Most of us don’t like to think too much about rubbish. 1 . However, household waste is a major contributor to our planet’s waste problem.Like it or not, it needs to be managed if we are to have a brighter green future.

When it comes to being responsible for our own rubbish, the best way to approach it is by following the three golden rules of waste management, or the ‘3 Rs’—Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

“The order is important. 2 ,” sa ys Eugene Tay, Director of Green Future Solutions in Singapore. “Recycling still affects the environment and should be done last after reduce and reuse.”

But, when our efforts to reduce and reuse still result in an over flow ing rubbish bin, the advantages o f recycling cannot be ignored. “ 3 ,” says Amy Ho, Managing Director of World Wide Fund For Nature in Singapore. “The damage to our environment could then be slowed down as a result.”

In fact, by recycling just one plastic bottle, you are saving not just the material to make a new one, but you also stop it from getting thrown into a landfill (垃圾掩埋场) for up to 700 years—and that’s before it even starts to rot. 4 .

Recycling is so important that we really have no excuse not to do the simplest of household tasks that will make a difference.

“ 5 ,” says Ho. “Starting with recycling grey w ater for gardenin g purposes, to recycling materials such as glass, p aper and iron—it all reduces the use of raw materials.”

A. We put it in the bin and don’t think too far beyond that

B. The collective action of individuals can make a significant effect

C. It’s important for every household to make good use of grey water

D. Waste reduction and reuse is usually the best way to decrease waste

E. The three rules of waste management should be followed by every household

F. Recycling reduces the use of raw materials and so protects our natural resources

G. Recycling just 10% plastic bottles would keep 90 million kilograms of plastic out of landfills

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. 1 However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑)position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.

Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you’re aware that you’re going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.

Undo your seatb elt. 2 Unbuckle the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn’t going to wait for you to make the cal l.

3 Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car’s electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don’t think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.

Break the window. If you aren’t able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you’ll need to break it w ith an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car. 4

Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. 5 While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you’re doing.

A. Open the window as soon as you hit the water.

B. Surviving a sinking car is not as diffic ult as you think.

C. It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.

D. Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning.

E. In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.

F. This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.

G. But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.

Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. 1 However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expr ession, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. 2 They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

3 This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people
