A series of photos posted by Bullitt Central High School on social media shows students taking “adulting conference” are learning about personal finances, resumes and other essential skills at the event, which has been widelyreported on the local and national news outlets.“I saw a Facebook post that parents passed around saying they needed a class in high school on taxes and cooking,” AC organizer Hardin told Louisville's WAVE 3 News. Those skills are taught at school theoretically, she said, but the event gave students a chance to fill in gaps in their knowledge.Students could choose to attend three workshops out of 11 total options, the school says. The workshops were held in cooperation with numerous community partners. Some young people have left home and graduated school without having those gaps filled, according to a report this week from CBS New York, which documented a trend of young people seeking outclasses to learn basic life skills. While attending a cooking class, 29-year-old Elena Toumaras told the station she's struggling with “simple things.”“I was so used to, when living at home, my mom always cooking,” she told the station. An“Adulting School” in Portlan d, Maine, aims to use a new online format to teach the youths skills like conflict resolution, sewing and appreciation for all, the station says.Students' financial literacy has been of particular concern to some experts, as financial education in schools has stagnated(停滞)in the U.S., with only 17 states requiring students to take classes in personal finance—a number that hasn't risen in years.“The majority of U.S. states are failing our students by declining to offer these fundamental courses which are critical to their financial stability and security later in life. And this will be changed.” Nan J. Morrison, president and CEO of the Council for Economic Education, told CNBC.(1)What do we know about the “adulting conference”?A It draws much attention from the media.B It is not taught at home.C It teaches seniors how to be a reporter.D It is broadcast live to the public.(2)What can we learn from what Christy Hardin said?A Only taxes and cooking classes ale demanded.B AC helps put what has been learnt into practice. C Many parents passed by the AC classroom.D The event was organized by some parents.(3)Why did Elena Toumaras attend a cooking class?A To document a trend.B To st ruggle with “simple things”.C To satisfy her mother.D To learn basic life skills.(4)What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?A Expels will be concerned about finance.B Fundamental majors won't be provided in schools.C More financial courses will be offered.D More states will decline students' courses.3. The Spanish sculptor Isaac Cordal sees the city as his playground. He specializes in miniature, a street art often representing a social commentary as a critical observation on capitalism, power and so on.Cordal first models the sculptures in clay then reproduces them in cement(水泥)about15cm in height.“As a material, cement seems very symbolic because it is one of our most recognizable foot prints against nature.”he says.“Today we have been too used to cement city habitat.”For several years he’s been working on the project, Cement Eclipses, referring to the state when a building covers the sun:“It’s a critical reflection on the idea of progress.”These tiny cement figures have appeared in cities across Europe, found sitting on top of bus shelters or drowning in the grass land of the big city.“The street became a perfect setting in which I could find enough landscapes for them.Due to their small size and color, they go really well into the urban environment. They even normally go unseen by passersby.I’m very interested in that moment of surprise when someone accidentally discovers them.”he says.“Nowadays there is a fear of not being seen in the public area, so everything is always big and bold.We become a product of this and do not focus in as much.I think it is good to pay attention to small details. My work is a reward for those who do and it allows us to understand and change the w orld we have created in a different angle.”Cordal says.(1)Which of the following best explains“miniature”Underlined in paragraph 1 ?A Tiny sculpture.B Small playground.C Social comments.D Critical observation.(2)What’s Cordal’s attitude toward cement city habitat?A Indifferent.B Critical.C Neutral.D Supportive.(3)What does Cordal intend to tell us in the last paragraph?A Everything big in public is attractive.B Being small may be a fear in public.C We need to focus on the details of the products.D His work helps us to see the world differently.(4)What does the text mainly talk about?A Cordal and his street art.B Ways to be a sculptor.C Materials used for sculptures.D Reflections on city progress.4. 阅读理解If American waterways had ever been voted on the yearbook, the Buffalo River could easily have been named Ugliest. It could be hard to find hope there. It took decades for public perception of the river to shift. But activist citizens, who collaborated with industry, government, and environment groups never gave up on their polluted river—the Buffalo River gradually went from being considered a lost cause to a place worth fighting for. And by now the cleaned—up water is one of Buffalo's biggest attractions.By the 1960s, the river was seen as one of the worst sources of pollution pouring into the Great Lakes. The Buffalo River had caught fire many times. The surface had an oily layer, and any fish caught there were not eatable. The waterway's fate started shifting in the mid-1960s. Stanley Spisiak was a local Polish—American jeweler by day, but by evening he was the kind of guy who'd chase down dumpers(垃圾车)he spotted on the Buffalo River. By 1966 he found himself winning the National Wildlife Federation's “Water Conservationist of the Year” award. And before long he got a nickname:“Mr. Buffalo River.” But there was only so much he could do—the river was still declared biologically dead in 1969.Jill Spisiak Jedlicka is his great-grandniece. She picks up where he left off by directing theriver's protector organization, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper. Professor Schneekloth and seven friends founded the organization as an all-volunteer nonprofit in 1989, after organizing the first river cleanup that year. Today the group employs 27 full-time workers and has helped oversee the Buffalo River's $100 million restoration. So far, the Buffalo River's water quality has restored, but it is still an ongoing issue, as sewage(污水)can overflow into the river after storms. Habitat restoration continues as well; fish and plantings are still being sampled to measure how well it's gone.(1)What did the Buffalo River use to be?A A waterway on the yearbook.B A river heavily polluted.C A great attraction of Buffalo's.D A place worth fighting for.(2)Why was Mr. Spisiak named “Mr. Buffalo River”?A Because his fate shifted in the 1960s.B Because he spotted dumpers on theRiver. C Because he spared no efforts to protect the river. D Because the river was declared biologically dead.(3)How long did it take for the fiver to restore?A More than half a century.B Just four decades.C About 30 years.D Only 27 years.(4)What can be a suitable title for this text?A The restoration of the Buffalo RiverB Stanley Spisiak: The “Mr. BuffaloRiver” C The future of the Buffalo River D River protection: A long way to go二、七选五5. in the Internet age is lonely﹣or is it?That's what experts in human interaction are debating aftera new Stanford University survey has been published.According to the study, the more time people spend online, the less they can spare for real﹣life relationships with family and friends. The researchers asked 113 people about the Web's influence on daily activities.36% of those people are online for more than five hours a week."As Internet use becomes more widespread,it will have an increasingly isolating (孤立的)effect on society,"says Robert Kraut, one of the researchers.Scholars and Web lovers criticized the study for stretching its data to make the "isolating" point. While 13% of regular Web users admitted the loss of time with loved ones,60% reported watching less TV.The survey also shows that E﹣mail is the most popular online activity,If some of webheads (网虫)spend what was once passive TV time keeping company with friends via E﹣mails,"that's a move toward greater connectedness,"says Paul Resnick,a professor at the University of Michigan. This isn't the first claim that the Web should be criticized,A 1998 report monitored 73 Pittsburgh﹣area families' Net use for a year.People who used the Internet more "talked less to family members and reported being lonelier and more depressed." says Robert Kraut."It's true that there have been big declines in social connectedness over the past decades, but those declines began before the Internet was invented," says Thomas Putnam. As Amitay Etzioni says, the Internet gives us a different kind of social life﹣not better or worse than in greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Some procedures require the consumption of large amounts of fossil fuels, such as the transportation and storage of food products.Other factors that cause great damage to our environment include the overuse of fresh water. The production of beef is more damaging to the environment than that of any other food we consume,Raising large numbers of cattle requires the production of large amounts of food for the animals. It's estimated that producing one pound of beef requires seven pounds of feed.Land use is also a problem. If the cattle are free﹣range cattle, large areas of land are required for them to live on.This has led to disastrous forest cutting and the loss of rare plants and animal species, particularly in tropical rain forests in Central and South America.Another problem specific to beef production is methane emissions (甲烷排放).Although many people are aware of the damaging effects of carbon dioxide, they don't realize methane's global warming potential is25 times worse, making it a more dire problem.Unfortunately, beef consumption is growing rapidly. This is the result of simple supply and demandfactors.Specifically, there are two main causes of demand that are encouraging the production of more supply.First, the increase in the world population means there are more people to consume meat. The second factor is socioeconomic advancement. As citizens in developing nations become financially stable, they can afford to buy more meat. Therefore, one way to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions is for people around the world to significantly cut down on the amount of beef they eat.(1)Which of the following is TRUE?A.Raising free﹣range cattle is eco﹣friendly.B.People cut down trees for animal habitats.C.Producing beef can damage the environment.D.Carbon dioxide causes far more harm than methane.(2)The underlined word "dire" in Para.4 means.A.urgentB.commonC.typicalD.avoidable(3)Beef production is growing rapidly But there is still a voice in my heart asking if this is who I truly am. Only in silence do I hear the self and wonder who that person might be.So I booked a trip to find out. I travelled, for the first time, without my husband or kids. I went to Iceland with a friend, who shares an appreciation for wilderness and silence. For six days, we were immersed (沉浸) in wild, raw scenery and real weather ﹣ all kinds of weather. Climbing a mountain against rain and returning to a tent for a simple meal reminds you how little you actually need. And how strong it feels to be uncomfortable sometimes.I found silence in Iceland, and time to consider the me outside of career and the me outside of kinds as I shared stories with strangers. When I stopped talking and just listened, I became more generous. I learned that choosing to be generous can create more space, more food and more warmth. But I didn't really gain any better appreciation of what I want from life or my job. I suspect the anxiety that drove me to seek silence in Iceland was losing sight of my ability to choose gratitude and joy, and to be present in the challenges I set in my career and my family.I came home to noise, rush and love, with no less confusion on who I want to be. I know the answer isn't waiting out there on the top of a mountain in Iceland. The answer is infront of me with every step on my own life's path, and in every choice I make.(1)Why did the author take a trip to Iceland?________A To gain a new experience.B To enjoy family happiness.C To appreciate natural beauty.D To better understand herself..(2)What do we learn about the author's trip?________A Exciting.B Difficult.C Relaxing.D Adventurous..(3)What change happened to the author?________A She felt lonelier.B She felt more anxious.C She became more confident.D She became more caring..(4)What will the author do in the future?________A Go back to nature.B Face reality bravely.C Travel to Iceland moreoften. D Pay less attention to her feelings.3. In America, the number of people killed in car crashes in 2016 was above 40, 000 for the first time in a decade, data released on Wednesday shows."Americans believe there is nothing we can do to stop crashes from happening, but thatisn't true.We are behind the rest of the developed world in addressing highway fatalities(死亡).We just haven't been willing to do what needs to be done, "said Deborah A.P.Hersman, president of the National Safety Council. The National Safety Council data shows a 6 percent increase in deaths in 2018 when compared with 2015 and a 3 percent increase in the number of miles Americana drove in 2016."Motor vehicle fatality numbers have been ringing the alarm for two years, "Hersman said."Unfortunately, we have been blind to the data and the killings on our roadways.Ifwe fail to take action, the death tell will continue to rise.""The trend is clear: After years of progress, highway deaths are heading in the wrong direction, "said Jonathan Adkins, a state safety official. The number of people killed reached a record low of 32, 675 in 2014, according to NHTSA statistics. That record followed a fairly steady downward track for the past six years that experts attributed it primarily to safety features that have been built into cars and trucks.Safety advances including increased seat﹣belt use, air bags, anti﹣lock braking, stability controls and electronic warnings and cameras. The bad economy and high gas prices also influenced the reduction in deaths. Now, with unemployment and gas prices both low, more people are driving for work and pleasure trips. "It's not just that Americans drive more miles when the economy improves; it's the kind of miles they drive, "said Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.(1)What's Hersman's attitude towards the present situation?________A It has been getting better.B It can hardly be improved.C The efforts are far from enough.D Much work hart already been done..(2)What do we learn about the number of highway deaths in 2013 in America?________A It's lower than that in 2014.B It's lower than that in 2010.C It's the lowest in recent years.D It's the highest in recently years..(3)What will happen with the economic recovery?________A The gas prices will go up.B The gas price will go down.C There will be more highway deaths.D There will be fewer highway deaths..(4)What would be the best title for the passage?________A Traffic Deaths Are on the RiseB Highway Deaths Will Drop offC Measures to Handle Car CrashesD Safety Advances in Cars Are Made.4.It sounds almost too good to be true, but a new study on sleeping brains suggests that listening to languages while you sleep can actually help you to learn them. For the study, researchers played recordings of foreign words and their translations to subjects enjoying slow wave sleep, a stage when a person has little consciousness of theirenvironment. To ensure that the results were not compromised by foreign language words that subjects may have had some contact with at some point in their waking lives, researchers made up totally nonexistent foreign words. When the subjects woke up, they were presented with the made-up words again without their translations. The subjects were then asked to imagine whether this made-up word indicated an object that was smaller or larger. This vague(模糊的)way of testing their understanding of the words is an approach that is supposed to tap into the unconscious memory.Unbelievably, the subjects were able to correctly classify the words in this way at an accuracy rate that was 10 percent higher than random chance. That's not a rate high enough to have them suddenly communicating in a foreign tongue, but it is enough to suggest that the brain is still absorbing information on some level, even during sleep.Researchers have long known that sleep is important for memory, but previously its role in memory was thought to relate only to the preservation and organisation of memories acquired during wakefulness. This is the first time that memory formation has been shown to be active during sleep. In other words, our brains are listening to the world, and learning about it, even when our conscious selves are not present. The next step for researchers will be to see if new information can be learned quicker during wakefulness if it was already presented during sleep. If so, it could forever change how we train our brains to learn new things. Sleep learning might become a widespread practice.(1)Why did researchers use some made-up words in the study?A To guarantee the accuracy of the test result.B To increase the difficulty of testing information.C To avoid the subjects cheating in the experiment.D To test if our brain are good at learning something new.(2)What were the subjects asked to do in the study?A Classify what they heard by size.B Make up a word to represent "large" or "small".C Repeat the words they heard in the sleep.D Imagine the meanings of the made-up words.(3)What conclusion did researchers draw from this study?A Sleep is necessary for a good memory.B Memory formation goes on during sleep.C Listening during sleep is good for our brains.D Learning languages in sleep has better effects.(4)What will be the researchers' next plan?A To train people how to learn during sleep.B To prove the existence of unconscious memory.C To dig out the reason for unconscious learning.D To study the effect of sleep learning on conscious learning.第二节(共1小题;每小题10分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.5. Every minute, every single day, about a truckload of plastic enters our oceans.(1)_______ And to date, only 9%of that has been recycled. We buy a bottle of water, drink it for a few minutes, and toss its permanent packaging"away".We eat potato chips, finish them, then throw their permanent packaging"away".We buy produce, take it out of the unnecessary plastic wrap, then throw its permanent packaging"away".The cycle is endless, and it happens countless times every single day.(2)_______ As far as we try to toss a piece of plastic﹣whether it's into a recycling bin or not﹣﹣it does not disappear.Chances are,it ends up polluting our communities, oceans or waterways in some form. For years,we've been told the problem of plastic packaging can be solved through batter individual action.(3)_______ But the truth is that we cannot recycle our way out of this mess.Recycling alone will never stop the flow of plastics into our oceans;we have to get to the source of the problem and slow down the production of all this plastic waste.Think about it:if your home was flooding because you had left the tap on,your first step wouldn't be to start mopping. You'd first cut the flooding off at its source﹣the tap.(4)_______We need corporations﹣those like Coca﹣Cola,Unilever,Starbucks and Neatlé that continue to produce throwaway plastic bottles﹣to step up and take their responsibility for the mess they've created.(5)_______.We will continue to do our part, but it's time for the world's largest corporations to do theirs.A.This is their problem to deal with.B.Plastic pollution is becoming very serious.C.But here is the problem﹣there is no"away".D.In many ways, our plastic problem is no different.E.We think that if we simply recycle we're doing our part.F.It's impossible for us to get rid of plastic pollution completely.G.Since the 1950s,some 8.3bn tons of plastic have been produced worldwide. 6. Some mosquitoes spread several serious diseases, including Dengue, yellow fever and malaria.Over one million people worldwide die from these diseases each year. New research now shows how mosquitoes choose who to bite.Mosquitoes need blood to survive. They are attracted to human skin and breath. They smell the carbon dioxide gas, which all mammals breathe out. This gas is the main way for mosquitoes to know that a warm-blooded creature is nearby. But mosquitoes also use their eyes and sense of touch. Michael Dickinson is a professor at the California Institute of Technology. His research shows how these small insects, with even smaller brains, use three senses to find a blood meal.Michael Dickinson’s tea m used plumes—a material that rises into the air of carbon dioxide gas into a wind tunnel. They then used cameras to record the mosquitoes. The insects followed the plume. Then, the scientists placed dark objects on the lighter colored floor and walls of the tunnel. Mr. Dickinson said,at first, the mosquitoes showed no interest in the objects at all. "What was quite striking and quite surprising is that the mosquitoes fly back and forth for hours. These are hungry females and they completely ignore the objects on the floor and wall of the tunnel. But the moment they get a hit of CO2,they change their behavior quite obviously and now would become attracted to these little visual blobs (斑点)."This suggested to the researchers that a mosquito’s sense of smel l is more important in the search for food. Once mosquitoes catch a smell of a human or animal, they also follow visual signals.4.What do mosquitoes mainly use to find their targets?1A.Sense of smell.B.Sense of touch.C.Sense of sight.D.Smart brains.5.The first response of the mosquitoes to the objects in the experiment is .A.to fly to the dark onesB.to catch and stick to themC.to take no notice of themD.to attach themselves to them6.How can we avoid being attacked by mosquitoes according to the text ?A.Don’t let them see us.e dark objects to stop them.C.Make them fly back and forth for hours.D.Attract them to objects full of carbon dioxide gas.7.What can be the best title for the text?A.How Do Mosquitoes Survive?B.Why Do Mosquitoes Need Blood?C.How Do Mosquitoes Choose to Bite You?D.Why Do Mosquitoes Attack the Human Being?CFilm director James Cameron first became interested in sea exploration when he was a little boy. His love for the ocean grew after he made the 1989 undersea adventure film The Abyss and the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, one of the most successful movies of all time. Following that big success,James Cameron decided to put his film career on hold to become an explorer. In 2012, James Cameron made a journey to the deepest spot in the Mariana Trench, known as Challenger Deep. And now the great journey has been made into a documentary(记录片)film, named James Cameron's Deep-sea Challenger 3-D.In James Cameron's fantasy films, such as Avatar and The Abyss, the unexplored areas are decorated in colours and full of danger. But on his dive into Challenger Deep, the reality proved far different: white, deserted and dull."I felt like I had gone to another planet," Cameron said after returning from the cold and dark place in the Western Pacific Ocean, nearly 7 miles below the surface. "I really have a sense of being separated and realize how tiny I am down in this big, black and unexplored place."Cameron captured(获取)the moon-like landscape of the deep sea and documented the sea creatures he observed in the ocean.James Cameron's Deep-sea Challenger 3-D tells the story of Cameron's journey. It is a film about determination, danger and the ocean's greatest depths. The movie shows a unique insight into Cameron's world when he makes his dream a reality and makes history by becoming the first person to travel alone to the deepest point on the planet. It's an exciting film and inspiring reminder that our beautiful planet still has a lot to explore.8. When did James Cameron become interested in the ocean?A. When he was in his childhood.B. After his films The Abyss and Titanic.C. After he achieved great success in movies.D. When he began to explore the deep sea alone.9. What is the unexplored ocean like?A. Colourful and dangerous.B. Boring and deserted.C. White and attractive.D. Small and dull.10. What can we know about James Cameron's Deep-sea Challenger 3-D?A. It is a film about the exploration of ocean creatures.B. It is a story about Cameron's film-making dream.C. It aims to attract more people to explore the deep sea.D. It tells us about James' journey into Challenger Deep.11. What is the best title for this passage?A. The Great Dream of a Film DirectorB. A film Director Exploring Deep SeaC. James Cameron and His Documentary FilmD. The First Person to Make Films About the Deep SeaD"People are ruder today because they are rushed and more ‘time poor’ than ever before," says Patsy Rowe, " Manners have fallen off the radar(雷达)." Due to our strong attraction to electronic equipment it is a wonder more people don’t wake up each morning and greet the singing birds with a complaint about the noise. Here are some examples of rudeness. Some people prefer to do almost everything over the internet. To them, dealing with an actual human is like an evolutionary step backward. It feels very slow because humans don’t work at 4G speeds. When you have dinner with friends, you will often notice someone paying more attention to his mobile phone. We have programmed ourselves to think that every new message brings life-changing news, so taking calls and checking our texts are more important than talking to the people we are with. What is worse, some people even tend to send anonymous(匿名的)rude messages by email. However, rudeness is never acceptable. Don’t assume it is OK to be rude if the person you’re in touch with won’t recognize you. If you have something awful to say, have the courage to face the person and say it, write a letter or email and sign it, or forget it. Upsetting people with unsigned messages is cruel and annoying. We shouldn’t blame technology for our shortcomings. Technology is here to help us, but we should not allow it to take over our lives. An important step is admitting our shortcomings. People spend a lot of time pointing out bad manners but it would be even more helpful if we’d publicly recognize good manners when we see them.12. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?A. People can tell good from bad behavior.B. Radar is able to observe human behavior.C. People care little about their behavior.D. Radar can be used to predict human behavior.213. Some people are less willing to deal with humans because________.A. they are becoming less patientB. they are growing too independentC. they have to handle many important messagesD. they have to follow an evolutionary step backward.14. The author thinks sending unsigned awful messages is ________.A. ridiculousB. hatefulC. acceptableD. reasonable15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. We should praise good behavior.B. Technology can never be blamed.C. We should keep pointing out mistakes.D. Technology will take over our lives one day.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
