Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Antarctica has actually become a kind of space station—a unique observation post for detecting important changes in the world’s environment.S1 Remote from major sourc es of pollution and the complex geological and ecological systems that prevail elsewhere, Antarctica makes possible scientific measurements that are often sharper and easier to interpret than those made in other parts of the world.Growing numbers of scientists therefore see Antarctica as a distant early warning sensor, where potentially dangerous global trends may be spotted before they show up to the north. One promising field of investigation is glaciology. Scholars from the United States, Switzerland, and France are pursuing seven separate but related projects that reflect their concern for the health of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet—a concern they believe the world at large should share. The Transantarctic Mountain, some of them more than 14,000 feet high, divide the continent into two very different regions. The part of the continent to the “east” of the mountains is a high plateau covered by an ice sheet nearly two miles thick. “West” of the mountain, the half of the continent south of the Americas is also covered by an ice sheet, but there the ice rests on rock that is mostly well below sea level. If theWest Antarctic Ice Sheet disappeared, the western part of the continent would be reduced to a sparse cluster of island. While ice and snow are obviously central to many environmental experiments, others focus on the mysterious“dry valley”of Antarctica, valleys that contain little ice or snow even in the depths of winter. Slashed through the mountains of southern Victoria land, these valleys once held enormous glaciers that descend 9,000 feet from the polar plateau to the Ross Sea.Now the glaciers are gone, perhaps a casualty of the global warming trend during the 10,000 years since the ice age. Even the snow that falls in the dry valleys is blasted out by vicious winds that roar down from the polar plateau to the sea. Left bare are spectacular gorges, rippled fields of sand dunes, clusters of boulders(大圆石)sculptured into fantastic shapes by 100mile an hour winds, and an aura of extraterrestrial desolation.Despite the unearthly aspect of the dry valleys, some scientists believe that they may carry a message of hope for the verdant(草木繁茂的)parts of the earth. Some scientists believe that in some cases the dry valleys may soak up pollutants faster than pollutants enter them.21.Antarctica is scientifically important in that ____.A) it is a space stationB) it is an ideal place for the investigation of glaciologyC) there is the mysterious dry valleyD) it can help people detect global environmental changes22.The reason for the disappearance of glaciers in the dry valley is ____.A) that they’ve desended to the Ross seaB) that they’ve been blasted out by vicious windsC) the global warming trend ever since the ice ageD) that they’ve been change d into gorges, sand dunes and boulders23.When the author calls Antarctica “distant early warning sensor”, heactually means that ____.A) such equipment has been set up for scientific purposeB) the research groups there are like such kind of sensorsC) potential global changes can be seen on Antarctica firstD) Antarctica is remote from other parts of the earth24.Which of the following statements is true according to the article?A) There is a cluster of island west of the Transantartic Mountain.B) Scientific research on Antarctica only centers on the ice and snow there.C) Dry valleys may be a place to dispose of our pollutants.D) All the countries on earth should be concerned about the health of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.25.The word “spotted”(2nd paragraph)can best be replaced by____.A) placedB) noticedC) fixedD) judgedPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The Carnegie Foundation report says that many colleges have tried to be “all things to all people”. In doing so, they have increasingly catered to a narrow minded careerism while failingto cultivate a global vision among their students. The current crisis, it contends, does not derive from a legitimate desire to put learning to productive ends. The problem is that in too many academic fields, the work has no context; skills, rather than being means, have become ends.Students are offered a variety of options and allowed to pick their way to a degree. In short, driven by careerism, “the nation’s colleges and universities are more successful in providing credentials(文凭)than in providing a quality education for their students.” The report concludes that the special challenge confronting the undergraduate college is one of shaping an “integrated core” of common learning. Such a core would introduce students “to essential knowledge, to connections across the disciplines, and in the end, to application of knowledge to life beyond the campus.”Although the key to a good college is a high quality faculty, the Carnegie study found that most colleges do very little to encourage good teaching. In fact, they do much to undermine it. As one professor observed:“Teaching is important, we are told, and yet faculty know that research and publication matter most.” Not surprisingly, over the last twenty years colleges and universities have failed to graduate half of their four year degree candidates. Faculty members who dedicate themselves to teaching soon discover that they will not be granted tenure (终身任期), promotion, or substantial salary increases. Yet 70 percent of all faculty say their interests lie more in teaching than in research. Additionally, a frequent complaint among young scholars is that “There is pressure to publish, although there isvirtually no interest among administrators or colleagues in the content of the publications.”26.When a college tries to be “all things to all people”(lines 2, Para. Ⅰ), it aims to ____.A) satisfy the needs of all kinds of students simultaneouslyB) focus on training students in various skillsC) encourage all sorts of people to attend collegeD) make learning serve academic rather than productive ends27.The word “core”(lines 15, 1st paragraph) might mean____.A) aimB) unitC) centerD) course28.One of the reasons for the current crisis in American colleges and universities is that ____.A) a narrow vocationalism has come to dominate many collegesB) students don’t have enough freedom in choosing what they want to learnC) skills are being taught as a means to an endD) students are not interested in learning29.American colleges and universities failed to graduate half of their fouryear degree candidates because ____.A) most of them lack high quality faculitesB) students are becoming more and more lazyC) there are not enough incentives for students to study hardD) they attach greater importance to research and publication than to teaching30.It can be inferred from the passage that high quality college educationcalls for ____.A) high quality facultiesB) a commitment to students and effective teachingC) the cultivation of students’ interest in learningD) dedication to research in frontier areas of knowledgePassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. The U.S. birthrate began to decline in the middle 1950’s, resulting in a smallercollege age population starting in the middle 1970’s.S4 Something else happened in the 1970’s: the price of oil increased tremendously, driving up the price of almost everything and making Americans aware that their large automobiles used a lot of gasoline. At the same time, foreign car manufacturers had begun to produce small fuel efficient cars in large quantities for the export market. Suddenly, the large, gas guzzling American cars were no longer attractive to American buyers, who began buying foreign cars by the thousands. The American automobile industry went into a recession. Thousands of automotive workers were laid off, as were thousands of people in industries indirectly connected with the auto industry. People who are laid off tend to keep what money they have for necessities, like food and housing. They do not have the extra money needed to send their children to college. Their children cannot pay their own college costs, because during a recession they cannot find jobs. Highunemployment means that more state funds must be used for social service—unemployment benefits and to aid dependent children, for example—than during more prosperous times. It also means, that the states have fewer funds than usual, because people are paying fewer taxes. Institutions of higher education depend on two major sources of income to keep them functioning: tuition from students and funds from the states. At the present time, there are fewer students than in the past and fewer state funds available for higher education. The colleges and universities are in trouble.31.What is the main idea of this passage?A) The rising of oil price drove up the price of everything.B) There were many reasons why higher education was in trouble in the 1970’s.C) Birthrate began to decline in the USA in 1950’s.D) High unemployment caused a lot of social problems.32.The phrase “laid off” can best be replaced by which of the following?A) Poor .B) Got rid of.C) Removed.D) Unemployed.33.American cars were not popular in their domestic markets because they were____.A) smallB) gas consumingC) fuel efficientD) not attractive34.The colleges and universities were in trouble because of the following reasons except that ____.A) they couldn’t get enough income to keep them runningB) young people couldn’t afford the tuition feesC) keeping them running at the same level would cost much moreD) social services need more state funds because of the recession35.All of the following statements are true EXCEPT ____.A) young people couldn’t afford their own tuition in the 1970’sB) it’s difficult for graduates from colleges to find a job in the 1970’sC) fewer parents could afford to send their children to college because ofthe recession in 1970’sD) Birthrate dropped in the 1970’s because of the recessionPassage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else. The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to findout how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recyclingwaste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metalsuch as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: first, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after thatgrounders and rollers break up everything that can be broken. Finally the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage. The first full scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, somebig cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.36.The main purpose of the passage is ____.A) to show us a future way of recycling wastesB) to tell the importance of recycling wastesC) to warn people the danger of some wastesD) to introduce a new recycling plant37.How many stages are there in the recycling process?A) 3.B) 4.C) 5.D) 6.38.What is the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants?A) To deal with wastes in a better way.B) It’s a good way to gain profits.C) It’s more economical than to dump wastes in some distant places.D) Energy can be got at a lower price.39.The first full—scale huge recycling plants ____.A) have been in existence for 15 yearsB) takes 15 years to buildC) can’t be built until 15 years laterD) will remain functioning for 15 years40.Which of the following statements is true?A) The word “rubbish” will soon disappear from dictionaries.B) Dangerous wastes can be recycled into nothing but energy.C) T o recycle paper and rubber will still be impossible even with the new recycling methods.D) Big cities will soon have their own recycling plants.PartⅢVocabulary and Structure (20 minutes)Directions:There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. 大学英语四级考试练习题一答案分析Part I WritingShould College Students Hold Credit Cards? With the rapid development of the economy, credit cards have been winding their way into campus life. According to a recent survey, the number of college students who possess one or more credit cards has been increasing continually during the past five years. With credit cards, college students can buy a wide variety of goods, especially those of great and urgent needs, such as daily necessities, electronic products, stationery and books. That can help to improve the quality of students9 life. However, holding a credit card may also make one purchase on impulse, which may result in a heavy financial burden and even a credit crisis. As far as I'm concerned, credit cards are not necessities for college students. And for those who already have a credit card, I think it is quite important to set up a concept of rational consumption.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1. A2. C3. C4. D5. B6. A7. 中国名校英语四级密卷(1)Part ⅡReading Comprehension (35 minutes)Directions:There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Antarctica has actually become a kind of space station—a unique observation post for detecting important chan ges in the world’s environment.S1 Remote from major sources of pollution and the complex geological and ecological systems that prevail elsewhere, Antarctica makes possible scientific measurements that are often sharper and easier to interpret than those made in other parts of the world.Growing numbers of scientists therefore see Antarctica as a distant early warning sensor, where potentially dangerous global trends may be spotted before they show up to the north. If the West Antarctic Ice Sheet disappeared, the western part of the continent would be reduced to a sparse cluster of island. Left bare are spectacular gorges, rippled fields of sand dunes, clusters of boulders(大圆石)sculptured into fantastic shapes by 100 mile an hour winds, and an aura of extraterrestrial desolation.Despite the unearthly aspect of the dry valleys, some scientists believe that they may carry a message of hope for the verdant(草木繁茂的)parts of the earth. Some scientists believe that in some cases the dry valleys may soak up pollutantsfaster than pollutants enter them.21.Antarctica is scientifically important in that ____.A) it is a space stationB) it is an ideal place for the investigation of glaciologyC) there is the mysterious dry valleyD) it can help people detect global environmental changes22.The reason for the disappearance of glaciers in the dry valley is ____.A) that they’ve desended to the Ross seaB) that they’ve been blasted out by vicious windsC) the global warming trend ever since the ice ageD) that they’ve been changed into gorges, sand dunes and boulders23.When the author calls Antarctica “distant early warning sensor”, he actually means that ____.A) such equipment has been set up for scientific purposeB) the research groups there are like such kind of sensorsC) potential global changes can be seen on Antarctica firstD) Antarctica is remote from other parts of the earth24.Which of the following statements is true according to the article?A) There is a cluster of island west of the Transantartic Mountain.B) Scientific research on Antarctica only centers on the ice and snow there.C) Dry valleys may be a place to dispose of our pollutants.D) All the countries on earth should be concerned about the health of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.25.The word “spotted”(2nd paragraph)can best be replaced by____.A) placedB) noticedC) fixedD) judgedPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The Carnegie Foundation repo rt says that many colleges have tried to be “all things to all people”. In doing so, they have increasingly catered to a narrow minded careerism while failing to cultivate a global vision among their students. The current crisis, it contends, does not derive from a legitimate desire to put learning to productive ends. The problem is that in too many academic fields, the work has no context; skills, rather than being means, have become ends.Students are offered a variety of options and allowed to pick their way to a degree. In short, driven by careerism, “the nation’s colleges and universities are more successful in providing credentials(文凭)than in providing a quality education for their students.” The report c oncludes that the special challenge confronting the undergraduate college is one of shaping an “integrated core” of common learning. Faculty members who dedicate themselves to teaching soon discover that they will not be granted tenure(终身任期), promotion, or substantial salary increases. Yet 70 percent of all faculty say their interests lie more in teaching than in research. Additionally, a frequent complaint among young scholars is that “The re is pressure to publish, although there is virtually no interest among administrators or colleagues in the content of the publications.”26.When a college tries to be “all things to all people”(lines 2, Para. Ⅰ), it aims to ____.A) satisfy the needs of all kinds of students simultaneouslyB) focus on training students in various skillsC) encourage all sorts of people to attend collegeD) make learning serve academic rather than productive ends27.The word “core”(lines 15, 1st paragraph) might mean____.A) aimB) unitC) centerD) course28.One of the reasons for the current crisis in American colleges and universities is that ____.A) a narrow vocationalism has come to dominate many collegesB) students don’t have enough freedom in choosing what they want to learnC) skills are being taught as a means to an endD) students are not interested in learning29.American colleges and universities failed to graduate half of their fouryear degree candidates because ____.A) most of them lack high quality faculitesB) students are becoming more and more lazyC) there are not enough incentives for students to study hardD) they attach greater importance to research and publication than to teaching30.It can be inferred from the passage that high quality college education calls for ____.A) high quality facultiesB) a commitment to students and effective teachingC) the cultivation of students’ interest in learningD) dedication to research in frontier areas of knowledgePassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. The U.S. birthrate began to decline in the middle 1950’s, resulting in a smaller college age population starting in the middle 1970’s.S4 Something else happened in the 1970’s: the price of oil increased tremendously, driving up the price of almost everything and making Americans aware that their large automobiles used a lot of gasoline. High unemployment means that more state funds must be used for social service—unemployment benefits and to aid dependent children, for example—than during more prosperous times. The aim is to findout how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: first, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that grounders and rollers break up everything that can be broken. Finally the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage. The first full scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away.Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.36.The main purpose of the passage is ____.A) to show us a future way of recycling wastesB) to tell the importance of recycling wastesC) to warn people the danger of some wastesD) to introduce a new recycling plant37.How many stages are there in the recycling process?A) 3.B) 4.C) 5.D) 6.38.What is the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants?A) To deal with wastes in a better way.B) It’s a good way to gain profits.C) It’s more economical than to dump wastes in some distant places.D) Energy can be got at a lower price.39.The first full—scale huge recycling plants ____.A) have been in existence for 15 yearsB) takes 15 years to buildC) can’t be built until 15 years laterD) will remain functioning for 15 years40.Which of the following statements is true?A) The word “rubbish” will soon disappear from dictionaries.B) Dangerous wastes can be recycled into nothing but energy.C) To recycle paper and rubber will still be impossible even with the new recycling methods.D) Big cities will soon have their own recycling plants.PartⅢVocabulary and Structure (20 minutes)Directions:There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. P. Richard Weinerman, profe ssor of medicine and public health. Dr. Weinerman’s sharp indictment of the automobile came in a discussion of human environment on Yale Reports, a radio program broadcast by Station WTIC in Hartford, Connecticut. The program opened a three part series on “Staying Alive”.“For the first time in human history, the problem of man’s survival has to do with his control of man made hazards,” Dr. Weinerman said.“Before this, the problem had been the control of natural hazards.”Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.11.What is the main idea of the passage?12.Why could automobiles cause heart disease?13.For the 1st time, what does the problem of man’s survival have to do with?Passage TwoA small dog brought disaster to a small English town last week. It was trying to cross a busy street but was too frightened to leave the strip in the middle of the street.A truck drive parked his truck on the side of the road and got out to help it. While he was going to get the dog, his truck rolled down the street. It smashed into four parked cars, crashed through a fence, rolled down a bank and smashed into a row of houses. Only the driver was hurt. The dog bit him on the hand while he was carrying it.Here is another story about dogs. A nine year old child who nearly drowned while she was swimming in a home swimming pool, was saved by the family dog on Saturday. The child was alone in the large pool at the time. The family of the dog said it would receive an extra large bone as a reward. Questions 14 to 17 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.14.What happened to the dog that brought disaster to the town?15.Who was hurt in the disaster?16.Where did the second story about dog take place?17.What would be the reward given to the dog in the second story?Passage ThreeIf you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year.A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington, concluded from other men’s work and his own among people in different climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer.Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.Fall is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.Questions 18 to 20 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.18.What is the passage mainly about?19.What is the best season for thinking?20.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?答案与详解Part Ⅰ Listening ComprehensionSection A1. 【答案】C【试题分析】推理判断题。

Identify the paragraphfrom which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking thecorresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.How Your Language Affects Your Wealth and Health[A] Does the language we speak determine how healthy and rich we will be? New research by Keith Chen of YaleBusiness School suggests so. The structure of languages affects our judgments and decisions about the future and this might have dramatic long-term consequences.[B] There has been a lot of research into how we deal with the future. For example, the famous marshmallow (棉花糖) studies of Walter Mischel and colleagues showed that being able to resist temptation is predictive of future success. Four-year-old kids were given a marshmallow and were told that if they do not eat that marshmallow and wait for the experimenter to come back, they will get two marshmallows instead of one.Follow-up studies showed that the kids who were able to wait for the bigger future reward became more successful young adults.[C] Resisting our impulses for immediate pleasure is often the only way to attain the outcomes that are importantto us. We want to keep a slim figure but we also want that last slice of pizza. We want a comfortable retirement, but we also want to drive that dazzling car, go on that dream vacation, or get those gorgeous shoes. Some people are better at delaying gratification (满足) than others. Those people have a better chance of accumulating wealth and keeping a healthy life style. They are less likely to be impulse buyers or smokers, or to engage in unsafe sex.[D] Chen’s recent findings suggest that an unlikely factor, language, strongly affects our future-oriented behavior. Some languages strongly distinguish the present and the future. Other languages only weakly distinguish the present and t he future. Chen’s recent research suggests that people who speak languages that weakly distinguish the present and the future are better prepared for the future. They accumulate more wealth and they are better able to maintain their health. The way these people conceptualize the future is similar to theway they conceptualize the present. As a result, the future does not feel very distant and it is easier for them to act in accordance with their future interests.[E] Different languages have different ways of talking about the future. Some languages, such as English, Korean, and Russian, require their speakers to refer to the future explicitly (明确地) . Every time English-speakers talk about the future, they have to use future markers such as “will” or “going to”. In other languages, such as Mandarin, Japanese, and German, future markers are not obligatory (强制性的). The future is often talked about similar to the way present is talked about and the meaning is understood from the context. A Mandarin speaker wh o is going to go to a seminar might say “Wo qu ting jiangzuo,” which translates to “I go listen seminar.” Languages such as English constantly remind their speakers that future events are distant. For speakers of languages such as Mandarin future feels closer. As a consequence, resisting immediate impulses and investing for the future is easier for Mandarin speakers.[F] Chert analyzed individual-level data from 76 developed and developing countries. This data includes people’seconomic decisions, such as whether they saved any money last year, the languages they speak at home, demographics (人口统计资料), and cultural factors such as “saving is an important cultural value for me.”He also analyzed individual-level data on people’ s retirement assets, smoking and exercising habits, and general health in older age. Lastly, he analyzed national-level data that indicates national savings rates, country GDP and GDP growth rates, country demographics, and proportions of people speaking different languages.[G] People’s savings rates are affected by various factors such as their income, education level, age, religiousconnection, their countries’ legal systems, and their cultural values. After those factors were accounted for, the effect of language on people’s savings rates turned out to be big. Speaking a language that has obligatory future markers, such as English, makes people 30 percent less likely to save money for the future. This effect is as large as the effect of unemployment. Being unemployed decreases the likelihood of saving by about 30 percent as well.[H] Similar analyses showed that speaking a language that does not have obligatory future markers, such asMandarin, makes people accumulate more retirement assets, smoke less, exercise more, and generally be healthier in older age. Countries’ national saving s rates are also affected by language. Having a larger proportion of people speaking languages that does not have obligatory future markers makes national savings rates higher.[I] At a more practical level, researchers have been looking for ways to help people act in accordance with theirlong-term interests. Recently, findings suggest that making the future feel closer to the present might improve future-oriented behavior. For instance, researchers recently presented people with renderings of their future selves made using age-progression algorithms (算法) that forecast how physical appearances would change over time. One group of participants saw a digital representation of their current selves in a virtual mirror, and the other group saw an age-morphed version of their future selves. Those participants who sawthe age-morphed version of their future selves allocated more money toward a hypothetical savings account. The intervention brought people’ s future to the present and as a result they saved more for the future.[J] Chen’s research shows that language structures our future-related thoughts. Language has been used before to alter time perception with surprising effects. Ellen Langer and colleagues famously improved older people’ s physical health by simple interventions including asking them to talk about the events of twenty years ago as if it they were happening now. Talking about the past as if it were the present changed people’s mindsets and their mindsets affected their physical states. Chen’s re search points at the possibility that the way we talk about the future can shape our mindsets. Language can move the future back and forth in our mental space and this might have dramatic influences on our judgments and decisions.36. Usually, preventing ourselves from enjoying immediate pleasure impulsively is the only way to achieve the outcomes that are important to us.37. The structure of languages influences us when we are making a judgment or decision about the future.38. Speaking a language that has obligatory future markers and being unemployed nearly share the same percentage of decreasing the likelihood of saving.39. According to the well-known marshmallow studies, people who can resist temptation tend to be successful in the future.40. People who speak languages like English are more likely to feel that the future events are distant.41. National savings rates of countries are influenced by language as well.42. In Chen’s recent research, people who speak languages in which the present and the future are weakly distinguished are more prepared for the future.43. Recent findings show that it is possible to improve future-oriented behavior through making the future feel closer to the present.44. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 and 50 are based on the following passage.People’s tastes in recreation differ widely. At a recent festival of pop-music in the Isle of Wight, crowds of teenagers flocked to listen to their favorite singers and musicians. They went with single railway tickets and slept in the open, a very risky thing to do in the climate of Britain, even in August. They were packed together like sardines for four days. There were innumerable thieves, a gang of roughs tried several times to break things up, and police were everywhere. At the end of the festival many young fans found themselves broke, with no money left, and they had difficulty in getting back home. Most people would consider these conditions a nightmare ofdiscomfort; the fans appeared to enjoy it all enormously.Even in the overcrowded United Kingdom there are large tracts of open un-spoilt country, where people with more traditional tastes can go for quiet, and for the sense of freedom they derive from contact with nature. In the national parks especially, modern development of housing and industry is strictly controlled. Visitors may walk for miles through landscape of the greatest beauty and wildness, and often of considerable historic or scientific interest. Along the coasts of some of the maritime counties, public pathways have been created; these paths stretch for many miles along cliffs that look out on the Atlantic Ocean or the English Channel. Another path, lying inland, goes along the range of mountains in the north of England. It is called the Pennine Way. Here, the long-distance walker and the nature-lover can find much to enjoy, without feeling disturbed by large numbers of their fellows.Yet few people make full use of the national parks established for everyone's benefit. The commonest thing nowadays is for family groups to motor out to a beautiful spot and park their cars in a lay-by (英国的路旁停车带). A picnic basket is produced, along with a folding table and chairs, a kettle and a portable stove. They then settle down to a picnic in the lay-by beside the car. Apparently their idea of enjoyment is to get into the fresh air and among the country sights and sounds without having to wall a yard. They seem almost to like to hear and to smell the traffic.46. In Britain it is very risky to __________.A. go with a single railway ticketB. listen to pop-music at the festivalC. sleep in the openD. pack together in crowds47. At the end of the festival, many young fans __________.A. were arrested by the policeB. had spent most of their moneyC. were sleeping outD. became quite penniless48. Even in the overcrowded United Kingdom there are large __________.A. tracks through the open countryB. areas of country without soilC. areas of countryside not developedD. expanses of land where nobody works49. Public pathways are created for people to __________.A. commute to workB. enjoy long-distance walkingC. wall to maritime countiesD. visit the historic or scenic sites50. Family groups nowadays like to __________.A. have meals out of doors by the road-sideB. go for a walk away from homeC. drive out past the beautiful placesD. hear and smell the animalsPassage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else--he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute bluntly; he does so with skill and polish. “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way.Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look around”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the look-out for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. So most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.51. When a man is buying clothes, __________.A. he chooses things that others recommendB. he buys cheap things, regardless of qualityC. he buys good things, so long as they are not too expensiveD. he does not mind how much he has to pay for the right things52. In commerce a good salesman is one who __________.A. sells something a customer does not particularly wantB. always has in stock the thing the customer wantsC. can find out quickly the goods requiredD. does not waste his time on difficult customers53. What does a man do when he cannot get exactly what he wants?A. He buys something that is similar enough to the ideal one.B. He usually does not buy anything.C. At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.D. So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.54. According to this passage, when shopping for clothes, women __________.A. often buy things without thinkingB. seldom buy cheap clothesC. welcome suggestions from anyoneD. never take any advice55. What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?A. The fact that men do not try clothes on in a shop.B. Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.C. Women stand up while shopping, but men sit down.D. The time they take over buying clothes.Part ⅣTranslation(30 minutes) Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese intoEnglish. Part IChoosing an Occupation【写作思路】本文是一篇关于择业的议论文。
短文需要说明慎重择业相当重要,并提出多种指导择业的方法。
【参考范文】Choosing an OccupationOne of the most important problems a young person faces is deciding what to do. There are some people, of course, who from the time are six years old “know” that they want to be doctors or pilots or fire fighters, but the majority of us do not get around to making a decision about an occupation or career until somebody or something forces us to face the problem.Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about as you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that you will have to take special courses to qualify for a particular kind of work, or you may find out that you will need to get actual work experience to gain enough knowledge to qualify for a particular job. Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help in making your decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are professionally qualified to give you detailed information about job qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas with family members and friends who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions.Part II【全文翻译】我们会陷入水资源枯竭的困境吗?想象一只“幽灵船”沉入了沙土中,任其留在干旱的沙土中腐烂掉。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Antarctica has actually become a kind of space station—a unique observation post for detecting important changes in the world’s environment.S1 Remote from major sources of pollution and the complex geological and ecological systems that prevail elsewhere, Antarctica makes possible scientific measurements that are often sharper and easier to interpret than those made in other parts of the world.Growing numbers of scientists therefore see Antarctica as a distant early warning sensor, where potentially dangerous global trends may be spotted before they show up to the north. The part of the cont inent to the “east” of the mountains is a high plateau covered by an ice sheet nearly two miles thick. “West” of the mountain, the half of the continent south of the Americas is also covered by an ice sheet, but there the ice rests on rock that is mostly well below sea level. If the West Antarctic Ice Sheet disappeared, the western part of the continent would be reduced to a sparse cluster of island. Some scientists believe that in some cases the dry valleys may soak up pollutantsfaster than pollutants enter them.21.Antarctica is scientifically important in that ____.A) it is a space stationB) it is an ideal place for the investigation of glaciologyC) there is the mysterious dry valleyD) it can help people detect global environmental changes22.The reason for the disappearance of glaciers in the dry valley is ____.A) that they’ve desended to the Ross seaB) that they’ve been blasted out by vicious windsC) the global warming trend ever since the ice ageD) that they’ve been changed into gorges, sand dunes and boulders23.When the author calls Antarctica “distant early warning sensor”, heactually means that ____.A) such equipment has been set up for scientific purposeB) the research groups there are like such kind of sensorsC) potential global changes can be seen on Antarctica firstD) Antarctica is remote from other parts of the earth24.Which of the following statements is true according to the article?A) There is a cluster of island west of the Transantartic Mountain.B) Scientific research on Antarctica only centers on the ice and snow there.C) Dry valleys may be a place to dispose of our pollutants.D) All the countries on earth should be concerned about the health of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.25.The word “spotted”(2nd paragraph)can best be replaced by____.A) placedB) noticedC) fixedD) judgedPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The Carnegie Foundation report says that many colleges have tried to be “all things to all people”. In short, driven by careerism, “the nation’s colleges and universities are more successful in providing credentials(文凭)than in providing a quality education for their students.” The report concludes that the special challenge confronting the undergraduate college is one of shaping an “integrated core” of common learning. Such a core would introduce students “to essentia l knowledge, to connectionsacross the disciplines, and in the end, to application of knowledge to life beyond the campus.”Although the key to a good college is a high quality faculty, the Carnegie study found that most colleges do very little to encourage good teaching. In fact, they do much to undermine it. As one professor observed:“Teaching is important, we are told, and yet faculty know that research and publication matter most.” Not surprisingly, over the last twenty years colleges and universities have failed to graduate half of their four year degree candidates. Faculty members who dedicate themselves to teaching soon discover that they will not be granted tenure(终身任期), promotion, or substantial salary increases. Yet 70 percent of all faculty say their interests lie more in teaching than in research. Additionally, a frequent complaint among young scholars is that “There is pressure to publish, although there is virtually no interest among administrators or colleagues in the content of the publicati ons.”26.When a college tries to be “all things to all people”(lines 2, Para. Ⅰ), it aims to ____.A) satisfy the needs of all kinds of students simultaneouslyB) focus on training students in various skillsC) encourage all sorts of people to attend collegeD) make learning serve academic rather than productive ends27.The word “core”(lines 15, 1st paragraph) might mean____.A) aimB) unitC) centerD) course28.One of the reasons for the current crisis in American colleges and universities i s that ____.A) a narrow vocationalism has come to dominate many collegesB) students don’t have enough freedom in choosing what they want to learnC) skills are being taught as a means to an endD) students are not interested in learning29.American colleges and universities failed to graduate half of their fouryear degree candidates because ____.A) most of them lack high quality faculitesB) students are becoming more and more lazyC) there are not enough incentives for students to study hardD) they attach greater importance to research and publication than to teaching30.It can be inferred from the passage that high quality college educationcalls for ____.A) high quality facultiesB) a commitment to students and effective teachingC) t he cultivation of students’ interest in learningD) dedication to research in frontier areas of knowledgePassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. The U.S. birthrate began to decline in the middle 1950’s, resulting in a sma ller college age population starting in the middle 1970’s.S4 Something else happened in the 1970’s: the price of oil increased tremendously, driving up the price of almost everything and making Americans aware that their large automobiles used a lot of gasoline. High unemployment means that more state funds must be used for social service—unemployment benefits and to aid dependent children, for example—than during more prosperous times. It also means, that the states have fewer funds than usual, because people are paying fewer taxes. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else. The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to findout how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like th is: first, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through apowerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that grounders and rollers break up everything that can be broken. Finally the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage. The first full scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, somebig cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants b efore long.36.The main purpose of the passage is ____.A) to show us a future way of recycling wastesB) to tell the importance of recycling wastesC) to warn people the danger of some wastesD) to introduce a new recycling plant37.How many stages are there in the recycling process?A) 3.B) 4.C) 5.D) 6.38.What is the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants?A) To deal with wastes in a better way.B) It’s a good way to gain profits.C) It’s more economical than t o dump wastes in some distant places.D) Energy can be got at a lower price.39.The first full—scale huge recycling plants ____.A) have been in existence for 15 yearsB) takes 15 years to buildC) can’t be built until 15 years laterD) will remain functioning for 15 years40.Which of the following statements is true?A) The word “rubbish” will soon disappear from dictionaries.B) Dangerous wastes can be recycled into nothing but energy.C) To recycle paper and rubber will still be impossible ev en with the new recycling methods.D) Big cities will soon have their own recycling plants.PartⅢVocabulary and Structure (20 minutes)Directions:There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part.
