For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. The MagicianThe revolution that Steve Jobs led is only just beginningWhen it came to putting on a show, nobody else in the computer industry, or any other industry for that matter, could match Steve Jobs. His product launches, at which he would stand alone on a black stage and produce as if by magic an “incredible” new electronic gadget (小器具)in front of an amazed crowd, were the performances of a master showman. All computers do is fetch and work with numbers, he once explained, but do it fast enough and “the results appear to be magic”. Mr Jobs, who died recently aged 56, spent his life packaging that magic into elegantly designed, easy-to-use products. The reaction to his death, with people leaving candles and flowers outside Apple stores and politicians singing praises on the internet, is proof that Mr Jobs had become something much more significant than just a clever money-maker. He stood out in three ways-as a technologist, as a corporate (公司的)leader and as somebody who was able to make people love what had previously been impersonal, functional gadgets. Strangely, it is this last quality that may have the deepest effect on the way people live. The era of personal technology is in many ways just beginning. As a technologist, Mr Jobs was different because he was not an engineer-and that was his great strength. Instead he was keenly interested in product design and aesthetics (美学), and in making advanced technology simple to use. He repeatedly took an existing but half-formed idea-the mouse-driven computer, the digital music player, the smartphone, the tablet computer(平板电脑)-and showed the rest of the industry how to do it properly. Rival firms competed with each other to follow where he led. In the process he brought about great changes in computing, music, telecoms and the news business that were painful for existing firms but welcomed by millions of consumers.Within the wider business world, a man who liked to see himself as a hippy (嬉皮士), permanently in revolt against big companies, ended up being hailed by many of those corporate giants as one of the greatest chief executives of his time. That was partly due to his talents: showmanship, strategic vision, an astonishing attention to detail and a dictatorial management style which many bosses must have envied. But most of all it was the extraordinary trajectory (轨迹)of his life. His fall from grace in the 1980s, followed by his return to Apple in 1996 after a period in the wilderness, is an inspiration to any businessperson whose career has taken a turn for the worse. The way in which Mr Jobs revived the failing company he had co-founded and turned it into the world’s biggest tech firm (bigger even than Bill Gates’s Microsoft, the company that had outsmarted Apple so dramatically in the 1980s), sounds like something from a Hollywood movie. But what was perhaps most astonishing about Mr Jobs was the absolute loyalty he managed to inspire in customers. Many Apple users feel themselves to be part of a community, with Mr Jobs as its leader. And there was indeed a personal link. Apple’s products were designed to accord with the boss’s tastes and to meet his extremely high standards. Every iPhone or MacBook has his fingerprints all over it. His great achievement was to combine an emotional spark with computer technology, and make the resulting product feel personal. And that is what put Mr Jobs on the right side of history, as technological innovation (创新)has moved into consumer electronics over the past decade. As our special report in t his issue (printed before Mr Jobs’s death) explains, innovation used to spill over from military and corporate laboratories to the consumer market, but lately this process has gone into reverse. Many people’s homes now have more powerful, and more flexible, devices than their offices do; consumer gadgets and online services are smarter and easier to use than most companies’ systems. Familiar consumer products are being adopted by businesses, government and the armed forces. Companies are employing in-house versions of Facebook and creating their own “app stores” to deliver software to employees. Doctors use tablet computers for their work in hospitals. Meanwhile, the number of consumers hungry for such gadgets continues to swell. Apple’s products are now bei ng snapped up in Delhi and Dalian just as in Dublin and Dallas.Mr Jobs had a reputation as a control freak (怪人), and his critics complained that the products and systems he designed were closed and inflexible, in the name of greater ease of use. Yet he also empowered millions of people by giving them access to cutting-edge technology. His insistence on putting users first, and focusing on elegance and simplicity, has become deep-rooted in his own company, and is spreading to rival firms too. It is no longer just at Apple that designers ask: “What would Steve Jobs do?”The gap between Apple and other tech firms is now likely to narrow. This week’s announcement of a new iPhone by a management team led by Tim Cook, who replaced Mr Jobs as chief executive in August, was generally regarded as competent but uninspiring. Without Mr Jobs to shower his star dust on the event, it felt like just another product launch from just another technology firm. At the recent unveiling of a tablet computer by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, whose company is doing the best job of following Apple’s lead in combining hardware, software, content and services in an easy-to-use bundle, there were several attacks at Apple. But by doing his best to imitate Mr Jobs, Mr Bezos also flattered (抬举)him. With Mr Jobs gone, Apple is just one of many technology firms trying to arouse his uncontrollable spirit in new products.Mr Jobs was said by an engineer in the early years of Apple to emit a “reality distortion (扭曲)field”, such were his powers of persuasion. But in the end he created a reality of his own, channeling the magic of computing into products that reshaped entire industries. The man who said in his youth that he wanted to “put a ding in the universe” did just that.注意:此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答。

2012年英语专四参考答案(完整版)2012专四听写参考答案(周玉亮版)Nowadays, many of us try to live in a way that will damage the environment as little as possible. We recycle our newspapers and bottles, we take public transport to get to work, we try to buy locally produced fruit and vegetables, and we want to take these attitudes on holiday with us. This is why alternative forms of tourism are becoming popular in the world. There are a lot of names for these new forms of tourism: responsible tourism, nature tourism, adventure tourism, educational tourism and more.Although everyone may have a different definition, most people agree that these new forms of tourism should do the following: first, they should conserve the wildlife and culture of the area; second, they should benefit the local people; third, they should make a profit without destroying natural resources; and finally they should provide an experience that tourists want to pay for.2012专四听力参考答案(周玉亮版)说明:由于是一次性听力并作答,没有反复斟酌,不能保证答案百分百正确,但是能保证百分之九十以上正确。

In New Orleans, it covers every surface that was flooded, from cars and now-dead lawns to the entire contents of flooded homes, stores, hospitals, and schools."When people come back, they are exposed to the sediment," said Wilma Subra, a chemist from New Iberia, Louisiana, who is analyzing the sediment. "It's in their yards and houses."Old Pollution ResurfacingPlaquemines Parish, a rural county on the peninsula south of New Orleans, is now covered with even more toxic sediment than it was two weeks ago, thanks to Hurricane Rita."Six inches up to one foot (15 to 30 centimeters) of sludge," Subra reported.Much of the sludge in Plaquemines is the product of nearby bayous and bay bottoms, where sediment was lifted up by Katrina's and Rita's storm surges. The sediment has been polluted over the years with industrial chemicals and heavy metals, said Subra, who tested the sediment for the Southern Mutual Help Association, a nonprofit organization in New Iberia, Louisiana."These water bodies have received industrial wastes for decades," she said. "This material has toxic chemicals, metals, and organic petrochemicals(石化产品)."Matters have only been made worse by multiple oil spills caused by Katrina and Rita. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 11 oil spills have occurred in southern Louisiana, totaling 7.4 million gallons (28 million liters) of oil, most of which has been contained.Bacteria levels are also especially high in the Plaquemines sludge, said Rodney Mallett, spokesperson for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality."The sewage treatment plants were underwater," he explained. "Between the animal waste and the human waste, you've got a lot of bacteria."Protection KitsHealth and environmental agencies are advising people to avoid contact with the sludge. They recommend that people wear gloves, goggles, and dust masks, and that they wash promptly if exposure occurs.EPA officials are directing people to its Web site () to inform themselves of the contamination risks. But most people returning to the area don't have computers to get that information, said Erik Olson, an attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group."If you [do] read the Web site," he added, "you practically have to have a degree in chemistry to understand it."To better inform people of health risks, the Southern Mutual Help Association and Oxfam America are developing a program to give every returning resident a protective kit. Each kit would contain waterproof suits, goggles(风镜), shoe covers, and masks, along with information about potential hazards, V olunteers would give out the kits at the security checkpoints that now stand at the major entrances to affected cities. The groups have made a hundred demonstration kits, which cost about $100 (U.S.) each to produce, and have shown them to state leaders in Louisiana."The governor is really in favor of this," Subra said. "We just have to determine how we're going to fund them."Toxic Mold BloomsIn addition to the toxic sediment, sprawling blooms of mold have now taken hold in many flooded homes. "The mold is growing everywhere-homes are just coated with it," Subra said. The problem has become so widespread that federal health officials warned Wednesday of allergic reactions and toxic responses to the mold. Professionals should be hired to clean mold that covers more than ten square feet (one square meter), they urged."Those [surfaces] that can't be cleaned need to be removed," said Steven Redd, chief of the Air Pollution and Respiratory Health Branch of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The effects of the mold are already surfacing in Mississippi, where respiratory(呼吸的) problems are among the illnesses doctors there are reporting."We're seeing a lot of asthma from inhaling the mold," said Richard Paat, team leader of a temporary East Biloxi clinic. "And mouth sores from the bad water."Due to contact with unclean water, 33 people in the flood zone have contracted Vibrio infections, according to the CDC. The infections are caused by a family of bacteria that live in contaminated salt water. They can cause serious illness, especially in people with compromised immune systems. To date, six people have died from Vibrio infections."People had open wound and walked through floodwater with sewage in it," CDC spokesperson Von Roebuck said. "And these folks were having these wounds infected with Vibrio."Disaster Response Care"This is a highly contaminated area," said Susan Briggs, the physician overseeing FEMA's disaster-response medical teams in Louisiana and Alabama. Her teams have been inoculating residents for tetanus and Hepatitis A and B. Hepatitis is a danger when people are exposed to sewage, through water or food, Briggs explained. Tetanus canoccur when people cut themselves on unclean materials, as may happen when cleaning debris. The rudimentary(根本的) living conditions in many Katrina-struck areas make it more likely that people will get sick and injured, Briggs said."They have no electricity, no clean water, no air conditioning," she said. "There are collapsed structures and stray animals. There are huge amounts of stray dogs, and people have been bitten."Briggs and other doctors in the area have been treating many cases of diarrhea, rashes, and upper-respiratory illnesses. All of these conditions are to be expected after natural disasters, according to the CDC. But it's too soon to know if these ailments are related to contamination, the CDC's Roebuck said."We're looking at that question," he said. "We'd like to know the answer."1. The passage gives a description of the contamination in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.2. Katrina left New Orleans and other communities tainted with oil and sewage.3. Plaquemines Parish is now covered with even more toxic sediment that it was two weeks ago.4. People are being advised to avoid contact with the sludge by health and environmental agencies.5. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestion 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Among all the animals, the ape is most like human beings. Both people and apes have the similar brain structure, the similar nerve system, and the similar kind of blood. There are four kinds of apes: the chimpanzee(黑猩猩), the orangutan(猩猩), the gorilla(大猩猩), and the gibbon(长臂猿). They live in the deep forests and warm tropical regions of Africa and of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. All apes are covered with brown, reddish-brown, or black hair everywhere on their bodies except their faces, feet, and hands. Their hands each have four fingers and a thumb that helps them grip things the way our thumbs help us. But they also have a thumb on each foot instead of a big toe. Thus they can hold things with their feet also. Having short, weak legs, apes do not walk on the ground very much. However, their arms are very strong. This enables them to swing from branches and travel very quickly from tree to tree. These animals live in small family groups that move from place to place in search of vegetables and fruits. They also eat eggs, small animals, nuts, and insects. When they are tired, they build nests in the trees. But they rarely sleep there for more than a night or two. Then they move on to look for more food. There are some differences among the following three kids of apes. The gibbon is never more than three feet high and weight only about fourteen pounds. The gorilla grows to be six feet tall and weight up to 600 pounds. The orangutan is smaller than the gorilla. It stands three to five feet tall and weight up to 200 pounds.Chimpanzees are the smartest of all apes. They can be taught to sit at a table and eat, to dress themselves, and to do things that human children can do.57. What does the first paragraph tell us?[A] The ape looks like human beings most.[B] People and the ape think alike.[C] People and the ape behave alike.[D] The ape is the most intellectual animal in the world.58. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?[A] All apes are brown or black.[B] All parts of apes' bodies are covered with hair.[C] Apes have weak legs but very strong arms.[D] Apes' arms are strong enough to swim.59. Apes build nests in the trees but seldom sleep there for more than a night or two because ________.[A] They like to live in small family groups[B] They like to move from place to place in search of more food[C] They like to eat eggs, small animals, nuts and insects[D] it rains too often in the deep forests60. Among the three kinds of apes, ________.[A] the gorilla is the biggest[B] the gibbon is only three feet high but it is heavier than the orangutan[C] the orangutan is smaller than the gorilla and cleverer than the gibbon[D] the orangutan can stand up to a great height, but others cannot61. The last paragraph tells us that ________.[A] chimpanzees can do better than human children[B] chimpanzees can do many things that human children cannot do[C] human children can do many things that chimpanzees cannot do[D] the intelligence of chimpanzees is similar to that of human childrenPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.Videodisc holds great promise of helping to meet the needs of American schoolchildren who have problems seeing, hearing, speaking, or socializing. Almost eleven percent of the students aged 3~21 in this country have an impairment that affects their ability to benefit from a regular education program. Handicapped students require special education because they are often markedly different from most children in one or more of the following ways: mentally retarded(发展迟缓的) learning-disabled, emotionally disturbed, deaf, visually handicapped, physically handicapped, or other health impairments. The education of these handicapped children is rewarding but challenging.A special education student usually needs a longer period of time to acquire information. Repetitive teaching techniques are often beneficial, and indefatigable(孜孜不倦的) consistency on the part of the teacher is frequently necessary. Interactive videodisc courseware has characteristics that can be capitalized upon to meet the challenges that special education poses. A videodisc program is infinitely patient. Repetition of any videodisc lesson can continue endlessly, and designers can assure absolute consistency within a program. Most important, according to special educator William Healey of the University of Arizona, is that videodisc "adds an extra dimension of realism for children who need graphic representations."Healey explained that deaf and mentally retarded children especially have difficulty grasping figurative(比喻的)language and higher-order language concepts. He believes that for special education, the power of videodisc lies in the ability of the technology to visually represent language concepts normally taken for granted by non-handicapped persons. Complex figurative language forms such as idioms and metaphors come most readily to mind as being difficult for handicapped learners.62. The special education mentioned in the text is mainly concerned with ________.[A] genius students from day-care centers to colleges[B] students who are fond of computer video games[C] teachers of language in the University of Arizona[D] students who are either mentally or physically disabled63. A videodisc courseware is beneficial to those who have study difficulties because ________.[A] its fancy design is very attractive[B] it allows the user to go back to where he wants to restudy[C] the content of it is healthy and promising[D] it is developed by university professors64. According to Professor Healey, we may infer that mentally retarded children perhaps ________.[A] need graphic representations in order to understand higher-order language concepts[B] are good at studying English idioms but often fail to grasp higher-order language concepts[C] are not very patient with videodisc which helps them to understand the world concepts[D] tend to be deaf as well and have difficulty learning the simple concept "before and after"65. "How are you feeling?" asked Ramon. "Worse than yesterday," replied Frank. "I have a terrible cough, and there's not a drop of medicine in the house.""Cheer up, Frank. I'll send Blackie to the local drugstore for some cough syrup (糖浆). He'll be back in a minute, before you know it." Ramon put a five-dollar bill in Blackie's mouth and the dog ran down the street. "And keep the change," Ramon shouted after him."Oh, Ramon, don't be silly. You know that dog won't be back with any medicine." "Oh yes, he will," replied Ramon. Half an hour later, however, Blackie had not returned. Ramon was feeling embarrassed, and felt angry at his friend's little smile."Something has happened to him, I'm sure," said Ramon. "He obeys me as a rule." Just then Frank saw Blackie at a distance. He hurried to open the door and let him in. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.(1)、What is the main idea of this passage? ________A:It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B:The role of time in social life over the world.C:If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D:Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.答案:B(2)、What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _______ A:A matter of work.B:A matter of life or death.C:You want to see him or her.D:You want to make an appointment with him or her.答案:B(3)、Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend in theA:at 7:00 amB:at 4:00 pmC:at the midnightD:at 4 am答案:B(4)、Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ________A:In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date.B:No misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures about the concept of time. It cannot be explained briefly, as is possible when describing drinking in many other countries. There are special laws to limit drinking, and Americans enjoy their own tastes.AlcoholAmerican laws concerning alcohol differ from state to state and city to city. In some towns, even states, alcohol is not allowed for sale at all except for the very weak 3.2 percent alcohol beer, know n as “three-two” beer. Some places do not allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays, even in shops—you may find a bar with locks on its alcohol shelves. Other places permit alcohol to be sold on Sunday afternoons and evenings, but not on Sunday mornings. In many parts of America, you are not allowed to drink alcohol in a public place. That is, you may not sit in a park or walk along a street while drinking beer, and you cannot even take a nice bottle of wine on your picnic. And in many states you are not allowed to drink alcohol while driving, or even have an opened alcohol bottle in the car. Some bars have a license only for beer and wine. Others are also allowed to sell spirits (烈性酒) and, as Americans say, “mixed drinks”. Many bars have a period known as “happy hour”, often longer than an hour, when they sell drinks at lower-than-usual prices. This is usually around 5 p.m. and may be only on certain days of the week. The Legal Drinking AgeThe legal drinking age differs from place to place but is generally between 18 and 21. Some places permit the consumption of beer at 18 but spirits only at 21. Others permit the consumption only of “three-two” beer from 18 to 21. Young peopl e therefore often drive from one place to another with more free drinking laws. In some parts of the US young people are allowed to vote, marry, raise children, keep full-time jobs, be tried in courts as adults, join the army and even buy guns—but NOT have a glass of beer. In some places people aged between 18 and 21 are allowed to go into bars but not allowed to drink.Another even more interesting aspect of American drinking age laws is that in some places people below legal drinking age are not even allowed to sell alcohol. Proof of Legal Drinking AgeIn most places these drinking laws are fairly rigidly kept. You may, for example, find people lining up to get into a bar and discover that the line is caused by a guard on the door who is asking everybody for identification. If you ask him why he wants to know who you are, he will inform you that he actually wants proof of how old you are. On such occasions Americans often show their driving licenses, which have their date of birth written on them.BeerAmerican beer, with very few exceptions, ranges from the average to the terrible. There are not many types of beer in the US—”light” and “dark” are two terms commonly used.It is therefore normal to order beer simply by brand names. In a restaurant, in fact, i t is quite all right to order “a beer”, and they will tell you what they have.It is not necessary, either, to specify quantity when ordering beer. If it comes in bottles or cans, you will get a bottle or can, and if it’s “on tap”(可以随时取用的),you will get a glass, unless you order a “pitcher”(大酒罐). The latter is very convenient to serve, since you can then take the pitcher and glasses to your table and keep filling up without going back to the bar. It is harder, however, to know how much you have drunk. Some beer comes in bottles with taps that look as if they need an opener, but youcan, in fact, open them up by hand—though you have to be very careful not to hurt yourself. It is possible, in some stores and bars, to find a wide variety of beer from all over the world, especially Western Europe and Australia, and it is fun to try them. Cocktail (鸡尾酒)Cocktails and “mixed drinks” are much more popular and stronger in the US than in Europe, and visitors may not be familiar with some of the term. “On the rocks”, as you probably know, means with ice, while “straight up” or “up” means neat and without ice. There are hundreds of different cocktails, and there is no space here to list all the different names.WhiskeyIn America “whiskey” means bourbon unless otherwise indicated. Bourbon(波旁威士忌)is a rather oily spirit made from corn. Rye (黑麦) whiskey is ca lled “rye” and Scotch whiskey “Scotch”.WineIn bars wine can often be bought by the glass. Don’t be misled by names. “Chablis” is used to refer to white wine, and “Burgundy” to red—Americans seem never to have heard of white Burgundy.21.( ) Limits on drinking in the US are the strictest in the world.22.( ) Alcohol in some states can be sold if they are not very strong.23.( ) In many states people are not allowed to drink alcohol while driving buttheycan keep opened alcohol bottles in the car.24.( ) The legal drinking age in the US is between 18 and 21.25.( ) Americans often show their driving licenses if asked for identification whenthey get into a bar.26.( ) You are requested to clarify how much you want when you order beer.27.( ) Many stores and bars offer a wide variety of beer from all over the world.28.If you say “straight up” when ordering cocktail in the US, you mean you wantit_____________29.In America, “whiskey” usually refers to a kind of oily spirit made from__________________.30.“Rye” is another name for _______________________________III. If we are to solve the nursing shortage, hospital administration and doctors everywhere would do well to follow Beth Israel’s example. At Beth Israel each patient is assigned to a primary nurse who visits at length with the patient and constructs a full-scale health account that covers everything from his medical history to his emotional state. Then she writes a care plan centered on the patient’s illness but which also includes everything else that is necessa ry.The primary nurse stays with the patient through the hospitalization, keeping track with his progress and seeking further advice from his doctor. If a patient at Beth Israel is not responding to treatment, it is not uncommon for his nurse to propose another approach to his doctor. What the doctor at Beth Israel has in the primary nurse is a true colleague.Nursing at Beth Israel also involves a decentralized(分散的) nursing administration. Every floor, every unit is a self-contained organization. There are nurse-managers instead of head nurses. In addition to their medical duties they do all their own hiring and dismissing, employee advising, and they make salary recommendations. Each unit’s nurses decide among themselves who will work what shifts and when.Beth Israel’s nurse-in-chief ranks as an equal with other vice presidents of the hospital. She is also a member of the Medical Executive Committee, which in most hospitals includes only doctors.31. Which of the following best characterizes the main feature of the nursing systemat Beth Israel Hospital?A. The doctor gets more active professional support from the primary nurse.B. Each patient is taken care of by a primary nurse day and night.C. The primary nurse writes care plans for every patient.D. The main difference between a nurse-manager and a head nurse is that theformer________.A. is a member of the Medical Executive Committee of the hospitalB. has to arrange the work shifts of the unit’s nursesC. can make decisions concerning the medical treatment of a patientD. has full responsibility in the administration of the unit’s nurses35. The a uthor’s attitude towards the nursing system at Beth Israel Hospitalis_________.A. negativeB. neutralC. criticalD. positiveQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. The quality of university life is declining under strain from the higher education, leading independent schools in Britain complaining. The warning followed survey of the impressions of campus life gained by students of school. Poor interviewing of theapplicants, infrequent contacts with tutors, worries over student safety, and even complaint over the food were all seen as symptoms of the pressure on universities. Head teachers said that standards could well drop if the squeeze on universities budgets continued. A survey was carried out because of fears that the level of green area in universities had declined. A great number of student suicides had raised concerns among head teachers.Although most of the 6,000 students surveyed were enjoying university life, almost a third were less than satisfied with their course. About one in ten had serious financial problems and some give alarming accounts of conditions around their halls of their residence. Incidents mentioned included a fatal stabbing and shooting outside a hall of residence, the petrol bombing of cars near another residence, and two racist attacks. Nine percent of women and seven percent of men rated security as unsatisfactory in the area where they lived. Stanford University had the lowest satisfaction rating. Lancaster and Kinston universities were rated the safest. The survey confirmed head teachers’ fears about contact between students and tutors slipping, with a quarter of the students seeing their tutors only every three weeks. New students, used to regular contact with their teachers, found it hard to adapt to the change. Interview techniques were a cause for concern, with the school calling for more training of the university staff involved in admissions. Some headmasters complained that interviews were increasingly “odd”. One greeted an applicant by throwing him an apple. Another interview lasted only three minutes. About a quarter of the students found the workload at university heavier than they had expected. Imperial College London, Oxford, and Cambridge universities registered by far the highest workload. There were differences between subjects, with architectures, engineering, veterinary science, medicine and some science subjects demanding the most work. Veterinary science was nevertheless the most popular subject, followed by physiotherapy and history of art. General engineering, economics, computing and sociology were the least popular. The survey also confirmed that previous concerns about possible racial prejudice in admissions to medical courses. Applicants with names suggesting an ethnic minority background had been rejected with qualificationsas good as successful white candidates.36. According to the passage, the main problem existing in the interview of admission is that _______.A. the interviewers often greeted the applicants by throwing an appleB. the interviewers spent only a few minutes interviewing an applicantC. the interviewers were not knowledgeable to interview the applicantsD. the interviewers lack enough training and interview techniques37. From the passage, we can learn that________.A. most students surveyed were satisfied with university lifeB. many head teachers were killed by the students in universityC. veterinary science was popular for its workload was lightD. students were worried about the squeeze on university budgets38. From the passage, we can see that the author’s description of the quality ofuniversity life in Britain is ________.A. objectiveB. subjectiveC. pessimisticD. arbitrary39. Among the following, which is the proper statement of the st atus of the students’ security?A. Fatal stabbing and shooting often happened outside the hall of residenceB. The students in British were so worried about their security in universityC. Students were often watchful against people around their halls of residenceD. The status of students’ security in Stanford University might be awful40. Some women bounced back with the consumption of additional meat or taking iron 53 . Iron deficiency affects many women. The ratio of exercising women with this deficiency, however, is far higher. This is made worse by health-conscious women who often eat a 54 diet which is not iron-rich enough. Women do not usually eat the recommended daily 55 of iron. Any additional exercise may have caused women to be tipped over the edge causing serious iron deficiency.VI.
