There would be no softball game this afternoon. Lori let out a deep sigh."What's wrong, honey?" asked Nana."It's this rain, Nana." Lori looked sadly at her grandmother. "My softball game will be cancelled, and there's nothing to do today!""Nonsense," Nana genuinely looked surprised. "How can you say there's nothing to do?"Lori looked at the pile of fabric sitting on Nana's lap. "Well, what are you doing?""I'm working on this quilt! Would you like to help?""Quilting? I don't know. That doesn't sound very exciting." Lori reluctantly sat on the floor beside her grandmother. The fabric on Nana's lap was colorful and pretty, but quilting always looked so boring—not fun and exciting like softball."The first thing you need to think about is the pattern," Nana began. "You need to know the design before you start.""So what's your design?" Lori asked."It's a simple pattern of shapes, but I'm using beautiful fabric and I think it's coming together nicely. Would you like to try?"Lori looked doubtful. "Well," she began, "I'll try . . ."Nana handed the quilt to Lori, and she explained how Lori should sew the small fabric square into the larger design. Even though Lori thought the fabric was pretty, she could only think about her cancelled softball game and quickly began to daydream.Lori snapped out of her daydream when she heard Nana shout, "Stop, honey! What are you doing?""I'm sorry, Nana," Lori said, embarrassed. "I wasn't concentrating.""I can certainly see that," Nana said. "Lori, when you do something—anything—you need to pay attention.""I know. I guess I don't think quilting is very interesting."Nana walked to the closet and pulled a dusty box from the top shelf. From inside the box, Nana pulled out a quilt. It looked old and well used. Lori unfolded the quilt and saw a large star patched together with faded red and blue triangles."What is it, Nana?""It's the North Star. This quilt was made by my grandmother's mother.""We learned about the North Star in science class, but why did your great-grandmother put it on a quilt?" Lori was paying attention now."Well, I wasn't there, so I can't guarantee this is entirely true, but this is the story my mother told me. My great-grandmother was born in the South before the Civil War, and she was a slave. I'm sure you've learned about the Underground Railroad in school, right?"Lori nodded. "It was the route taken by runaway slaves when they tried to escape to the North. Manypeople were involved and risked their lives to provide slaves with a place to sleep or hide.""That's right. The story goes that my great-grandmother decided to run away and find her freedom. She quickly learned the secret signs of the Underground Railroad. One of those signs was a quilt with a NorthStar design."Lori was hanging on Nana's every word. She was fascinated. "What did the quilts mean?""Think about it. When do you see the North Star?""Of course! At night! The quilts told the slaves to travel north at nighttime, when it was safer.""I'm impressed! After my great-grandmother found her freedom, she made this quilt to remember the journey and the risks so many people took to help her. It has been passed down from mother to daughterever since. I gave it to your mother when she got married, and someday she'll give it to you."Lori stood up and gave Nana a big hug. "I'm sorry I didn't pay attention before. Can I try sewing thesquare on your new quilt again?"41. Which of the following would make the best title for this story?A. North Star SecretsB. Rainy Day ActivitiesC. Learning to QuiltD. Inadequate ventilation(通风)can increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute(稀释)emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home. High temperature and humidity(温度)levels can also increase concentrations of some pollutants.Pollutant SourcesThere are many sources at indoor air pollution in any home. These include burning sources such as oil, gas, kerosene, coal, wood, and tobacco products; building materials and furnishings as diverse as deteriorated asbestos(石棉)---containing insulation, wet or damp carpet, and cabinetry or furniture made of certain pressed wood products; products for household cleaning and maintenance, personal care, or hobbies; central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices; and outdoor sources such as radon (氡),pesticides (杀虫剂),and outdoor air pollution. The relative importance of any single source depends on how much of a given pollutant it emits and how hazardous those emissions are. In some cases, factors such as how old the source is and whether it is properly maintained are significant. For example, an improperly adjusted gas stove can emit significantly more carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)than one that is properly adjusted. Some sources, such as building materials, furnishings, and household products like air fresheners, release pollutants more or less continuously. Other sources, related to activities carried in the home, release pollutants from time to time. These include smoking, the use of malfunctioning stoves, furnaces, or space heaters, the use of solvents(溶剂)in cleaning and hobby activities, the use of paint strippers in decorating activities, and the use of clearing products and pesticides in house-keeping. High pollutant concentrations can remain in the air for long periods after some of these activities.Amount of VentilationIf too little outdoor air enters a home, pollutants can accumulate to levels that can cause health and comfort problems. Unless they are built with special mechanical means of ventilation, homes that are designed and constructed to minimize the amount of outdoor air that can "leak" into and out of the home may have higher pollutant levels than other homes. However, because some weather conditions can drastically reduce the amount of outdoor air that enters a home, pollutants can build up even in homes that are normally consider ed “leaky”.How Does Outdoor Air Enter a House?Outdoor air enters and leaves a house by infiltration(渗透), natural ventilation, and mechanical ventilation. In a process known as infiltration, outdoor air flows into the house through openings, joints, and cracks in walls, floors, and ceilings, and around windows and doors. In natural ventilation, air moves through opened windows, and doors. Air movement associated with infiltration and natural ventilation is caused by air temperature differences between indoors and outdoors and by wind. Finally, there are a number of mechanical ventilation devices, from outdoor-vented fans that intermittently remove air from a single room, such asbathrooms and kitchen, to air handling systems that use fans and pipe work to continuously remove indoor air and distribute filtered and conditioned outdoor air to strategic points throughout the house. The rate at which outdoor air replaces indoor air is described as the air exchange rate. When there is little infiltration, natural ventilation, or mechanical ventilation, the air exchange rate is low and pollutant levels can increase.Indoor Air Pollution and HealthHealth effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, possibly, years later.1) Immediate effectsImmediate effects may show up after a single exposure or repeated exposures. These include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Such immediate effects are usually short-term and treatable. Sometimes the treatment is simply eliminating the person's exposure to the source of the pollution, if it can be identified. Symptoms of some diseases, including asthma(哮喘), hypersensitivity pneumonitis(肺炎), and humidifier fever, may also show up soon after exposure to some indoor air pollutants. The likelihood of immediate reactions to indoor air pollutants depends on several factors. Age and preexisting medical conditions are two important influences. In other cases, whether a person reacts to a pollutant depends on individual sensitivity, which varies tremendously from person to person. Some people can become sensitized to biological pollutants after repeated exposures, and it appears that some people can become sensitized to chemical pollutants as well. Certain immediate effects are similar to those from colds or other virus diseases, so it is often difficult to determine if the symptoms are a result of exposure to indoor air pollution. For this reason, it is important to pay attention to the time and place symptoms occur. If the symptoms fade or go away when a person is away from home, for example, an effort should be made to identify indoor air sources that may be possible causes. Some effects may be made worse by an inadequate supply of outdoor air or from the everyday heating, cooling, or humidity conditions in the home.2) Long-term effectsOther health effects may show up either years after exposure has occurred or only after long or repeated periods of exposure. These effects, which include someRespiratory (呼吸的)diseases, heart disease, and cancer, can be severely harmful or fatal. It is prudent(谨慎的)to try to improve the indoor air quality in your home even if symptoms are not noticeable. While pollutants commonly found in indoor air are responsible for many harmful effects, there is considerable uncertainty about what concentrations or periods of exposure are necessary to produce specific health problem. People also react very differently to exposure to indoor air pollutants. Further research is needed to better understand which health effects occur after exposure to the average pollutant concentrations found in homes and which occurs from the higher concentrations that occur for short periods of time.1. This passage is about how outdoor air enters a house.2. The main causes of indoor air quality problems in homes is as follows.inadequate ventilation, high temperature, and humidity levels.3. The main sources of indoor air pollution are building materials and furnishingsproducts for household cleaning.4. Outdoor air can go into and out of a house in three ways: infiltration, natural ventilation, and mechanical ventilation.5. The effects of indoor air pollution are always long term, not needing immediatetreatment.6. According to the passage, we have found out effective ways to fight against indoor air pollution.7. In the future, experts should take effective measures to carry out researches on both the immediate effects and the long-term effects of indoor air pollution.8 .Burning sources include __________________.9. Reading Comprehension ( Reading in Depth ) (25minutes) Section A:Directions:In this section, there is a short passage with 5 questions or incomplete blanks. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Write your answers in the spaces provided on Answer sheet 2.Questions 47 to 51 are based on the following passage.I usually kick off with the following question:After the gold medal winner, who is happier at the Olympics? The silver medal winner. The bronze medal winner. Then I draw out responses from the audience. Some pick the silver medal winner. Some pick the bronze. Occasionally someone chooses the coach or even the audience. One par ticipant recently shouted out, “The sponsors!”The correct answer is that the bronze medal winner tends to be happier than the silver medal winner, according to research conducted in 1995. When I ask the audience why they think this might be, they always understand the answer. The silver medal winner can taste the gold she missed. She is thinking, “No, no, no. I missed.” Meanwhile, the bronze medal winner is clinging for dear life to his medal as if it was the edge of a cliff overlooking the abyss(深渊)of nobody hood. He is thinking, “Oh thank God I made it. I almost missed out on a medal, but at least I'm an Olympic medali st.”The point I make with the question up front is that we can measure our daily happiness, and to some degree control it, by the yardsticks we use as measurements. That's the secret of happiness. As in the Olympics, there are gold, silver and bronze medals in daily life. Gold is absolute success, like when you land(签订)the big contract that will keep your company afloat for several years to come. Or when you score a prom(舞会)date with the homecoming queen. Or when your child comeshome with straight As on his report card. The silver medal is nothing to turn up your nose at, though. It is still success: another contract that will keep business humming happily along; a date with another lovely lady; or a full set of fairly good marks on your child's report card. Bronze medals come in every situation, as well. It may not be much, but it is a contract. At least you have a date. And your child passed every subject. Each is an example of success, too.In our dog-eat-dog world, we are taught to be perfectionists, to give 110 percent, to strive to be number one. If you are a perfectionist, second place may not be good enough for you. You may not be satisfied unless you land the big contract, the perfect date, or straight As. However, if you are not a god, you probably will have to be satisfied with less than perfection. Or, you can choose to be dissatisfied. It remains your choice.I prefer to be satisfied with all my imperfections and call them successes rather than feel dissatisfied with them. That does not mean giving up, by the way. I do aim for top spot. I do give 110 percent. But I choose to accept my limitations rather than be unhappy about them.47. According to the research conducted in 1995, after the gold medal winner, whois happier at the Olympics?48. People think that the bronze medal winner tends to be happier than the silvermedal winner because the bronze medal winner_________________________.49. What is the secret of the happiness?50. What is the author’s attitude towards his imperfections?________________________________________________________________ 51. From the beginning of the passage, we can infer that the writing style of thispassage maybe _____________________________.Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2with a single line through the center.. Passage OneQuestions 52 to 56 are based on the following passageThe fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: “store in the refrigerator”.In my fridgeless fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on food deliveries have ceased, fresh vegetables are almost not available in the country. The invention of the fridge, contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed—natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling…What refrigeration did promote was marketing—marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.Consequently, most of the world's fridges are to be found, not in the tropics (热带地区)where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are almost unnecessary according to the climate. Every winter, millions of fridges hum(嗡嗡响)away continuously, and at vast expense busily maintaining an artificially-cooled space inside an artificially heated house—while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge. The fridge’s effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at lest you’ll get rid of that terrible hum.52. What’s the main idea of the passage?A) The fridge’s effect on the environment.B) The fridge is not necessary.C) The fridge is a necessity.D) The invention of fridge and marketing.53. According to the author, nothing was wasted before the invention of fridgesbecause______.A) people would not buy more food than was necessaryB) food was delivered to people two or three times a weekC) food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easilyD) people had effective ways to preserve food54. Those who benefited most from fridges according to the author are ___.A) inventors B) consumersC) businessmen D) traveling salesmen55. According to the passage ,what’s the natural ways to preserve the food except_________.A) drying B) smokingC) salting D) packaging56. The author’s overall attitude toward fridges can be described as______.A) positive B) critical C) negative D) subjectivePassage TwoQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passageSport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes (运动员). Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable. The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents' and coaches' criticisms to heart and find a flaw(缺陷)in themselves.Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today's youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. 正确答案:Cooperation and Competition As we proceed through life, we are faced with many types of situations. Each situation requires us to behave in different ways. We may be faced with a large project which, in order to be accomplished efficiently, demands the cooperation of each person. In this instance, we must be flexible, supportive, and be willing to compromise. Each person is only a small part of a much larger machine. Being competitive also plays a role in life. The desire for success inspires us to work harder. If there was no competition, a sports meeting will never be exciting and successful; we could never have champions. To succeed in life, we must learn to be both cooperative and competitive. The most important thing to learn in life is to know when to be cooperative and when to be competitive. 涉及知识点:综合模拟Part V Error Correction (15 minutes)Directions: This part consists of a short passage.
