Unit 2The universal language音乐,是人们生活中不可缺少的一部分。
什么是音乐?你喜欢什么样的音乐?What is music?Suppose you hit a wooden table with your hand. It makes asound. Now suppose you hit a ball. It makes a sound. The secondsound is called a tone. A tone is a single musical sound. Music isthe art of organizing tones into meaningful patterns of sound. Wemight call it the language of tones. Sometimes the language ofmusic speaks to us in tones sounding after one another in melody. Or the tones could be sounding together in harmony. When tones hit with one another, it is not in harmony. But this hit is often full of meaning. What we call melody is given meaning by its rising or falling or moving straight ahead. It is also given meaning by its rhythm of beats and phrasing, its speed and how loud or soft it is at any moment. All of this sounds very technical. But it doesn't have to be understood or thought about for us to enjoy music. What music means to us often can not be put into words. We can feel that the music expresses joy or sorrow, pleasure, tenderness, love, anger—all kinds of things and feelings that words alone could never do.Music can also be enjoyed just for its beauty, and not for what it is saying. We can get pleasure from even a single tone of voice, violin, horn, or some other instruments. We may love a beautiful melody for many years of our lives and always enjoy hearing it.There are, of course, many forms of music, from the anthem to the symphony, and many types of music, from folk music to opera.1.tone n.乐音2.melody n. 旋律3.harmony n. 协调4.tenderness n. 柔情5.anthem n. 赞美诗1.Do you like music? Fantasy literature has been distinguished from other forms of literature by its style and its freedom of expression; an author has the ability to use any story-telling element to strengthen the narrative. Stories involving mysterious magic and terrible monsters have existed in spoken forms before the appearance printed literature. Homer's Odyssey satisfies the definition of the fantasy genre with its magic, gods, heroes, adventures and monsters. Fantasy literature, as a distinct type, emerged in Victorian times. Symbolism plays a huge role in fantasy literature.J. R. R. Tolkien played a large role in the popularization and accessibility of the fantasy genre with his highly successful publications TheHobbit(1937) and TheLordoftheRings (1954-1955). Rarely does one consider modern fantasy without thinking of the image of Tolkien and his creations. Tolkien was largely influenced by an ancient body of Anglo-Saxon myths, particularly Beo w ulf, as well as modern works such as TheWormOuroboros by E. R. Eddison. It was after the publication of his work that the genre began to receive the name “fantasy”. Tolkien's close friend C. S. Lewis, author of TheChroniclesofNarnia and a fellow English professor with similar interests, also helped to publicize the fantasy genre. Authors such as John Flanagan, J.K.Rowling, Terry Brooks, George R. R. Martin, David Kier, Steven Erikson, Robert Jordan, Rick Riordan, Scott Lynch, and partly Laurell K. Hamilton, and Angie Sage are maintaining the genre's popularity.Though it is not uncommon for fantasy novels to be ranked onTheNe w YorkTimes Best Seller list, to date the only fantasy novelists whose workshave debuted at number one on the list are Robert Jordan, George R.
