精品例题1.In July 1994 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of comet彗星. When the fragments碎片landed in the southern part of the giant planet, the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet? The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the Earth. The news has caused panic. On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the Earth, but the north won’t escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosions. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for food.A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived. Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs恐龙were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn’t survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?Question 1:It can be concluded that the passage is most probably part of an ________.A.horror storyB.news reportC.research paperD.article of popular science2.The tower of Big Ben London’s most famous building, has always leaned 倾斜 slightly, but construction work on a new line for the London Underground seemed likely to give the tower a real lean. Engineers have had to prop up 支撑 its base to prevent it from damaging the rest of the Houses of Parliament. To control the tower’s movement, engineers pumped grout 水泥浆 into the soil under the tower. The tower now leans an extra few centimetres, but the lean can only be seen by the most sharp-eyed observer.Between 1995 and 1997, to lengthen the Jubilee line of the Underground, builders dug a 40-metre-deep hole just 31 metres north of the clock tower. And the new tube underground tunnels were even nearer to the tower. John Burland, who recently helped stop the increasing lean in the Leaning Tower of Pisa and was an adviser to the Jubilee line project, believed the work would affect the tower. In his opinion, no furtherlean should go beyond a safety limit of 27.5 millimetres over the existing lean of 220 millimetres. To keep the lean within this limit, Burland told the British Association about the new method of pumping grout immediately under the base of the tower. More than 300 tons of grout were pumped in during construction. The tower’s, additional lean went between 10 and 25 millimetres, but never passed 27.5 millimetres. After the construction work was completed in late 1997, a review of movements in nearby walls showed that the building was in better shape than had been thought before and the safety limit was raised to 35 millimetres before any action needs to be taken. Since 1997,the tower has continued to lean, Burland told Modern Construction. The latest measurements, taken this year, suggest that the tower’s lean had just reached 35 millimetres. But following regular re-examinations of the tower, experts are sure that the tower has stabilised 稳定. A spokesman for London Underground says: “We understand the tower has stabilised and returned to its normal movement cycle.”From Modern Construction, 16 September 2000Question 2:We can infer from the article that________.A.the tower of Big Ben with damage the Houses of ParliamentB.the Jubilee line should be stopped in Burland’s opinionC.the writer is blaming Burland for making a mistakeD.the propping up work has proved to be successful3.The use of the word imitation模仿reminds me that we ought to make some more comments on the risk of people imitating what they see on the screen in the way of crime犯罪or violence.First there was always a risk of children acting out scenes which could be dangerous. For example,I remember a woman who was head of a middle school telling me that she had happened to look out of her window when the children were in the playground and had seen them putting a small boy on a chair with a rope round his neck and the rope over the branch of a tree;fortunately she was in time to get there before the child was hung.I remember a film in particular in which the hero who was imprisoned had escaped by electrocuting通电触死his guard, the technique of doing this being shown in detail. This was the kind of scene which we could cut for these reasons. In films for young people and adults we always tried to keep off the screen any details of criminal techniques, such as how to open a locked door with a piece of hard plastic or how to open a safe;if we were consulted请教before production,I used to advise that the details should not be shown. When I gave talks in prisons about film checking I had full support for this ,since fathers who were in prison for criminal offences did not want their children to get on crime.Every time I gave a talk in a prison someone used to mention the French film Rififi made by Jules Dassin in 1954.This remarkable film showed in great detail a robbery of a jeweller’s shop, the robbery lasting about half an hour and being backed only by natural sound…one of the most brilliant film sequences连续镜头of all time.I remember our discussions at the time.We thought that the robbery was finished only with the use of advanced and obviously expensive equipment and that only the most experienced and skilled criminals could possible imitate it;we believed therefore that it was relatively safe. When talking in prisons some years later I learned thatthere had been several robberies in which the techniques had been copied,so perhaps we were wrong.Question 3:It can be inferred from the passage that________.A.it is hard for the children to tell the differences between real life and the imaginaryB.only the people in prison supported film checkingC.only children imitated what they had seen on the screenD.the writer used to advise the details of crime should be shown4.The next time you try for a high-ranking post, you could let your possible boss listen to a recommending推荐 phone call “made” by US President George W. The advances raise several problems. Who, for example, owns the rights to a famous person’s voice? Some experts even believe that new contracts合同will be drawn that include voice-licensing clauses. And although scientists say the technology is not yet good enough to commit fraud 假冒, would the synthesized合成的voices at last be able to trick people into thinking that they were getting phone calls or digital audio recordings from people they know? Even Mr Fruchterman, one of AT& T lab’s possible first customers, said he wondered what the new technology might bring. “Just like you can’t trust a photograph anymore.”he said, “you won’t be able to trust a voice either.”Question 4:According to the passage, you can infer that ________.A.the software will turn out to be an immediate success in the marketB.the government will forbid the sale of the software in the marketC.it’s hard to decide whether the software will enjoy popularityD.the software will soon prove to be nothing but rubbish高考实例1.Grossroads InternationalHow does Grossroads work?Crossroads is a resource network. which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil(麻油)hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as mutton and spinach(菠菜),are seen as“hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radish(樱桃萝卜),are seen as“cold”.One should be careful not to eat too much of either“hot”or“cold”food. However, how much“hot”or“cold”food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health. The custom of tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry.Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞),can be found on many restaurant menus, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as over-worked office staff,in need of a modest pick-me-up.So,whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup,or increase your mental powers with a serving of pig’s brain soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you are looking for.4.What is the present situation of tonic food?A.It is catching less attention.B.It is enjoyed by many young people.C.It is well-known worldwide.D.It is becoming increasingly popular.5.What is believed to benefit new mothers?A.Chinese cabbage.B.Fruit tea.C.Sesame oil hot pot.D.Pig’s brain soup.6.What does the underlined word“catering”mean in key when people feel lonely. The researchers interviewed32people aged59to83.Pets included dogs, cats, birds, etc.More than 90%of the people spoke about touch in the relationship with their pets.“Participants often described touch-based interactions with their pets as being comforting or relaxing in a way that contributed to their overall well-being,”the researchers say.“For our participants, comfort is the sense of being somehow cared for by another being.”Many people in the study spoke about how their pets just seemed to“know”when they weren’t feeling well and they’d move to get physically near them.Different pets were better at providing comfort, some participants insisted. Many said cats were more relaxing than dogs, while others said dogs could be relaxing as long as they were“the right kind of dog”.But almost all pets provided some sort of comfort to their owners when it came to touch.Janette Young, lecturer in health sciences at the University of South Australia, and her team uncovered an interesting thing about the pet-human relationship.People in the study often spoke about how their animals demanded to be petted or seemed to take joy in the interaction. This,in turn, made the humans feel good. The researchers suggest that pets can be“helpful in reducing touch deprivation(匮乏)”and the benefits can come from all kinds of pets. This connection can be particularly important in health care and senior care settings where patients and workers are less likely to be able to see friends and family;yet touch is important and can improve health and happiness.Pets can also offer benefits that in some cases people can’t offer.“Relationships with pets are different to those with humans,”Young says.“Animals don’t judge and are always with us.”8.About what did some participants hold different opinions?A.What pets were better at providing comfort.B.Whether pets could make them feel relaxed.C.How they felt when their pets touched them.D.When pets could notice their owners’discomfort.9.What did Janette Young find about the pet-human relationship?A.It is full of judgments.B.It turns out temporary.C.It benefits both parties.D.It is determined by pets.10.What may researchers suggest hospitals do?A.Encourage pet connection programmes.B.Raise pets to reduce human touch.C.Select the best pet companions.D.Order workers’friends to incredibly popular in many cities throughout China. While many cafes started out offering the company of cats and dogs, others are expanding their range. Some cafes include animals like squirrels, raccoons(浣熊)and even capybaras(水豚).Many Internet users have commented that their main reason for visiting these businesses is to interact closely with animals they have only seen from afar.“The customers love animals. They are curious about these pets and want to raise one at home but circumstances don’t allow it,”said pet cafe owner Tian Rui.Liu Jing,a Beijing resident who works in finance, loves pigs, but her parents would not endorse her getting one as a pet.The24-year-old had to admire the animals through videos and images. But now,she can have close contact with an adorable pig every weekend in a pet cafe. Also, these pet cafes serve as a shelter for those who find comfort in being around animals.“In this place, you can get close to the cute little ones in a very comfortable way without having to worry about safety and hygiene(卫生)—overall,it is an extremely comfortable experience,”said Zhao Ming from Tianjin,a frequent pet cafe visitor.Animal lovers also expect the pet cafes to change people’s attitudes towards pets.Animals like ducks, pigs and sheep have been served as food for many years.People hardly see them as pets. But the pet cafes help shift their attitude from seeing them as playthings to regarding them as family members or close friends.“Whether at home or in stores, these little animals are there for companionship and they bring warmth to our hearts. They care and understand just like family members. They give us much more than the love we give to them,”Zhao said.12.Why do people visit pet cafes?A.To pursue inner peace.B.To appreciate animal images.C.To experience a clean environment.D.To have close contact with animals.13.What does the underlined word“endorse”in paragraph4mean?A.Believe in.B.Approve of.C.Prevent.D.Suspect.14.We can started.16Researchers found that3milligrams(毫克)of caffeine per kilogram of body weight can raise the rate of fat burning during aerobic(有氧的)exercise.17The coffee dose was shown to increase maximal fat oxidation rate(脂肪氧化率)by an average of10.7percent in the morning and29percent in the afternoon. The recommendation to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning to increase fat oxidation is common.18It is still unknown whether this increase is due to exercising in the morning or due to going without food for a longer period of time.19Caffeine is often associated with improved athletic performance, though the science behind this link isn’t as comprehensive as it could be.In later cycling tests after the caffeine had been given,thefat-burning capability of the body was measured, showing the impact that caffeine had made on MFO. Maximum oxygen uptake was also raised,as was the intensity(强度)of exercise. The results of the study showed that acute caffeine intake30minutes before performing an aerobic exercise test increased MFO during exercise regardless of the time of day.20Overall,these results suggest that a combination of acute caffeine intake and exercise at moderate intensity in the afternoon provides the best solution for individuals seeking to increase whole-body fat oxidation during aerobic exercise.A.It is based on the results gathered from15male volunteers.B.However,this recommendation may lack a scientific basis.C.Evidence is mounting that morning exercise is good for your health.D.A new study suggests it can make a significant difference to fat burning.E.They are clear enough to suggest that there is some kind of association there.F.Researchers have found that if cyclists take more caffeine, they will ride much faster.G.Researchers were keen to look in detail at the relationship between caffeine and exercise.50分阅读限时满分练(五)【语篇导读】本文是一篇应用文。
阅读推断题【课堂精讲】推理判断题常见题干:*The writer implies but not directly states that _______.*It can be inferred from he passage that… is _______.*The author strongly suggests that _______.*It can be concluded from the passage that _______.*What do we learn about… from Paragraph X?*The study/research/example of… indicates that ______.一、细节推断题要求考生根据语篇关系,推断具体细节,如时间、地点、人物关系、人物身份、事件等。
一般可根据短文提供的信息,或者借助生活常识进行推理判定。

The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then theirerrors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together.” Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations many questions remain the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.32. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?A. The methods of estimation.B. The underlying logic of the effect.C. The causes of people’s errors.D. The design of Galton’s experiment.33. Navajas’ study found that the average accuracy could increase even if ________.A. the crowds were relatively smallB. there were occasional underestimatesC. individuals did not communicateD. estimates were not fully independent34. What did the follow-up study focus on?A. The size of the groups.B. The dominant members.C. The discussion process.D. The individual estimates.35. What is the author’s attitude toward Navajas’ studies?A. Unclear.B. Dismissive.C. Doubtful.D. Approving.【答案】32. B 33. D 34. C 35. D【解析】【导语】本文是说明文。
