Louis Braille was born in the nineteenth century. When he was three years old, an accident at his father’s workshop left him blind. As a young boy, Louis was hard-working and clever. His teachers suggested that he should go to the National Institute for Blind Youths. ①At that time, this was the only school for the blind in France. At the institute, Louis was eager to learn to read and write. To his great disappointment, the few books he found at the institute used raised (凸起的) letters. This method of reading was difficult for the blind, because they had to feel slowly each letter. ②到他们摸到句子末尾时,他们已经忘记开头是关于什么了。
Louis wanted to develop an easier reading system for the blind. His idea of such a system came from Charles Barbier, a French army officer. Barbier had invented a system called “Night Writing”, which was made up of dots and dashes. Soldiers used this system to communicate with one another during the night. Louis adapted (改编) this system for his own use. He produced a simpler system based on dots. For example, “A” is represented by a single dot. Many blind students found this system much easier to use. This came to be known as the “Braille” system. Today, millions of blind people are able to read, thanks to the work of a young blind man.任务一:将文中划线的句子①翻译成汉语。

People use critical thinking in every area of life to solve problems and evaluate claims(评估主张).Like every other skill, critical thinking takes practice. When a problem comes our way, we need to think critically to decide how to solve it. When we see an advertisement, for example, we should stop and think. Advertisements are made to make people feel certain that they are true, and then people can buy the products. But is what the advertisement says true? Is it making a claim? Or does it only interest us? Critical thinking is important and stops us from making poor choices. In fact, we are using it if we ask questions naturally about what we see.Practice makes perfect. While you are growing in critical thinking, you’ll become a wiser and more thoughtful person. There are many ways of doing practice. Here are a few.★Read about a topic people disagree on. What many people don't know is that junk has become a problem in outer space too.According to BBC News, there are more than 22, 000 pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes (望远镜). There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds, so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spaceship, it could damage the vehicle (交通工具).To make things worse, when two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a U. S. satellite hit an old Russian rocket in 2009, it broke into more than 2,000 pieces, increasing the amount of space junk.To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.Many scientists are also suggesting different ways to clean up space junk. In England scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed."The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers," says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space researcher."The time to act is now. 专题:任务型阅读一、填空At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted.Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars.First of all, transport should be much better.___________________________.However, by 2100, spaceship can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars! Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live.Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now. There is a problem for us to live on Mars.Mars suck(吸力) us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways.People will have more space.Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies. There will probably be no school on Mars.Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today.Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill.The spaceship will travel fast, so the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.1.根据短文内容完成句子填空(每空限填一个单词)。

Most children learn to read and write at an early age and use these skills to get and share information in books, magazines, letters, and messages. Businesses depend on written words to municate and to sell products. Governments depend on written documents as the basis for their laws. We would be lost without writing. The earliest people had no system of writing. Writing developed over thousands of years in different cultures around the world, like ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete, China, and so on.Long before, drawings were used as a form of munication. Rock drawings are found in many places. One rock drawing in the mountainous part of New Mexico shows a mountain goat standing up and a man riding a horse upside down. Archaeologists(考古学家) believe that the drawing was a warning to riders that the road was too dangerous to walk.Modern forms of writing began when people learned to use symbols, such as letters and words to stand for ideas. At first, they used pictures that stood for words. For example, a picture might show a hunter, the weapons(武器) the hunter used, and a pair of deer the hunter killed. Then, Sumerians in Mesopotamia learned to use the same symbols to stand for different words. Ancient Egyptians used symbols known as hieroglyphs(象形字). It was similar to the writing of the Sumerians.Even greater advances were made in China about 3,500 years ago. The Chinese used thousands of signs and they could write proper names and new words. However, this was a knotty system. To make writing easier, things had to be made in easy way. The answer was the development of alphabets. The Phoenicians are often credited with developing one of the first useful alphabets. The Phoenician alphabet used about 20 or 30 signs. They were well on their way to at least one type of modern writing because the modern English alphabet uses 26 letters.1.What's the purpose of Paragraph 1? Do you have a birthday party or get many best wishes from your friends or family? People celebrate birthdays almost in the same way—birthday cakes, birthday candles, birthday songs are very often seen. However, there are also some special ways to celebrate birthdays. In Nigeria (a country in Africa), the 1st, 5th, 10th, and 15th birthdays are very important to them. On these birthdays, they often have very big parties with more than 100 guests. They often eat a roasted cow or goat. There is also a very special food called “Joll of Rice”. It's the rice with tomatoes, red pepper, onions and sweet potatoes. In Korea, the most important birthday is “paegil”. It's on the 100th day after a child's birth. The family and friends get together to have a big dinner with rice cakes, wine and other delicious food like red and black bean cakes. It's said if 100 people share with the rice cakes, the child will have a long life. So parents often send the rice cakes to as many people as possible to share happiness. Parents also put the red and black bean cakes in the house because they believe the bean cakes can lead to good luck and happiness. In China, the 1st birthday is very important to a baby. The parents often put the baby in the center of a group of things, such as coins, a doll, a book, etc. And wait to see which thing the baby picks up. If the baby picks up a coin, he or she may be rich. If the baby chooses the book, he or she may bee a teacher. If the baby reaches for the doll, he or she may have many children. The sixth birthday is also a special birthday for the Chinese child. Parents often cook a bowl of very long noodles to wish the birthday child a long life. All of these ways to celebrate birthdays may be different, but the wishes of good luck and happiness are the same.5.Which of the following is linked(有联系) to a long life? The festivalspread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted. Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact, Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of “ Taste Liquid(液体的 )Medicine for Mother ” tells us the filial virtue( 美德 )of Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mother ’ s love is a repeated subject in Chinese ancient poems, like Song of the Parting Son by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion. On special days, people often use roses or forget -me-nots to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has itsown for mothers — the tiger lily.Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children. You may find it difficult to make the plan now. Don ’t worry. All you need is just a rough( 大略的)one. Once you enter the senior high school, you ’ ll get a chance to make it better with the help of your teachers. And your personal growth plan may change with your age, your interests and the social development. So take your time and I believe you will grow into an excellent young man.Best wishes!精选文档欢迎下载 4Yours,Li Fang ( )1. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. That means it -working day in ’thes wholeanon of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday. The exact origin (发源 )of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas box was placed by a priest ( 神父 )on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed and kept on board until the ship came home safely.
