Sitting there munching on dumplings and looking out over the sweeping vistas, I felt like I had been transported back in time. It was easy to imagine soldiers standing guard, scanning for threats from invaders streaming in from the northern steppes.After lunch, we visited one of the Wall's garrison stations where the ancient troops would have been housed. There were displays showing the rustic living conditions, cramped dormitory-style bunks, basic cooking facilities, and storage rooms for rations. My favorite was spotting the chubby prairie dogs that would pop out of their holes in the ground, give a couple high-pitched barks at us, and then disappear again. It was incredible to imagine this whole little city carved into the mountainside and servicing the Wall's defenses. As we wandered through the remains of watchtowers, gates, and living quarters, I tried to picture hundreds of soldiers preparing for battle, repairing the Wall, and standing on guard. This place must have been constantly buzzing with activity back in its prime.Alas, our Great Wall adventure had to end and it was time to load back onto the bus for the long journey home. My brain wasswimming with all the sights, facts, and experiences of the day. I couldn't wait to tell my parents all about this amazing field trip!As we pulled away, I turned and looked back at the majestic Great Wall disappearing from view behind the mountain peaks. I felt so fortunate to have walked along this incredible monument to human determination and persistence. Just keeping it defended and maintained over thousands of years must have been nearly as daunting as building it in the first place.The stamina, blood, and sacrifice that went into constructing the Great Wall suddenly gave me a profound appreciation for what our ancient ancestors were able to achieve against overwhelming odds.
