Traditional Chinese Medicine
As we all know, traditional Chinese medicine has a long
history in China. It can be called simplified Chinese, which
is a style of traditional medicine built on a foundation of more
than 2500 years of Chinese medical practice. And there are
various forms including herbal medicine, acupuncture, message,
exercise, and dietary therapy. With development of society and
economy, traditional Chinese medicine is influenced by modern
Western medicine.
Because of its variety and development, it is becoming
increasingly popular and recognizes worldwide. I think the
popularity of TCM is that the main ideas in treating disease.
Therefore, I want to say something about the main ideas in
TCM. Firstly, the concept of TCM is that the relationship
between humans and nature is an interactive and inseparable
whole. It means that TCM pursues the unity of humans and nature
and treats many diseases with this theory.
Secondly, TCM wants to reach the level of harmony on heath.
Traditional Chinese doctors hold a principle that a person’s
physical heath rely on harmony in the function of the various
body organs. The various organs of the body are interconnected,
so if you feel sick in your one organ, your other organs maybe have problems.
Third, traditional Chinese medicine pays attention to
individuality. When we see a Chinese doctor, the doctor will
examine you by four ways of diagnosis –look, listen, ask and
feel the pulse. And the doctor will treats a disease based on
full consideration of the individual climatic and seasonal
conditions, and environment.
More and more people believe in using traditional Chinese
medicine. However, some people think that TCM is not scientific.
Compared with Western medicine, TCM has its different strengths.
Also, TCM is absorbing the advantages of Western medicine. They
work together in China to protect people from disease and
improve public health. Even if traditional Chinese medicine is
not scientific, it makes great progress recently. Our
government takes some measures to develop TCM, for example, 130
TCM elements have been incorporated into the Representative
List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Do you remember artemisinin? It’s a gift from Traditional
Chinese Medicine to the world. Tu youyou said that Chinese
medicine and pharmacology are a great treasure-house. We should
explore them and raise them to a higher level. By this example,
we can learn the TCM is important for our life. Though some people doubt that TCM is unscientific, it always improving by
many scientists. And it becomes more and more accurate and
reliable.
Just like Professor Tu says that adopting, exploring,
developing and advancing these practices would allow us to
discover more novel medicines beneficial to the world
healthcare. Let’s take great efforts to improve traditional
Chinese medicine and push it forward the worldwide.
