This is Jamie from the student activities committee with an awesome announcement about our upcoming volleyball match against Oakwood High School. Get ready because this is going to be an epic battle on the court that you won't want to miss!First off, let me give you all the key details about the event:Date: Saturday, April 15thTime: 3pm - 5pmLocation: Our school gymnasiumSo mark your calendars and clear your schedules because this is going to be one for the books! Our boys and girls volleyball teams have been training hard all season and are ready to bring their A-game.For those who don't know, the volleyball rivalry between our school and Oakwood High has been intense for years. We've gone back and forth winning the annual match, with the score almost always coming down to the final few points in the fifth set.The tension, the drama, the spirits - it's insane! Last year, our teams unfortunately suffered a heartbreaking loss in a match that literally came down to the final point. The Oakwood players rushed the court and their fans went wild as our teams walked off dejected. It was brutal. But this year, we're determined to get our revenge and show Oakwood that our skills have only gotten better. Our teams have been putting in long hours practicing serves, spikes, digs, and blockers. The chemistry between our players is off the charts. We have some insanely talented athletes with court vision and reflexes like you wouldn't believe. Mark my words, we're going to make Oakwood regret ever stepping foot onto our home court. The stakes have never been higher, and the pressure is on. But that's what makes it so exciting! The atmosphere at these matches is always electric. You can feel the energy and tension pulsing through the gymnasium as the game goes on. Players are flying across the court, crowds are roaring after every point, and the whole place is just charged with an intensity that gives you chills.Look, I can keep hyping it up, but you all know what I'm talking about. Volleyball matches between our schools are themain event every year. It's the game that everyone, students and families alike, circles on their calendar months in advance. Alumni even come back to relive the rivalry and cheer on the alma mater. That's how big of a deal this is.So here's what I need from all of you... I need you to get pumped and get ready to be louder than Oakwood's fans! We need to pack the gymnasium and make it absolutely deafening in there when our teams take the court. Bring all your friends, paint your faces, make signs, rehearse chants - do whatever it takes to show our unwavering support and create an environment that inspires our players to victory. And for those not going just to watch and cheer, we need volunteers to help set up and run the event smoothly. We'll need score keepers, line judges, people to sell concessions and merchandise, staff to monitor entrances and exits, and cleanup crews after it's all over. Hosting an event like this takes a huge team effort, so please sign up if you can lend a hand in any way.Seriously guys, the more people we have involved and the crazier our fans can get, the better. We want to make this an experience our teams will never forget. We want to show them that their entire school community is behind them 100%. We want to create an atmosphere that Oakwood not only has to playagainst our talented teams, but also against a roaring home crowd that doesn't let up.Just picture it - the gymnasium is packed from front to back, all dressed in our school colors. The energy is crackling. Our fans are deafening as our boys' team storms out of the locker room and gets set to kick things off. Oakwood's players take the court, looking extremely intimidated by the raucous environment they've walked into. The referee blows the whistle, the first serve goes up, and the match begins! From that very first point, our teams feed off the energy and momentum from the crowd. They play with a focus, determination, and intensity that can't be matched. Every kill is celebrated with a roar, every dig is cheered feverishly, and our fans stay on their feet, screaming and clapping from start to finish. As the match reaches its climax in the fifth and final set, the score is fittingly tied and the championship point looms large. It's an epic back-and-forth battle at the net until one of our hitters absolutely demolishes the ball with a vicious spike that Oakwood can't return. Pandemonium ensues as our crowd explodes in cheers, our players dogpile on the court, and thechampionship celebration officially begins! That's the moment we're all envisioning and working towards! So there you have it, my friends. This is the biggest event of the year for our school, a chance to rally together and reclaim the volleyball throne over Oakwood High. Will you answer the call and help make this an unforgettable spectacle? Our teams need each and every one of us to bring energy, make noise, and show that our spirit is unmatched.I'll leave you with this - whether you come to play on the court or be part of the crowd, your role is crucial. Our volleyball players are walking warriors, gladiators preparing for an epic clash that will etch their names into the history books of this rivalry. They need you to be their strength, their motivation, their deafening source of adrenaline. So get hyped, get ready, and let's bring the championship back home where it belongs! Go Oakland Prep! 2024届山东省实验中学高三下学期高考模拟英语试题一、阅读理解According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), hundreds of marine (海洋的) species across the world come under endangered and critically endangered categories. Some of the endangered and recognizable marine species are named here.Kemp’s Ridley Sea TurtleThe Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle, also known as the Atlantic Ridley Sea Turtle, is endangered as the rarest and smallest sea turtle.Distributed throughout the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Atlantic seaboard, they gather off the coast in northeastern Mexico and come ashore in large groups to lay eggs every year. As marine reptiles (爬行动物), they are threatened by oil spills, lack of food and marine pollution.VaquitaAs a rare marine mammal, Vaquita is on the edge of extinction only a half-century after its first sighting.Extensive fishing in the Gulf of California has endangered this marine species, resulting in a gradual drop in population since the 1940s. But leaving reforestation to Mother Nature can take decades, particularly as disastrous wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity. And the time, cost and labour involved makes traditional methods of tree planting not as practical as they once were.Bryce Jones knows how hard it is to replant forests. For four months in 2013, he worked as a tree planter throughout Canada. “There’s no technology there,” he says. “The only way you can automate reforestation is through the air.” But it wasn’t until 2019 that he hit on the one that he thought had potential: use drones (无人机) to fire specially designed seed pods (荚) into the ground—at 10 times the normal rate and costing 20-percent less than traditional methods. He proposed the idea to his brother and Flash Forest was born. His first goal was to plant a billion trees by 2025.The team took out a loan, bought a drone and used 3D printers at Jones’s school to make casts of the pods. Now, only two and a half years later, the company has a group of drones with each able to carry several thousand pods per flight. Three operators work in a field, controlling five drones, whose flights take 15 to 20minutes. Flash Forest’s big draw is its seed pod, which contains everything seedlings (幼苗) need to promote survival. And its technology allows them to reach post-burn sites or remote areas that are difficult for traditional tree planting. There are challenges every day, Jones says, as they work to improve the engineering, hardware, software and seed-po d recipes. Then there are the challenges presented by the climate——this year, record temperatures, record wildfires and drought. “That was something that was totally out of our control,” he says.Unlike some traditional forms of reforestation, Flash Forest is focused on biodiversity. For Jones, the target of planting a billion trees by 2025 is just the beginning. “I have a dream that the company will plant on six continents——everywhere where our technology is needed,” he says.4.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 1?A.The benefits of reforestation.B.The power of Mother Nature.C.The way of putting out wildfires.D.The urgency to seek a planting way.5.What are the features of Jones’ technology?A.Efficient and cost-saving.B.Innovative and back-breaking.C.Pricey and ground-breaking.D.Challenging and time-consuming.6.What contributes to the particular appeal of Flash Forest?A.Its drone operators.B.The frequent flights.C.Its seed pod.D.The low cost of seedlings.7.What can we infer about Flash Forest from the last paragraph?A.It changed its focus in the past.B.It will achieve its final target in 2025.C.It might be available worldwide one day.D.It has replaced traditional forms of reforestation.Ariel Procaccia has thought a lot about how to cut a cake over the last 15 years. As the father of three children, he knows how hard it is to divide a birthday cake to everyone’s satisfaction. But it’s also because Procaccia’s work focuses on exploring the mathematical rules for dividing stuff up fairly. One way to do that is to think abstractly about dessert. For decades, researchers have been asking the seemingly simple question of how to cut a cake fairly. The answer reaches far beyond birthday parties. A mathematical problem at its heart, cake cutting connects strict reasoning to real-world issues of fairness, and so attracts not only mathematicians, but also social scientists, economists and more. “It’s a very elegant model in which you can distill what fairness really is, and reason about it,” Procaccia says. The simplest approach is called the “divider-chooser” method, where one person cuts the cake into two equal pieces in his view, and the other person picks first. Each receives a piece that they feel is as valuable as the other’s. But when personal preferences are taken into account, even the easiest rule becomes complicated. Suppose Alice and Bob are to divide a cake, and Alice knows Bob prefers chocolate, she may knowingly divide the cake unequally so the smaller piece contains more chocolate. Then Bob will choose according to his preference, and Alice will get the larger piece. Both of them are satisfied with what they get, but the meaning of fairness changes in this situation. The cake is a symbol for any divisible good. When cake-cutting principles are employed to settle disagreements, they are potentially helping the world find solutions. Procaccia has used fair division algorithms (算法) to model food distribution. Social scientist Haris Aziz is exploring situations ranging from how to divide up daily tasks to how to best schedule doctors’ shifts in hospitals.Even after decades of investigation, cake cutting isn’t like a simple jigsaw puzzle (拼图) with a well-definedsolution. Instead, over time, it has evolved into a kind of mathematical sandbox, a constructive playground that brings together abstract proofs and easy applications. The more researchers explore it, the more there is to explore. 8.What does the underlined word “distill” in paragraph 2 mean?A.Get the essence of.B.Find the opposite of.C.Keep the focus on.D.Reduce the impact on.9.What can we learn about fairness from the example given in paragraph 3?A.Its standard is stable.B.It prevents unequal division.C.Its concept is complex.D.It dominates personal preferences.10.What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning cake cutting?A.The application of its rules.B.The details of its process.C.The problems it produces.D.The harmony it symbolizes.11.What is the best title for the text?A.Who benefits most from fairness?B.How has fairness changed over time?C.What method works best in cake-cutting?D.Why are researchers so interested in cake-cutting?Amblyopia is the most common cause of vision loss in children. In all cases of amblyopia, there’s a stronger eye and a weaker eye, and it’s winner-take-all in the cortex (大脑皮层). The cortex learns to ignore the signal from the weaker eye. By ignoring the weaker eye, the brain doesn’t fuse (融合) images from both eyes. As a result, people with amblyopia can have trouble seeing in 3D.In an attempt to solve this problem, doctors start treating patients with amblyopia at a young age, while their brain pathways are still developing. The children, usually under 7 years old, are often told to wear an eye patch over their strong eye to force the brain to rely on the weaker. But whenever the eye patch is removed, the competition can start over. For lasting improvement, new treatments need to teach the brain to stop suppressing (抑制) key visual cues coming from the weaker eye, says neuroscientist Dennis Levi of the University of California. Now, several research teams are taking a new way that aims to get the brain to make better use of the information coming from both eyes, Several companies are working on treatments based on this new angle. One is called Luminopia.Luminopia’s therapy involves having children watch videos through a virtual reality headset. As the childrenwatch, the headset blocks out certain parts of the display for each eye, so the patients actually have to combine input from the two images to get the full video. The company conducted a trial showing that children with amblyopia begin to see better on eye chart assessments after three months of one-hour sessions done six days a week, But they have yet to measure improvements in long-term effectiveness. It is believed that if people with amblyopia don’t learn to fuse signals from both eyes from a young age, they never will. So some scientists think attempting to treat adults, whose brains have suppressed signals from their weak eye for decades, is a lost cause.12.Why does a person with amblyopia have trouble seeing in 3D?A.His brain is unable to receive images.B.His cortex overlooks signals from the weaker eye.C.His stronger eye can’t send signals to the brain.D.His weaker eye fails to receive signals.13.Which of the following best describes the effect of an eye patch?A.Ineffective.B.Temporary.C.Wonderful.D.Comprehensive.14.What is the working principle of Luminopia’s therapy?A.Activating the weak eye to get the full video.B.Forcing the brain to rely on the weaker eye.C.Improving the situations with eye chart assessments.D.Blocking out the images received from the stronger eye.15.What can we learn about Luminopia’s therapy from the last paragraph?A.It has an instant effect.B.Adults are is main targets.C.More trials need to be conducted.D.It has long-term effectiveness.Ask anyone how they’re feeling these days and chances are that they’ll reply with some version of “exhausted”. We’re tired of operating amid uncertainty. We’re tired of balancing childcare with work. 16 They direct our focus to the most readily available information to help us make decisions quickly without properly considering all the variables. The result is that we are wired to move toward things that make us feel good and away from things that make us feel uncomfortable. 17 They default (默认) to what feels “normal”. Those networks are so deep in ourthinking that when we’re traveling a new and challenging path, our wheels default back to the worn-in grooves (凹槽). So, how do we do hard things when our brains are constantly telling us to avoid effort?18 A 2016 study found that when people are upset, they’re less likely to try to do hard things. When they’re feeling upbeat, however, they’re more likely to take on the hard-but-essential tasks that ultimately make life better. One way we can get ourselves in the right mindset is to do what’s called “reappraisal”, in which we create a shift in our brains of how we perceive a task. Moreover, we must give our brains the right amount of autonomy. When we have a choice, our brains often want to programme something easy. 19 Put it into a work context: Do I want to experiment with a new project management tool that might make things easier for my team next week, or do I want to stick with the same sheet that a former employee established that none of us feel great about anyway?20 But by understanding what’s going on in your brain, you can work toward accomplishing hard things and manage your fears better.A.Tackle them when we’re in a good mood.B.Doing things like hard work can seem abnormal.C.Our brains label effort as bad because it’s hard work.D.We should be creative and open-minded when doing tasks.E.This is called mindset fault, the tendency to do right things.F.When we feel like this, our brains want to save mental energy.G.But we can reduce the response by challenging ourselves to be innovative.二、完形填空I’d been exploring the 40-hectare woods around our cottage my whole life and I knew the way well. On the EDGE of 3G On the EDGE of 3G By Patrick MorganSilicon Laboratories Inc.The requirement for high-speed data services via next generation networks is inevitable. GSM is widely deployed around the world representing more than 70 percent of today's digital wireless market with more than 850 million end users in 195 countries according to the GSM Association. Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is rapidly being deployed as an upgrade to the existing GSM/GPRS network across North America, Europe and Asia. Camera phones, messaging and on-line audio and video are just some of the applications that drive the demand for data over the cell phone network. Peak theoretical data rates with EDGE are up to three times faster than with GPRS.Many industry researchers believe that EDGE will begin to rapidly displace GSM and GPRS over the next two years, while 3G standards, Wideband CDMA and UMTS will grow substantially in 2006 (see Figure 1). In North America, GSM operators are implementing EDGE as a cost-effective means of providing high-speed data comparable to competing CDMA2000 services. In Europe and Asia, some operators have already paid large spectrum license fees for WCDMA and are under active contracts with the governments to roll out WCDMA services. These operators may implement EDGE as a complementary service to WCDMA allowing data services outside the pockets of WCDMA coverage. Other operators who avoided the WCDMA licensing fees may look to EDGE as a cost-effective service to provide high-speed data in existing GSM spectrum. Either way, EDGE is expected to be deployed in the majority of handsets with a steep production ramp starting in 2005.2001200220032004200520062007H a n d s e t U n i t S h i p m e n t s (M )Source: Deutsche Bank, Jan 2004Figure 1: Projected Growth of the Cellular NetworksThe Technology Lights the PathAs EDGE technology becomes mainstream, it is expected that continued integration efforts will drive the total handset radio bill-of-materials (BOM) to be equivalent with GSM/GPRS and provide a pathway to very highly integrated 3G radios. Because EDGE is a newer technology, challenging requirements are introduced to the design of the EDGE handset. In addition, understanding the technological requirements for EDGE provides a building block for designing products for the 3G network. Also vying for high-speed data traffic is WCDMA. Both EDGE and WCDMA must also be compatible with existing legacy GSM/GPRS networks and handsets. However, compared to EDGE, which employs the same time division multiple access (TDMA) structure and channel spacing as GSM, WCDMA employs a code-division multiple access (CDMA) structure with much wider channels that require a much more substantial upgrade investment. Since 3G is not clearly defined, handset designers must decide what modes they plan to support, whether that be purely WCDMA or WCDMA with EDGE as a fallback. When examining the technology behind next generation handsets, there are many pressures on the handset component designers driving the innovation. Handset manufacturers are demanding highly integrated products that reduce the BOM cost while allowing increased functionality in the handset. With EDGE and 3G on the horizon, it is becoming increasingly important that handset manufacturers are provided clear technology roadmaps for products such as RF transceivers that are openly compatible with other components in the handset allowing designers more freedom when choosing best-in-class components. To permit high-speed data for EDGE, a new modulation called 8-PSK must be supported in addition to the existing GMSK modulation used for GSM/GPRS. However, to ensure backwards compatibility, EDGE radios must support the capability for 8-PSK modulation with no compromise to GSM/GPRS performance.Various EDGE radio architectures have been proposed to support both GMSK and 8-PSK modulation. Radios based on polar loop or polar modulation promise to provide high-power added efficiency (PAE) at the expense of additional calibration and complexity required to support the power control feedback loop. Alternative radios support EDGE by adding a linear transmitter for 8-PSK modulation to an existing GSM/GPRS transceiver. This approach has the benefit of supporting 8-PSK modulation while preserving excellent GSM/GPRS performance.Compared to polar loop and polar modulation, the linear transmitter architecture is currently in production for GSM/EDGE handsets and is also used for CDMA and W-CDMA handsets. Unlike polar, which requires a special or customized PA, designers may select PAs from any one of a number of vendors when using a linear transmitter. The main drawback to this approach is the possible need for a low-band transmit filter to remove additional noise created by the modulator/VGA, which increases the radio bill-of-materials.Integration is a key factor to components in next generation handsets, and CMOS is providing a significant benefit in this arena. In the radio portion of the handset, there are a few factors that greatly improve the integration and create a pathway for next generation designs. For example, implementing a digitally-controlled crystal oscillator (DCXO) onto the transceiver enables the use of a standard 26 MHz crystal to provide the transceiver reference clock, thereby reducing the handset BOM. This is beneficial to GSM/GPRS and EDGE because these require a 13 MHz reference clock, but it is also beneficial to WCDMA because it requires a 19.2 MHz reference clock. Additional integrated functionality such as increased analog and mixed-signal capabilities, analog-to-digital converters and digital filters is enabled by the implementation of CMOS.Historically chipsets for next generation handsets were available before the networks were ready, and the same will most likely be true of 3G. But, as 3G becomes a reality, customers will require that component makers provide GSM/GPRS and EDGE solutions that offer an upgrade path to next generation networks.。
