成人高等教育学士学位英语模拟试题及答案解析(2)(1~5/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. There is no doubt that adults, and even highly educated adults, vary greatly in the speed and efficiency of their reading. Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to regress. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading according to the type of reading matter and to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads. Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.A type of reading which necessitates careful attention to detail is proofreading, in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads as the exact shape and order of letters and words in the text. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, considerable practice is required to practice this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively little attention to the general meaning of the text.第1题The author claims that there is a difference in reading speed______.A.among readers who have different experienceB.among all the readersC.between the poorly educated and the highly educatedD.among the highly educated people第2题A good reader is a reader who______.A.concentrates on the wonderful part of the articleB.always reads slowly and carefullyC.changes his speed according to the kind of textD.changes his speed according to the interesting of the text第3题The author says that when reading a novel, a good reader can quickly read______.A.every part of the bookB.the most wonderful part in the bookC.the major part in the bookD.the scientific part of the book第4题The last two sentences of the first paragraph mean that______.A.a reading speed too slow for a difficult book is just right for a non-serious oneB.a reading speed too slow for a non-serious book may be too fast for a difficult oneC.A reading speed too fast for difficult material is just right for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult oneD.A reading speed too slow for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult one第5题Which of the following can be the tide of the passage?A.Reading and listening.B.Difference between highly educated and poorly educated.C.Practice reading skill.D.Difference in the speed and efficiency of reading.下一题(6~10/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Television has opened windows in everybody´s life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from allthe terrible things that have been shown on the screen.Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.Unfortunately, television´s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn´t do funny things like the people on children´s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That´s the time it takes on the screen.第6题In the past, many young people______.A.knew the effects of warB.went in for politicsC.liked to save the wounded in warsD.were willing to be soldiers第7题Now with TV people can______.A.discuss politics at an information centerB.show more interest in politicsC.make their own decisions on political affairsD.express their opinions freely第8题The author thinks that TV advertisements______.A.are not reliable on the wholeB.are useless to peopleC.are a good guide to adultsD.are very harmful to the young第9题Which is NOT true according to the passage?A.People have become used to crimes now.B.On a TV screen some problems can be solved quickly.C.People now like to read books with pictures.D.The adults are less violent than the young.第10题From the passage, we can conclude that______.A.children should keep away from TV programs should be improvedC.children´s books should have pictures has a deep influence on the young上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages, I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil, reading about other people´s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do notmake a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of born worlds.第11题According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be______.A.full of enthusiasmB.self-disciplinedC.full of ambitionD.knowledgeable第12题The first paragraph tells us that the author______.A.lost his hearing when he was a childB.didn´t like his brothers and sistersC.was born to a naturalist´s familyD.was interested in flowers and inserts in his childhood第13题The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he______.A.just reads about other people´s observations and discoverieses up with solutions in most natural waysC.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmeticcks some of the qualities required of scientist第14题The author can´t remember his relatives clearly because______.A.he was fully occupied with observing natureB.he didn´t live very long with themC.the family was extremely largeD.he was too young when he lived with them第15题Which of the following statement is true?A.The author believes that a born naturalist cannot be a scientist.B.The author´s brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.C.The author read a lot of books about the natural world and the oil industry.D.The author spent a lot of time working on riddles.上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. As the Titanic was sinking and women and children climbed into lifeboats, the musicians from the ship´s band stood and played. They died when the ship went down. Men stood on the deck and smoked cigarettes. They died, too. This behavior is puzzling to economists, who like to believe that people tend to act in their own self-interest. "There was no pushing," says DavidSavage, an economist at Queensland University in Australia who has studied witness reports from the survivors. It was "very, very orderly behavior.´´Savage has compared the behavior of the passengers on the Titanic with those on the Lusitania, another ship that also sank at about the same time. But when the Lusitania went down, the passengers panicked. There were a lot of similarities between these two events. These two ships were both luxury ones, they had a similar number of passengers and a similar number of survivors. The biggest difference, Savage concludes, was time. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes. But for the Titanic, it was two-and-a-half hours. "If you´ve got an event that lasts two-and-a-half hours, social order will take over and everybody will behave in a social manner,"Savage says. "If you´re going down in under 17 minutes, basically it´s instinctual." On the Titanic, social order ruled, and it was women and children first. On the Lusitania, instinct won out. The survivors were largely the people who could swim and get into the lifeboats.Yes, we´re self-interested, Savage says. But we´re also part of a society. Given time, social norms can beat our natural self-interest. A hundred years ago, women and children always went first. Men were stoic. On the Titanic, there was enough time for these norms to become forceful. 第16题According to the author, economists were confused because______.A.people´s behavior was disorderly on the TitanicB.people did not act in their own interest on the TitanicC.most men did not act in their own interest on the LusitaniaD.women and children could not climb into the lifeboats第17题The expression "won out" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to "______".A.took the upper handB.went out of controlC.ran wildD.shut down第18题According to David Savage, ______was a critical factor in determining people´s behavior in the sinking of these two ships.A.social orderB.placeC.instinctD.time第19题According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.Both ships were expensive ones.B.A similar number of women and children from both ships survived.C.About the same number of people from each ship died.D.Both ships had a similar number of passengers.第20题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Why Didn´t Musicians Play on the Lusitania?B.Why Did Musicians Play on the Titanic?C.Why Didn´t Passengers Panic on the Titanic?D.Why Did Men Smoke on the Titanic?上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. 河北省成人本科英语模拟试卷2(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. For any Englishman there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist. Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the works of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of English - speaking people. Most of the time we fire probably unaware of the source of the words we use, rather like the old lady who taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well - known proverbs and quotations! Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English, Shakespeare in his works used about twenty - five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort(it is not, of course, recommended to beginners), even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.1.English people______.A.have never discussed who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist B.never discuss the world’s greatest poets and dramatistsC.are sure who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatistD.do not care who is the world’ s greatest poet and greatest dramatist正确答案:C解析:事实细节题。

RTCA,an organization which advises the aviation(航空)industry, has recommended that all airlines ban such devices from being used during“critical”stages of flight, particularly takeoff and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights.Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during takeoff and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft’s computers. Experts know that portable devices emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But,because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio system in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though,is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music’s too loud.11.The passage is mainly about_______.A.a new regulation for all airlinesB.the defects of electronic devicesC.a possible cause of aircraft crashesD.effective safety measures for air flight12.What is said about the over100aircraft incidents in the past15years?A.They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.B.They may have taken place during takeoff and landing.C.They were proved to have been caused by the passengers’portable computers.D.They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.13.Few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because _______.A.they don’t believe there is such a danger as radio interferenceB.the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be provedC.most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette playersD.they have other effective safety measures to fall back on14.Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplane’s computers?A.Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.B.Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.C.Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.D.Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.15.It can be inferred from the passage that the author_______.A.is in favor of prohibiting passengers’use of electronic devices completelyB.has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interferenceC.hasn’t formed his own opinion on this problemD.regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flightPassage2Even plants can run a fever, especially when they’re under attack by insects or disease. But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from3,000feet away straight up.A decade ago, adapting the infrared(红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest problems.Even better,Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye.Mounted on a plane flown at3,000feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running“fevers”.Farmers could then spot-spray, using50to70percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in1984,after only three years.Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning,Paley hopes to get back into operation.Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works.“This technique can be used on75percent of agricultural land in the United States,”says George, expert of Texas A&M.Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain10years ago.16.Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are_______.A.sprayed with pesticidesB.facing an infrared scannerC.in poor physical conditionD.exposed to excessive sun rays17.In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely,we can use infrared scanning to_______.A.estimate the damage to the cropsB.measure the size of the affected areaC.draw a color-coded mapD.locate the problem area18.Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by_______.A.resorting to spot-sprayingB.consulting infrared scanning expertsC.transforming poisoned rainD.detecting crop problems at an early stage19.The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties, such as_______.A.the lack of official supportB.its high costC.the lack of financial backingD.its failure to help increase production20.Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of_______.A.the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produceB.growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides on cropsC.the forceful promotion by the Department of AgricultureD.full support from agricultural expertsPassage3The human brain contains10thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections.Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with humanlike ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace,we can be less sure.Quite soon,in only10or20years perhaps,we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will.It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon(硅)will arise first to rival and then exceed their human ancestors.Once they exceed us,they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves.Silicon will have ended carbon’s long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale,we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to withstand environments, harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined.Further ahead,by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast,man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.21.In what way can we make a machine intelligent?A.By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.B.By working hard for10or20years.C.By either properly programming it or changing its structure.D.By reproducing it.22.What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability?A.He believes they will be useful to human beings.B.He believes that they will control us in the future.C.He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.D.He doesn’t consider the construction of such machines possible.23.The word carbon(para.2)stands for“_______”.A.intelligent robotsB.a chemical elementC.an organic substanceD.human beings24.A robot can be used to expand our frontiers when_______.A.its intelligence and cost are beyond questionB.it is able to bear the rough environmentC.it is made as complex as the human brainD.its architecture is different from that of the present ones25.It can be inferred from the passage that_______.A.after the installation of a great number of cells and connections, robots will be capable of self-reproductionB.with the rapid development of technology, people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like abilityC.once we make a machine as complex as the human brain,it will possess intelligenceD.robots will have control of the vast,man-made world in spacePassage4Cancer is feared by everyone. And this fear is reaching epidemic proportions. Not the disease itself-there is no such thing as a cancer epidemic.Except for lung cancer, mostly caused by cigarette smoking, the incidence rates are leveling off,and in the case of some kinds of cancer are decreasing. But the fear of cancer is catching, and the country stands at risk of an anxiety. The earth itself is coming to seem like a huge carcinogen(致癌物).The ordinary, more or less scientific statement that something between80and90percent of all cancers are due to things in the environment is taken to mean that none of us will be safe until the whole environment is “cleaned up.”This is not at all the meaning.The80-percent calculation is based on the unthinkable differences in the incidence of cancer in various societies around the world-for example, the high proportion of liver cancer in Africa and the Far East, stomach cancer in Japan, breast cancer in Western Europe and North America, and the relatively low figures for breast cancer in Japan and parts of Africa and for liver cancer inAmerica. These data indicate there may be special and specific environmental influences, largely based on personal life-style,that determine the incidence of various forms of cancer in different communities-but that is all the data suggest. The overall incidence of cancer, counting up all the cases,is probable roughly the same everywhere.26.Which of the following is closest to meaning to the phrase“leveling off”?A.Became very popular.B.Reached its lowest level in popularity.C.Stopped being popular.D.Stopped increasing its popularity.27.According to the passage, the incidence of cancer is generally believed_______.A.to be based on inactive life styleB.to be due to anxietyC.to result from environmental influencesD.to be caused by heavy smoking28.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer’s opinion about the relationship between cancer and environment is_______.A.positiveB.negativeC.neutralD.approving29.According to the passage, the writer seems to feel that_______.A.cancer risk is on the riseB.the whole earth resembles a huge carcinogenC.the risk of catching cancer is not so great as most people conceiveD.cancer can be cured sooner or later30.Which of the following would be the best TITLE for the passage?A.Cancer and EnvironmentB.The Fear It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music without moving their body or, more spe-cifically, some part of their body. Often when one listens to a symphonic concert on the radio, he is attracted to direct the orchestra (乐队) even though he knows there is a good conductor on the job.Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all pos-sible enjoyment from music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener "feels" himself into the music with more or less noticeable motions of his body. The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process of thinking in the same way, but this participation is less obvious because it is less noticeable.SSS_SINGLE_SEL16.Some psychologists think that thinking is __________.A not a mental processB more of a physical process than a mental actionC a process that involves our entire bodiesD a process that involves the muscles as well as the brain该题您未回答:х该问题分值: 2答案:D事实细节题。

Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Passage OneAmericans this year will swallow 15, 000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man. As the most popular medicine in the world today, itis an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap. Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(片剂) were available in the United States. For millions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing that works.A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. On the other hand, it is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has sideeffects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users.Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.16. This article discusses __________.A. the multiple functions of aspirinB. how and why aspirin was inventedC. the history and the features of aspirinD. how to take aspirin properly17. According to the second paragraph, salicylates is __________.A. leaves and tree barksB. the old name of aspirinC. the name of a US companyD. a component of aspirin18. Which symptom can NOT be treated by aspirin?A. feverB. reactionsC. painD. inflammation19. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the best way to take aspirin is to take it __________.A. with bitter waterB. with orange juiceC. in tablet formD. in powder form20. The author of this article seems to be__________.A. against the use of aspirinB. in favour of aspirinC. doubtful about aspirinD. not interested in aspirinPassage TwoDr. Mary Jo Bane is the associate director of the Center for Research on Women. Herrecent study found “surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life”, which cast doubt on some common myths about American family. Myth 1: The American Family is Dying Because of the Soaring Divorce Rate.According to Dr. Bane’s study, the American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller and the divorce rate is high. But Dr. Bane says that despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people re-marry, but only 2%marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.Myth 2: Working Mothers are Destroying the Family by Neglecting Their Children. “There’s no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home,” says Dr. Bane.“You have to divide the time into different categories: simple physical function and educational time or development time when a mother plays with the child. So far we haven’t seen the amount of educational or development time vary much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.” In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence that working mothers, especially in the middle class, try to compensate for working by setting aside time exclusively for their children. “They probably read more to their children and spend more time in planned activities with them than nonworking mothers do.” says Dr. Bane.21. Dr. Mary Jo Bane’s study seems to suggest that _________.A. Americans are persistent in careerB. Americans are serious with their familiesC. American families are all breaking upD. American families are perfect as usual22. It can be inferred that the commonmyths of American family consider family life to be _________.A. in great dangerB. quite wonderfulC. changing too fastD. very satisfying23. According to the article, which of the following is true about marriage and divorce?A. Divorced people never consider a second marriage.B. Teenage couples often divorce out of no reason.C. Less and less people plan to get married.D. Very few people have a third or fourth marriage.24. For the children whose mothers go out to work, __________.A. it is better to have mothers at homeB. almost no attention is paid to themC. no less attention is paid to themD. a lot of time is spent playing gamespared with nonworking mothers, working mothers________.A. spare less time to stay with their childrenB. do more educational activities with childrenC. do very little simple physical houseworkD. avoid disturbing their work by family dutiesPassage ThreeCrime has its own cycles, a magazine reported some years ago. Police records that were studied for five years from over 2,400 cities and towns show a surprising link between changes in the season and crime patterns in UK.The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p. m. and 6 a. m.Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, burglary has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p. m. and 2 a. m. on a Saturday night in December, January or February. The most uncriminal month of all is May; however, more dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.On the other hand, our intellectual seasonal cycles are completely different from our criminal tendencies. Professor Huntington, of the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings, make the highest scores on examinations, and propose the most changes to patents. In all instances, he found a spring peak and an autumn peak separated by a summer low. On the other hand, Professor Huntington's studies indicated that June is the peak month for suicides and admissions to mental hospitals. June is also a peak month for marriages!26. The seasonal cycle of crime patterns is proved by_________.A. the figures in police recordsB. 2,400 cities and townsC. a magazine reportD. the studies by police officers27. According to paragraph 2, a murder would most possibly occur on _________.A. a weekday morning in springB. a weekday morning in autumnC. a weekend night in summerD. a weekend night in winter28. What makes May a special month of the year?A. All types of crimes happen in May.B. There is no crime happened in May.C. Criminals increase in number in May.D. Dog attacks are most frequent in May.29. Which behavior is NOT an example of human intellectual activities?A. Reading books on philosophy.B. Attending wedding ceremony.C. Working on mathematics questions.D. Innovating engineering machinery.30. According to Professor Huntington’s study, June is the peak month when people _________.A. get divorcedB. recover from mental illnessC. try to kill themselvesD. climb high and low mountainsPassage FourIn Lusaka, Zambia, a young man applying for a job was told to see the manager. He leaned over the receptionist’s desk and asked. “What tribe(部落)is he?” When the receptionist told him that the manager was a Mashona, the applicant replied, “Then I'll never get the job.”This phenomenon is called tribalism(部落主义). There are more than 2,000 tribes in black Africa. Each has its own language, customs, and physical characteristics thatmake its members almost immediately recognizable to a person from another tribe. To the Westerner, tribalism is one of the most difficult of African customs to understand. It makes many people think of savagery, warfare, or old-fashioned customs. However, to most Africans, tribalism simply means very strong loyalty to one’s ethnic group. It is a force that can be both good and bad. By definition tribalism means sharing among members of the extended family. It makes sure that a person is taken care of by his own group tribesman. To give a job to a fellow is not wrong; it is an obligation. Similarly, for a politician or military leader, it is considered good common sense to choose his closest advisers from people of his own tribe. This ensures security, continuity, and authority. Tribal loyalty may mean a quick promotion—from sergeant to captain, from clerk to manager—within a very short time. Modern African politicians publicly speakout against tribal divisions. Yet it remains perhaps the most powerful force in day-to-day African life.31. In paragraph 1, why did the young man believe his job application will be refused?A. His behavior was not appropriate.B. He belonged to the same tribe with the manager.C. He didn’t belong to the same tribe with the manager.D. His questions annoyed the receptionist.32. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he willever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.21. According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that _______.A. life for a child is comparatively easyB. a child is always loved whatever he doesC. if much is given to a child, he must do something in returnD. only children are interested in life22. After a child grows up, he_____.A. will have little time playingB. has to be successful in finding a jobC. can still ask for help in time of troubleD. should be able to take care of himself23. The main idea of the passage is that ______.A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some painsB. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hardC. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s lifeD. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life25. The paragraph following the passage will most probably discuss ______.A. examples of successful young menB. how to build up one’s position in societyC. joys and pains of old peopleD. what to do when one has problems in lifePassage 2Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (曲解) one. Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in, or living in a county and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be true from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different after all!Differences between peoples do of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, andsome people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of animal from themselves.26. Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they are _______.A. distortedB. normalC. similar to each otherD. different from its own27. One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will ______.A. find out what its people are likeB. argue in favor of this country and the languageC. know the country and its people betterD. like its inhabitants and their language28. The knowledge one gains by traveling in a foreign county is often _______.A. from second-hand informationB. gathered from other sources than from its inhabitantsC. gained from the arguments about the countryD. different from what one had before the travel29. Differences between peoples ________.A. will gradually disappear because of ease of travelB. do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alikeC. will always continue to exist and the world will be a dull placeD. will not exist as one hopes30. The underlined word “However” most probably means _________.A. somewhatB. by whatever meansC. anyhowD. no matter whatPassage 3We arranged that Kissinger would fly to Vietnam for talks early in July and then stop in Pakistan on the way back. There he would develop a stomachache that would require him to stay in bed and not be seen by the press. Then, with President Yahya’s coope ration he would be taken to an airport where a Pakistan plane would fly him over the mountains to China.Kissinger’s trip was given the code(密码) name Polo after Marco Polo, another Western traveler who made history by journeying to China. Everything went without a hitch. His slight illness in Islamabad received only minor attention from reporters covering him. They accepted the story that he would be confined to bed for at least a couple of days and began making arrangements for their own entertainment.Because of the need for complete secrecy and the lack of any direct communication facilities between Beijing and Washington, I knew that we would have no word from Kissinger while he was in China. Even after he had returned to Pakistan it would still be important to maintain secrecy. So before Kissinger left, we agreed on a single code word —Eureka -which he would use if his mission were successful. On July 11, Al Haig, who knew our code word, phoned me to say that a cable from Kissinger had arrived.“What’s the message?” I asked.“Eureka,” he replied.31. The reporters in Islamabad believed that ______.A. Kissinger was not feeling wellB. Kissinger had just come back from VietnamC. Kissinger had put off leaving for ChinaD. Kissinger was preparing to entertain them33. The statement “everything went without a hitch” (Para.2) most probably means that ______.A. nothing was easy with the missionB. the plans were carried out with great difficultyC. things went smoothlyD. there was no possibility of success34. There was no news from Kissinger while he was in Beijing, chiefly because _______.A. his trip had to be kept secretB. President Yahya did not go with KissingerC. communication between Beijing and Islamabad was difficultD. the negotiation(谈判) was not successful35. The passage implies that Kissinger’s message “Eureka” was sent _______.A. when the negotiation started in BeijingB. as soon as he arrived in WashingtonC. when he flew to Vietnam on July 11D. when the negotiation was completed in Beijing Passage 4No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the U.S.A. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 144 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Distinguished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over thecountry. However the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational”, which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with television.Just as American newspapers give way to all tastes, so do they also try and apply to readers for all political persuasions. A few newspapers support extremist (过激分子) groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers attempt to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are essentially moderate. Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views in order to present a balanced picture. As in other democratic countries American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the fears of the Vietnam War.36. There are fewer national newspapers in ______.A. Britain than in the U.S.A.B. France than in BritainC. the U.S.A. than in Britain or FranceD. France than in the U.S.A. or Britain37. Most American newspapers try to entertain their readers because ______.A. they have to keep up a good relation with themB. they have to compete with televisionC. they have to write about crime, sex and rumorD. they have to give factual news in an interesting way38. Many American newspapers attract readers of different political tendency by ______.A. supporting extremist groups from time to timeB. inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for themC. avoiding carrying articles about extremistsD. printing articles representing different political viewpoints39. In this passage the underlined word “press” (Para.2) means ______.A. a machine for printingB. the business of printingC. great forceD. newspapers40. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than jobholders. (51) An investigation shows that whenever the unemployment rate increases by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point, work is helpful to health. Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. (52)Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man andreality. (53)By work people come into contact with each other. By collective activity they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him ill.(54 )Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.(55)From the above we can come to the conclusion that the more you work the happier and healthier you will be. Her comeback comes 32 years after she won three golds at the Munich Olympics.Schipper, now a 17-year-old from Brisbane with a bright future of going to Athens for her first Olympics, yesterday recalled her time with Gould five years ago."I was at a national youth camp on the Gold Coast and Shane had come along to talk to us and watch us train," Schipper explained. "It seemed as if we had long been good friends. I don't know why. We just started talking and it went from there.""She had a lot to share with all of us at that camp. She told us stories about what it was like at big meets like the Olympics and what it was like to be on an Australian team. It was really interesting."Next time, things will be more serious. "I will still be swimming in the 50m butterfly at the nationals, so there is a chance that I could actually be competing against Shane Gould," said Schipper, who burst onto the scene at last year's national championships with second places in the 100m and 200m butterfly.16.What is the passage mainly about?A.Stories happening in swimming competitions.B.Two women swimmers winning Olympic golds.C.Lessons learned from international swimming championships.D.Friendship and competition between two swimmers.17.Gould and Schipper are going to —A. talk about sport and lifeB. go back to elite competitionC. set a qualifying time and win goldD. take part in the same sports event18.Gould won her three Olympic golds when she wasA. 15B. 17C. 22D. 3019.The underlined word "it" in the fifth paragraph probably refers toA. the OlympicsB. the youth campC. the friendshipD. the Australian team20.What Schipper said showed that she —A.was no longer Gould's friendB.had learned a lot from GouldC.was not interested in Gould's storiesD.would not like to compete against GouldPassage TwoThat cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week from now on, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sa&looking homeless people under blankets.About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull upto the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? the door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. "Is this what you're looking for?n he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 am by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.I've seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. "I don't know what to do with him these days," she said. "He's forgotten all the manners we taught him."He hasn't forgotten them. He's just decided that he's not going to use them. She confessed that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, "I don't like your dress; it's ugly." One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home."Where did we go wrong?" her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. However, most zoos remain "collections" of interesting "things" rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural zones.Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals* natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species* names, diets, and natural ranges. The animals* normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don* t usually take care of the animals* natural needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental andphysical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven't we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals* natural habitats.31.How would the author describe the animals* life in zoos?A. Dangerous.B. Unhappy.C. Natural.D. Easy.32.In the state of zoochosis, animalsA. remain in cagesB. behave strangelyC. attack other animalsD. enjoy moving around33.What does the author try to argue in the passage?A.Zoos are not worth the public support.B.Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.C.Zoos should treat animals as human beings.D.Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.34.The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by —A.pointing out the faults in what zoos doing evidence he has collected at zoosC.questioning the way animals are protectedD.discussing the advantages of natural habitats35.Although he argues against zoos, the author would still agree that —A.zoos have to keep animals in small cagesB.most animals in zoos are endangered speciesC.some endangered animals are reproduced in zoosD.it's acceptable to keep animals away from their habitatsPart III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Youshould decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition (学会) of eachnew skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading andwriting. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. Ababy might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is leftalone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life andhis desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may beespecially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and thevalues of the community as much as the child's own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is veryimportant in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundationfor morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they havebeen to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their moralscan be a dangerous disappointment.11. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ________.A) parents should be strict with their childrenB) parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC) parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD) parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation14. The word “precept”(Line 3, Para. 3) probably means “________”.A) idea B) punishmentD) instructionC) behavior15. In moral matters, parents should ________.A) observe the rules themselvesB) be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC) forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD) consistently ensure the security of their childrenPassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. These days we take for granted the wide variety of music available on the radio. But, thiswasn't always the case. In the early days of radio, stations were capable of broadcasting only anarrow range of sounds, which was all right for the human voice but music didn't sound very good. There was also a great deal of crackling and other static noises that further interfered with thequality of the sound.A man named Edwin Armstrong, who was a music lover, set out to change this. He inventedFM radio, a technology that allowed stations to send a broad range of frequencies that greatly improved the quality of the music. Now, you'd think that this would have made him a millionaire; it didn't. Radio stations at that time had invested enormous amounts of money in the old technology. So the last thing they wanted was to invest millions more in the new technology. Nor did they want to have to compete with other radio stations that had a superior sound and could put them out of business. So they pressured the Federal Communications Commission —the department of the United States government that regulates radio stations —to put restrictive regulations on FM radio. The result was that its use was limited to a very small area around New England. Of courseas we all know, Edwin Armstrong's FM technology eventually prevailed and was adopted by thousands of stations round the world. But this took years of court battles and he never saw how it 3模拟试题二came to affect the lives of almost everyone.16. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details.“As our tests became more complex,”sums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins”He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at many jobs-until they got complicated. "I will still be swimming in the 50m butterfly at the nationals, so there is a chance that I could actually be competing against Shane Gould," said Schipper, who burst onto the scene at last year's national championships with second places in the 100m and 200m butterfly.16. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 am by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.21. Sheconfessed that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from thesofa onto the floor.Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, "I don't like your dress; it's ugly." However, most zoos remain "collections'' of interesting "things" rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animalsbored, lonely, and far from their natural zones.Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals' natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species' names, diets, and natural ranges. The animals' normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don' t usually take care of the animals' natural needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals' natural habitats.31. How would the author describe the animals' life in zoos?A. Dangerous.B. Unhappy.C. Natural.D. Easy.32. In the state of zoochosis, animalsA. remain in cagesB. behave strangelyC. attack other animalsD. enjoy moving around33. What does the author try to argue in the passage?A. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by __A. pointing out the faults in what zoos doB. using evidence he has collected at zoosC. questioning the way animals are protectedD. discussing the advantages of natural habitats35. Although he argues against zoos, the author would still agree that __A. zoos have to keep animals in small cagesB. most animals in zoos are endangered speciesC. some endangered animals are reproduced in zoosD. it's acceptable to keep animals away from their habitatsPart III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this section.
