virile, clean-shaven young men. They suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense! For a start, governments could begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco advertising and should then conduct anti-smoking advertising campaigns of their own. Smoking should be banned in all public places like theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of the dire consequences of taking up the habit. A horrific warning – say, a picture of a death’s head – should be included in every packet of cigarettes that is sold. As individuals, we are certainly weak, but if governments acted honestly and courageously, they could protect us from ourselves.1.Why do a few governments take timid measures toward smoking?[A] because they are afraid of people.Because diseases cost a lot.[C] Because they are afraid of the cutting down of their revenue.[D] Because they are afraid of manufacturers.2.The tone of this passage is[A] critical.ironical.[C] distaste.[D] amusing.3.What does the sentence “because you are in good company” mean?[A] you are backed by the government. You are not alone.[C] You have good colleagues.[D] Governments are blind to evils of smoking too.4.What is the best title of this passage?[A] World Governments should conduct serious campaigns against smoking.World governments take timid measures against smoking.[C] smoking is the most important source of income to many countries.[D] tobacco industry spends a large sum of money on medical research.
