④垂花门建在四合院的中轴线上，从外边看，像一座极为华丽的砖木结构门楼；从院内看，则似一座亭榭建筑的方形小屋。
垂花门的顶部多为卷棚式，门外部分的顶部为清水脊，而门内部分则是卷棚顶，两顶迹接搭在一起的交汇处形成了天沟，垂花门所承接的雨水有一半从天沟的两侧流出，大大减少了檐前的滴水，减少了雨水对垂花门阶石的侵蚀。
⑤垂花门还具有防卫和屏障功能，在垂花门向外一侧的两柱间安装着第一道门，这道门比较厚重，与街门相仿，名叫“棋盘门”，白天开启，供宅人通行，夜间关闭，有安全保卫作用。
