There are currently 791 pupils on the school roll(名单). The school has a long and distinguished history, and it is also one of the oldest charities in the country, providing scholarships to pupils and organizing a Charity of the Term. The curriculum(课程) at King's is based on strong academic roots. People living in the US Midwest might find a fact hard to believe, though. The scientists suggest that the change in the Midwest climate may have happened because of farming. The first study was led by David Changnon, a climatologist(气候学家) at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.Changnon and his team studied temperature records from the sites in the Midwest. They found that since 1970, the average temperature in the region during July and August has gone down—by up to one degree Fahrenheit(华氏度)—from what it was during the years between 1930 and 1969. Their investigation also showed that the average rainfall in those states during those two months has increased. Between 1970 and 2009, about 0.33 inch more rain fell than between 1930 and 1969.These_changes may be connected by humidity(湿度), Changnon says. Humidityis the measure of how much moisture is in the air. Humid air, which contains a lot of moisture, takes longer to heat up than dry air, Changnon notes. And humid air often releases its moisture through rainfall. So where did the extra moisture in the air come from?Changnon points to farms in the region. As plants grow, they pull moisture from the ground and release it into the air. And among plants, soybeans (大豆) and corn pla nts release a lot of moisture. Midwestern farms now plant more soybeans and corn than in the past, with 97 percent of farmland today planted with these two crops. In the 1930s, corn and soybeans covered only about 57 percent, Changnon says. He also notes that the plants are planted closer together now than they used to be, so there are more plants per acre than in the past. The second study, like Changnon's, also found an increase in rainfall in the same area. But it points to another possible source for the increased moisture. Alan Robock at Rutgers University was part of the team that produced the second study and presented the group's findings. The team found that irrigation practices in the Great Plains have changed over the years. The researchers studied a vast area in the region. They found that in 1930, farmers in that region irrigated only about 1.8 million acres of farmland. In 1980, however, farmers irrigated nearly 15 million acres. Plants use the water and then release it into the air. These results by Changnon and Robock and their colleagues are the first step toward understanding a change in the weather.20.What does the underlined term “These changes” refer to?A.Lower temperatures and more rainfall.B.Higher temperatures and higher humidity.C.Making a record both in the past and now.D.The tw o periods of the 40ye ar investigation.21.Which of the following could be the possible sources for the increased moisture in the US Midwest?A.Scientists' research and farmers' attention.B.Less farmland and more plants.C.More plants and irrigation practices.D.Natural reservoirs and underground rivers.22.The studies show that in America's Midwest,________.A.the average temperature is getting higher and higherB.more and more farmland has been desertedC.the amount of rain is closely related to the temperatureD.summers are now cooler and wetter than they were in years past23.According to the passage, irrigating more and more plants means ________.A.making more space for farms and buildingsB.making more and more water into the air, and thus causing more rainC.more farms depending on watersaving systemsD.using plants to change the climateⅢ.短文填词There are many inspiring stories about the Olympic Games. But we knew he loved us…He just had his own way of showing it.When I was a teen, we were seasonal campers at a family campground almost an hour outside the city where we lived. Each family had their own campsite with water and electric, and you basically parked your camper there from May through October. Most “seasonals” visited them every weekend during those months, with the occasional weeklong stay. There were plenty of other kids who camped seasonally each weekend, and they came to be some of my closest friends. Of course, many of them were boys.We kids paired up with our little boyfriends or girlfriends, and we'd hold hands as we walked around the campground. We'd play pingpong, have some snacks, and sing songs. Most weekends were pretty similar, but the couples would change. You'd see soandso with a different soandso than they were with the weekend before. You know how it is when you're a teen—a threeweek relationship is a really long time. So, needless to say, my teen years were spent with quite a few different boys. But every single one of them had something in common…They'd all received the Evil Eye.The Evil Eye was a magical sort of thing. One simple look from my dad, and the boy immediately knew not to mess_with me.It was as if he could send his warnings through invisible laser(激光) beams that shot directly from his eyes to the boys' brains.“You will not put your hands on my daughter…You will not kiss my daughter…You will not even whisper sweet things into my daughter's ear.”I remember one night in particular walking with a boy around the campground after dark. We came from one direction, and my dad from the other. The boy and my dad locked eyes for a brief second, then the boy dropped my hand like a hot potato and turned away, giving me a quick “See you later.”Yes, that's the Evil Eye: best way ever to keep wandering teen boys' hands away from your daughter.11.The Evil Eye in the passage implies that ________.A.Dad gets angry easilyB.Dad's eyes are evilC.Dad's eyes are uglylookingD.Dad's eyes are protective to his daughter12.The underlined words “mess with” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean“________”.A.cause trouble for B.make untidyC.get married to D.talk to13.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.As teenagers, we went camping every weekend.B.We made lots of friends during the seasonal camping.C.We had regular boyfriends or girlfriends and enjoyed ourselves.D.The boy dropped my hand and turned away because he loved the Evil Eye.14.It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.A.is a teenage girl who loves her fatherB.is a teenage boy who hates his fatherC.is now an adult who has come to understand her father's loveD.used to be a naughty boy who changed girlfriends now and thenBIf women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame.Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores.Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it,only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn.Women who can not afford to throw away clothing in this way waste hours of their time altering(改变) the dresses they have.Skirts are lengthened or shortened; necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society.Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort,as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day,or delicately picking her way through deep snow in highheeled shoes. When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious.Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability?Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers.Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.15.Designers and big stores always make money ________.A.by constantly changing the fashions in women's clothingB.by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industryC.because they are able to predict new fashions for the coming seasonD.because they attach great importance to the quality of women's clothing 16.To the writer, that women alter their old fashioned dresses is seen as________.A.a waste of moneyB.an expression of tasteC.a waste of timeD.an expression of creativity17.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.The fashion industry makes an important contribution to society.B.The constant changes in women's clothing reflect their strength of characters.C.Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed by women.D.New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of women.18.By saying “the conclusions to be drawn are obvious”,the writer means that ________.A.women are better able to put up with discomfortB.men are more reasonable in the matter of fashionC.men are also exploited greatly by fashion designersD.women's inconstancy in their choices of clothing is often laughed atⅢ.完成句子19.I think in English study it is your attitude, not your teachers ____________ the key role. Humidity is the measure of how much moisture is in the air. And among plants, soybeans (大豆) and corn plants release a lot of moisture. These results by Changnon and Robock and their colleagues are the first step toward understanding a change in the weather.15.What does the underlined term “These changes”refer to?A.Lower temperatures and more rainfall.B.Higher temperatures and higher humidity.C.Making a record both in the past and now.D.The two periods of the 40-year investigation.16.Which of the following could be the possible sources for the increased moisture in the US Midwest?A.Scientists' research and farmers' attention.B.Less farmland and more plants.C.More plants and irrigation practices.D.Natural reservoirs and underground rivers.17.The studies show that in America's Midwest,________.A.the average temperature is getting higher and higherB.more and more farmland has been desertedC.the amount of rain is closely related to the temperatureD.summers are now cooler and wetter than they were in years past18.According to the passage, irrigating more and more plants means ________.A.making more space for farms and buildingsB.making more and more water into the air, and thus causing more rainC.more farms depending on watersaving systemsD.using plants to change the climateⅢ.完成句子19.An order came that all the vehicles having seven or fewer seats __________________________________________ on the highway during the eight-day holiday. Unit 2 The Olympic Games课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解(2019·厦门模拟)Did you know that the color of uniforms can influence the performance of an athlete? It may sound strange, but a study suggests this might be true. Two British scientists studied the results of four sports in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where the athletes had been given either a red or a blue uniform. They discovered that when there was a big difference in the score, color had no influence on the result. But if it was a close match, the athlete in a red uniform was more likely to win. Then they looked at the uniforms of the soccer teams at the Euro 2004 tournament.Again, teams wearing red won more games. The two scientists got their idea from earlier studies of wild animals. It had been discovered that when a male show red on its body,it sends a signal of its power and strength. For example,in many kinds of monkey, the more the male shows off its red scars, the more females it can attract.Based on this fact, the British scientists thought that the idea might work for humans, too.According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red uniform,he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him.And that_kind_of_feeling may have a bad influence on the player's performance in the actual game.Although the idea is interesting, most people don't accept that color signals in the animals world can really be useful to humans in sports. They think that it is unreasonable to develop an idea based on such a small number of examples.Much more research has to be done to prove the influence of uniform colors on the performance of athletes.【文章大意】本文属于科普类文章。

Sian Beilock says, “They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about them as their cognitive(认知的)horsepower that they could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.” Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of 20 anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort. Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12 percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average offive percent. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+,compared to a B-for those who did not.who'd done the writing intervention(排解), all of a sudden therewas no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these testing situations. But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance. 11.The purpose of the passage is ________. It is a planet on which the continents are dwarfed(相形见绌)by the oceans surrounding them and the vastness of the marine area.r planet. The oceans provide necessary sources of protein, energy, minerals and other products of use the world over and the rolling of the sea across the planet creates over half our oxygen, drives weather systems and natural flows of energy and nutrients around the world, transports water masses many times greater than all the rivers on land combined and keeps the Earth habitable. Without the global ocean there would be no life on Earth. It is seriously worrying, then, that we are damaging the oceans on a scale that is unimaginable to most people. We now know that human activity can have serious influences on the vital forces governing our planet. We have fundamentally changed our global climate and are just beginning to understand the consequences of that. As yet largely unseen, but just as serious, are the influences we are having on the oceans. A healthy ocean has diverse ecosystems and strong and healthy habitats. The actual state of our oceans is a far cry from this natural level.ty of human pressures are being exerted both directly and indirectly on ocean ecosystems the world over. The young Lin spent much of his youth playing basketball for fun. In high school, Lin dreamed of playing in the NBA. When he applied for college, he was not offered a single sports scholarship. An attraction of sport programs for the major U. S. media companies is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoonshe slowest time periods of the week for generaBl television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming. Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance. Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings (收视率) are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computers, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computers. With such viewers, these programs don't need high ratings to stay on the air. 16. This is particularly true of the MTV generation—consumers between the age of 18 and 34. It's a golden group. They have a lot of money to spend, but they don't trust ads.So advertising agencies hire young actors to “perform” in bars and other places where young adults go. It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond's wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.Yes, that's parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy(理念)behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, “I love parko ur because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.”Another philosophy we've learnt from parkour is freedom. Unlike many pop singers, especially those who do not write their own material,Swift has the power of turning her ideas into lyrics that will set people thinking.“Hidden beneath Taylor Swift’s notagirl,not-yet-a-woman sweetness is a very skillful songwriting technique,” wrote Leah Greenblatt in an American magazine.Songwriting,as Swift explains,is to cope with issues.“I tend to write about things that really impact me most.” There certainly seems to be something true and honest running through every one of the 14 songs on her album,Speak No w,about “th e lessons and confusion and heartbreak and all the different things that go along with being 18,19 and 20.”“For the audience too young to have experienced real passion or heartbreak,Swift’s songs are like a potential road map, promising things will work out OK,” commented Dorian ynskey in a British newspaper. Now Swift is getting ready to go further and has so far written about 10 songs for her 2012 album, which is about feelings of growing up and becoming an adult.“They’re sad,if I’m being honest.”“They’re about my heartbreaks and my moving on.But more importantly, they are about achieving contentment. You’re not always going to be perfectly happy as you grow up.”1.What does the writer mean by saying “Werde’s words do not come from nowhere”?A.Swift stands out as a singer and songwriter.B.Only Swift writes her own songs.C.Swift begins to take interest in singing.D.Swift decides to deal with problems in her new album.2.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A.Swift has the ability to write songs with deeper meanings.B.Swift is both enthusiastic and skillful now.C.Swift became a multi-award winner when she began to sing on the stage.D.Swift’s album Speak No w has 14 songs.3.Taylor Swift’s 2012 album mainly records________.A.dream and reality B.heartbreak and despairC.pain and growth D.problems and society4.What is the best title for the passage?A.Swift comes to people’s attentionB.Swift rises to fameC.Swift wins many awardsD.Swift experiences real passionB(2013·西安市第一次质量检测)More than half of rich Americans have not shown their full wealth to their children,a new survey showed last Tuesday. The survey, published by the Bank of America, studied the rich with $3 million or more in assets. It found that “surprisingly few of those surveyed have well-developed plans to preserve and pass on their assets to their children”.The majority of the 457 people surveyed are self-made,first-generation rich.Fifty-two percent of parents have chosen not to tell their children just how wealthy they are,and 15 percent have given away nothing about the family wealth. One in three parents said they had never thought to do it.They are worried that their children would become lazy, spend money freely, make bad decisions and even become a target for gold diggers.Only 34 percent strongly agreed that their children would be able to handle any inheritance (遗产) they plan to leave them.“There is an expectation about the wealthy parents that they have a responsibility to pass down their fortune to the next generation,” said Sallie Krawcheck, president of the Global Wealth and Investment Management of the Bank of America.“Our research, however, uncovered changing views of what one generation owes the next.”The trend is led by the world’s richest man Bill Gates, who promised in 2008 that he would leave his $58 billion fortune to the charity started by him and his wife, the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation (基金会),and not to his children.“We want to give it back to society in the way that it will have the most positive impact,” he said.Of his plans for his children,Gates said:“I will give the kids some money but not a meaningful percentage...they will need to work but they will feel reasonably taken care of.”5.We can learn from the passage that________.A.rich parents may not know how to manage their inheritanceB.rich parents don’t equal rich kids,at least in the USC.American children don’t get to inherit their parents’ wealthD.poor children don’t expect themselves to be as rich as their parents6.According to the survey, most rich Americans________.A.think they owe their children nothingB.think it best to give their money back to societyC.doubt their children’s ability to handle wealthD.are confident of their children’s ability to handle wealth7.The und erlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refers to________.A.responsible children B.Bill Gates and his wifeC.first-generation rich D.rich parents8.From the last paragraph,we can see that Bill Gates wants to show________.A.the trend of leaving no inheritance to childrenB.the positive impact of charity on societyC.the way of giving back to societyD.the importance of independence for children答案:课时作业(七)Ⅰ.单项填空1.解析:考查情景交际。

The school has a long and distinguished history, and it is also one of the oldest charities in the country, providing scholarships to pupils and organizing a Charity of the Term. The curriculum(课程) at King's is based on strong academic roots. It emphasizes and relies upon what is best in traditional independent school education: scholarly excellence supported by a caring and tutorial system, and a wide-ranging co-curricular programme. However, it is continually adapting and reacting to the changing demands of modern education: new subjects are added, new teaching techniques are adopted, and there is an increasing awareness of the need to provide programmes of study that match individual needs and skills. The curriculum is divided into three units: the Lower School(Year 9 ), an introductory year; the Middle School(Years 10 and 11 ), working to GCSEs; and the Sixth Form(Years 12 and 13), taking AS and A levels. Full details can be found in: Shell Guide and Handbook; Middle School Academic Guide 2009—2011; Middle School Academic Guide 2010—2012; Sixth Form Guide 2009—2011 and Sixth Form Guide 2010—2012. Formal and structured educational support, for those who need it, is available at all levels. The well-stocked library is open 7 days and 6 evenings per week. ICT facilities (including the Internet) are available for all and the whole school(studies within the houses as well as classrooms) is extensively networked. Pupils are offered extensive career advice throughout their time at King's. Almost all go to university, either immediately or following a GAP year. The most popular university destinations are Cambridge, Bristol, Nottingham, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Manchester, and University College, London. Between 1970 and 2009, about 0.33 inch more rain fell than between 1930 and1969.These_changes may be connected by humidity(湿度), Changnon says. Humidity is the measure of how much moisture is in the air. And among plants, soybeans (大豆) and corn plants release a lot of moisture. These results by Changnon and Robock and their colleagues are the first step toward understanding a change in the weather. 15.What does the underlined term “These changes” refer to?
