In the lecture, the person suggested that assembling a team to work on a project may not be as rosy as the reading passage suggests.
First, there are free-riders in virtually every team. They do not work as hard as other team members do on the project. But they will take any credit that the project gets, leading team members who have contributed a lot to the teamwork to have negative attitudes toward the result. This argument contradicts the point made in the passage that team members usually feel more honored to work in a group setting because it will enable them to reach more far-reaching impact.
Second, working in a team will inevitably be quite inefficient. It takes long time for team members to reach consensus since every team member usually has very different opinions and it takes time for them to reach agreements. This point refutes the wider range of knowledge and greater resources that team members bring in will help them make decisions more quickly.
Third, the reading passage states that because of the diversified backgrounds of team members and the large-scope of different resources they have access to, group work usually helps team members finalize more creative solutions. However, based on the listening material, this is not necessarily true. In a team, there are usually 2-3 very influential members, whose opinions always dominate group thinking. If they think certain plans do not work, the group may drop those plans immediately without any further discussion. The same thing happens when those dominant members highly appreciate some plans that may actually not work out. Moreover, even if a plan does not finally work, the whole group will be blamed rather than those influential team members. In this way, the spread of responsibility does not lead to more creative results as stated in the reading passage but stifles creativity.。
