科学思创挑战活动英语演讲Science, Creativity and Challenge: My Experience in the ActivityHello, everyone! I'm here today to talk about my amazing experience in the science - creativity - challenge activity.Let me start from the very beginning. I have this friend, Jack. He's a total science geek. One day, he came running to me all excited, waving a flyer in his hand. "Hey," he said, his eyes shining like stars. "There's this super - cool science - creativity - challenge activity going on. We have to sign up!" I was a bit hesitant at first. I mean, I like science, but the idea of a challenge? It made me a bit nervous. But Jack, he just wouldn't take no for an answer. "Come on," he pleaded. "It'll be fun. We can build something amazing together."So, we signed up. When we got to the activity venue, it was like stepping into a whole new world. There were teams everywhere, all with their own ideas and plans. Some were building robots that could dance, and others were working on some kind of super - complicated water - purifying system. Jack and I, we decided to build a solar - powered fan. It seemed simple enough at first, but as we started working on it, we realized we had no idea what we were doing. We had all these parts in front of us: a solar panel, some wires, a motor, and a bunch of other little things. Jack started connecting the wires to the solar panel, muttering to himself. "This should go here, right?" Iwasn't so sure. "I don't think so," I said. "Maybe it goes to that part of the motor first." We argued back and forth for a while, getting a bit frustrated. But then, another team member, Lisa, came over. She had this calm look on her face. "Hey, guys," she said. "Why don't you look at the manual again?I think it has a diagram that shows how to connect these things."So, we grabbed the manual and started looking through it. Sure enough, there was a diagram. With Lisa's help, we finally got the wires connected correctly. But then, we faced another problem. The fan wasn't spinning as fast as we wanted it to. Jack scratched his head. "Maybe the solar panel isn't getting enough sunlight?" he suggested. We moved the whole setup around, trying to find the perfect spot for the solar panel. I was starting to feel a bit desperate. "This is never going to work," I moaned. But Lisa just laughed. "Don't be so negative," she said. "Let's check the motor. Maybe there's something wrong with it." We took apart the motor and found that one of the gears was a bit loose. We tightened it up and put everything back together. And then, when we placed the solar - powered fan back in the sunlight, it started spinning like crazy! We were so excited that we all jumped up and down, hugging each other. This science - creativity - challenge activity taught me a lot. It wasn't just about building a solar - powered fan. It was about working together, sharing ideas, and not giving up when things got tough. I learned thateveryone has their own strengths. Jack was great at coming up with ideas, Lisa was super - calm and good at finding solutions, and I learned to be more patient and not be so quick to give up.And you know what? I can't wait for the next science - creativity - challenge activity. Because now I know that with a little bit of creativity, a whole lot of teamwork, and the courage to face challenges, we can create something really amazing.中文翻译大家好!今天我要讲讲我在科学思创挑战活动中的超棒经历。

Is Science dangerous?Abstract:This article lists the benefits that scientific advancement bring to humanity . It also mentions the negative impact on scientific development . The case of genetically edited infants is a case to remind people of the devastating effects of unregulated scientific research .Today, we enjoy the benefits of advances in science and technology all the time. We have faster cars, high-speed rail, airplanes and broadband speed, and more advanced smartphones and robots. However, science is a double-edged sword. The cars facilitated our travel and caused many accidents. Nuclear energy can be used to generate electricity, and it can also make atomic bombs.Gene editing has helped us solve many of the problems that have been plagued in biology, but if used in the human body, it is dangerous.A Chinese scientist claims to have helped make the world’s first genome-edited babies - twin girls, who were born in November 2018.He impregnated a woman with embryos that had been edited to disable the genetic pathway HIV uses to infect cells[1].The claim prompted shock and outrage from scientists, who questioned He’s justification for carrying out a preliminary and potentially risky procedure in people, without an international scientific consensus about whether and how such an experiment should be conducted. Even He’s own university distanced itself from the results. Now, scientists are also raising the prospect of a chilling effect on gene editing[2].The scientist’s claims have not been verified through independent genome testing, nor published in a peer-reviewed journal. But, if true, the twins’ birth would represent a significant - and controversial - leap in the use of genome editing. Until now, the use of these tools in embryos has been limited to research, often to investigate the benefit of using the technology to eliminate disease-causing mutations from the human germline. But some studies have reported off-target effects, raising significant safety concerns.Documents posted on China’s clinical-trial registry show that He used the popular CRISPR–Cas9 genome-editing tool to disable a gene called CCR5, which encodes a protein that allows HIV to enter a cell.CCR5 encodes a protein that allows HIV to enter immune cells. Deleting part of the gene can disable it - mimicking a naturally occurring mutation, CCR5-Δ32, that confers resistance to HIV.More than 100 Chinese biomedical researchers have posted a strongly worded statement online condemning He’s claims. “Directly jumping into human experiments can only be described as crazy,” the statement reads. The scientists call on Chinese authorities to investigate the case and introduce strict regulations on this procedure.“This is a huge blow to the international reputation and the development of Chinese science, especially in the field of biomedical research,” the statement says. “It is extremely unfair to the large majority of diligent and conscientious scientists in China who are pursuing research and innovation while strictly adhering to ethical limits.”The scientist who edited the genomes of twin girls in an attempt to make them resistant to HIV might have inadvertently shortened their life expectancy. People with two disabled copies of the CCR5 gene — the version that protects against HIV infection — are 21% more likely to die before the age of 76 than are people with at least one working copy of the gene, according to a study1 published on 3 June in Nature Medicine. The reason for the discrepancy is unknown.Recent surveys suggest that the public supports genome editing in embryos if it fixes disease-causing mutations. In December 2017, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, a London-based independent advisory committee, published a survey of 319 people. Nearly 70% of those supported gene editing if it allowed infertile couples to have children, or if it allowed a couple to alter a disease-causing mutation in an embryo. A larger survey of 4,196 Chinese citizens, released last month, reported asimilar level of support for modifying genes if the goal is to avoid a disease. But respondents were opposed to using it to enhance IQ or athletic ability, or to change skin colour.Scientists and ethicists are still grappling with the implications of altering a person's genes in ways that can be passed on to future generations — something that had never been done before.Around the time of He’s announcement, evolutionary biologist April Wei of the University of California, Berkeley, was developing a computational tool to link genetic mutations with lifespan, using data from the UK Biobank. She and geneticist Rasmus Nielsen, also at Berkeley, decided to test the tool with CCR5. “It’s an interesting gene on its own,” We i says.To Wei, the study’s findings reinforce the idea that disabling the gene in human embryos is a bad idea. “I think it’s really hard to prove that a gene is unconditionally beneficial and that is something to think about,” she says. “Even if we resolv e the technical difficulties and ethical issues, could we really edit a gene if we don’t know if it might have a deleterious effect?”Another negative impact of the He Jiankui incident has already emerged when scientists and people are still arguing over whether genetic editing techniques should be used for humans.A Russian scientist says he is planning to produce gene-edited babies, an act that would make him only the second person known to have done this.Molecular biologist Denis Rebrikov has told Nature he is considering implanting gene-edited embryos into women, possibly before the end of the year if he can get approval by then[3].Rebrikov heads a genome-editing laboratory at Russia’s largest fertility clinic, the Kulakov National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology in Moscow and is a researcher at the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, also in Moscow.According to Rebrikov he already has an agreement with an HIV centre in the city to recruit women infected with HIV who want to take part in the experiment.Implanting gene-edited embryos is banned in many countries. Russia has a law that prohibits genetic engineering in most circumstances, but it is unclear whether orhow the rules would be enforced in relation to gene editing in an embryo. And Russia’s regulations on assisted reproduction do not explicitly refer to gene editing, according to a 2017 analysis of such regulations in a range of countries. (The law in China is also ambiguous: in 2003, the health ministry banned genetically modifying human embryos for reproduction but the ban carried no penalties and He’s legal status was and still is not clear).Rebrikov expects the health ministry to clarify the rules on the clinical use of gene-editing of embryos in the next nine months. Rebrikov says he feels a sense of urgency to help women with HIV, and is tempted to proceed with his experiments even before Russia hashes out regulations. Before any scientist attempts to implant gene-edited embryos into women there needs to be a transparent, open debate about the scientific feasibility and ethical permissibility, says geneticist George Daley at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, who also heard about Rebrikov’s plans from Nature. One reason that gene-edited embryos have created a huge global debate is that, if allowed to grow into babies, the edits can be passed on to future generations — afar-reaching intervention known as altering the germ line. Researchers agree that the technology might, one day, help to eliminate genetic diseases such as sickle-cell anaemia and cystic fibrosis, but much more testing is needed before it is used in the alteration of human beings. In the wake of He’s announcement, many scientists renewed calls for an international moratorium on germline editing. Although that has yet to happen, the World Health Organization, the US National Academy of Sciences, the UK’s Royal Society and other prominent organizations have all discussed how to stop unethical and dangerous uses — often defined as ones that pose unnecessary or excessive risk — of genome editing in humans. One big concern with He’s experiment — and with gene-editing in embryos more generally — is that CRISPR-Cas9 can cause unintended ‘off-target’ mutations away from the target gene, and that these could be dangerous if they, for instance, switched off a tumour-suppressor gene. But Rebrikov says that he is developing atechnique that can ensure that there are no ‘off-target’ mutations; he plans to post preliminary findings online within a month, possibly on bioRxiv or in a peer-reviewed journal.Rebrikov understands that if he proceeds with his experiment before Russia’s updated regulations are in place, he might be considered a second He Jiankui. But he says he would only do so if he’s sure of the safety of the procedure. “I think I’m crazy enough to do it,” he says.If Rebrikov's request is approved, human ethics will face enormous challenges. As one scientist said, human beings will eventually destroy their own mischief. We need science, in the control. If dangerous scientific research is not regulated, the world becomes very dangerous.Reference[1] Cyranoski D, Ledford H J N.
