AFrom December 1st, 2023 to November 30th, 2024, visitors can stay in China for up to 15 days without a visa. Below are several easy steps for planning a first China tour.Decide How Many Days to StayWe suggest you take at least a week for your first trip to see the highlights in the top three cities: Beijing (3–4 days), Xi’an (2 days), and Shanghai (1–2 days). To discover more of China, like charming Guilin and lovely Chengdu pandas, you would need a few more days.Consider When to Travel to ChinaThings to do in Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai are seldom affected by the seasons.Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are generally the most comfortable and recommended times for a China tour. They are neither too hot nor too cold, but fall is generally drier and warmer than spring.A more ideal travel time for you could be March and early April or September when there are smaller crowds, favorable prices, and still good weather.China is a good summer holiday destination too.Consider Your BudgetThe biggest cost could be international airfares. The cost of airfares from the US or Europe to China varies a lot depending on when you fly and which airline you use, from around US$1,200 to US$3,000 for an economy round trip. The biggest price difference between the off and peak seasons is in the price of hotels and airfares. Prices in peak seasons can go up by 50 to 100%.For a private tour, the average cost per day is about US$220–350 per person, including flights/trains within China, 4- or 5-star hotels, lunches, attractions, guides, and private transport. We Believe Private and Tailor-Made Tours Are BestWith our private tours, you would have much more personal choice in how your tour goes. You could have more hand-picked and interactive experiences, like visiting a local family with your own local guide. With private guiding and transport, we would make full use of your time. You could focus on the sightseeing you want to do, skipping what’s not of interest and the long queues in the most crowded attractions.21. After applying for more than two dozen teaching jobs, I hadn’t landed a single interview.I had once considered going to art school but had put that idea to the side when I decided to pursue chemistry as an undergraduate. In the years that followed, I kept up my interest in art by taking painting classes at night. My family was bursting with mathematicians, computer programmers, and engineers, so it felt natural to have my daily life center around science. But in the spring after my failed job search, that started to change after a friend excitedly showed me proofs of a review article. She was astonished by what the journal’s scientific illustrator had done with her fundamental sketches(速写). “That would be such a fun job.” I thought.I decided to test out a new career direction by volunteering to create similar illustrations for my institute’s newsletters. I spent my nights and weekends reading scientific papers and thinking about how to illustrate the results. It was a fun task. I felt I was perhaps on the right path. But could I make a full-time career?Searching online, I tracked down people who had that kind of job. I found many had training through scientific illustration master’s degree programs. After living on graduate student and postdoctoral salaries for years, I didn’t have enough money saved up for the programs, so I decided to get a certificate in digital design.I now work as a visual designer at a biomedical research institute where I spend my days working with research to communicate their work visually. I love the fact that I get to combine my scientific and artistic sides.24. Why did the author attend classes at night?A. To please her family.B. To pass her undergraduate tests.C. Her busy schedule.B. Her financial difficulties.C. Her new interest in digital design.D. Her lack of confidence.27. How does the author feel about her current job?A. Pressured.B. Desperate.C. Curious.D. Satisfied.CAdministrators of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu province, are striving to harmonize tourists’ exploration of the site with the need to safeguard murals and artifacts, through innovative measures such as digital presentations.Sandstorms, rainfall and tourist visits constitute the most severe threats to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, said Wang Xiaowei, director of the Dunhuang Grottoes Monitoring Center at the Dunhuang Academy.Since the Mogao Caves opened to the public in 1979, the number of visitors has been growing at an average annual rate of around 20 percent, reaching 2.15 million in 2019 before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thisyear, the site is expected to receive a record 3 million visitors.“If you enter the caves during the peak tourism months of July, August and September, you’ll find it hard to breathe,” Wang said. The carbon dioxide and moisture exhaled by visitors accumulate inside the caves and cause damage to the murals, Wang said.To preserve the caves, the duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms. To try and ensure visitors aren’t disappointed when restrictions are in place, the center provides a digital exhibition, he said.Currently, the center is being expanded to cater for an additional 3,000 visitors on top of the existing capacity of 6,000.The Dunhuang Academy began digitally recording and storing images of murals and painted sculptures over 30 years ago. The digitization project has successfully covered over 200 caves, with a dedicated team of 110 experts currently undertaking the work. The Mogao Caves are immovable, and transporting them is impossible, according to Su Bomin, head of the Dunhuang Academy. And he added, “However, with digitization, we can perfectly replicate Dunhuang art and showcase it worldwide, introducing Eastern culture to the world.”In 2016, the Digital Dunhuang repository went live, sharing high-definition images and panoramic tours of the most exquisite 30 caves globally. Currently, visitors from 78 countries have accessed the repository, totaling over 16.8 million visits.Su said Dunhuang can provide diverse cultural exchanges through its cultural relics. “By digitizing these relics, we enable people worldwide to understand Dunhuang’s culture, thereby gaining a deeper appreciation for China’s historical commitment to diverse cultural exchanges — that is, an ethos of inclusivity, mutual learning and a shared future,” he said.28. Which of the following is NOT the reason for providing a digital exhibition?A. The factors related to COVID-19 put the caves in grave danger.B. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves.C. The authority is aimed to balance tourism and relics conservation.D. The duration of visits is limited and sometimes stopped during rain or dust storms.29. What does the underlined word “replicate” probably mean?A. Copy.B. Safeguard.C. Access.D. Transport.30. What does Su Bomin think of digitization?A. It records and stores images of murals and painted sculptures.B. It shares high definition and panoramic tours of the most exquisite caves.C. It allows for an international exchange of cultures through the relics.D. It enables people to appreciate the lasting beauty of the murals.31. What can be the best title for the text?A. The Significance of the Mural PaintingsB. The Restoration in Mogao CavesC. The Innovation on Mogao Caves’ PreservationD. The Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese CultureDThe road to Mars is long and fraught with peril. One challenge is getting humans to the red planet; another is ensuring that once they’ve arrived, they’ll be able to manage life there. To prepare astronauts for an extended stay on Mars, NASA’s latest simulated mission, CHAPEA — Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog — will isolate four people inside a mock-Mars base in Texas for 378 days — roughly the time a manned mission to Mars would spend on the surface.Once inside they will adopt a pre-planned schedule taking part in simulated activities and science work, eating like astronauts, and dealing with maintenance and equipment failures, while undergoing strenuous psychological and physiological testing. The first simulation will begin in June, and will be followed by two more, each with a different crew in identical conditions, with the last simulation starting in 2026.“We’ve built a high-accuracy Mars surface mission scenario,” says Scott M. Smith, co-investigator for CHAPEA. The participants will experience a 22-minute delay in external communications, as astronauts would on Mars. Ambient noise will be played through speakers around the base, ensuring no outside sounds can be heard by participants.Aiming for accuracy has resulted in a habitat that could be feasibly built on Mars, Smith adds. The base, called “Mars Dune Alpha”, is a custom design by Bjarke Ingels Group and 3D-printing company ICON, and resides inside a hangar at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Printed in a month from ICON’s concrete formula dubbed “Lavacrete”, on Mars, the idea is to build using Martian soil.“NASA has evaluated a tremendous number of options for off-world habitat construction — repurposed rockets and landers, inflatables, assembled buildings, etc.,” explains ICON CEO Jason Ballard. “They’ve come to believe what we believe: that when you evaluate it from a financial, safety and flexibility standpoint, robotic construction using local materials is far and away the best option.”32. What’s the purpose of NASA’s latest simulated mission?A. To get astronauts to Mars.B. To isolate four people inside a base in Mars.C. To help astronauts to do experiments in Mars.D. To prepare astronauts for managing life in Mars.33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The last simulation will end in 2026.B. Each stimulation has a different crew in the same conditions.C. The participants can hear outside sounds.D. The participants will do things different from those that astronauts do.34. What’s Smith’s attitude to the simulated mission?A. Indifferent.B. Pessimistic.C. Optimistic.D. Skeptical.35. What is the most commonly used technique in the text?A. Making comparison.B.

But his study came to a stop at 23 after he hurt his hand in an unpleasant event. He developed schizophrenia(精神分裂症) later and spent many years without a home.Carter liked to spend time around UT, because he dreamt of being able to continue his study in the university and becoming a writer. After running into Carter many times, UT student Ryan Chandler decided to interview him for a project for the Daily Texan, the student newspaper of UT.“I interviewed him on Austin’s homeless problems. After I heard his story, we kept in touch and really became friends. I learned he wanted to get back to UT, so I decided to help him,” said Chandler. “He had got 87 hours, very close to a degree. Now, with changing degree requirements, he only has 64 hours to go.”With the help of Chandler, who worked with the university office, Carter was assigned an adviser by UT’s College of Fine Arts. “It' s the greatest gift I’ve ever received,” Ca rter said. “He did what had to be done to get me back to school, and I couldn't have done it without him”After seeing a magazine article about Carter, a UT schoolmate decided to pay his tuition fees (学费)without telling Chandler his name.Doug Dempster, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said in a statement, “David Carter's decision to complete his degree is a testament (证明) to finishing well what was started, and stopped, even many years earlier. Believe it or not, that decision could make a world of difference in the rest of your day.About 85 percent of Americans use an alarm clock to wake up in the mornings, according to sleep researcher Till Roennenber. And while there are no official numbers on snoozing (打盹), a quick survey of social media makes it clear that hitting the snooze button is a popular pastime. As to how the snooze button will affect your day, scientists have mixed opinions. Some scientists think people who hit the snooze button in the mornings are actually clever, creative and happy while some said that hitting the snooze button will ruin your life, or at the very least your day. "I feel that hitting the snooze button has got to be one of the worst things that ever happened to human sleep,” researcher Jonathan Horowitz said. "The chances of you ‘snoozing’ and actually experiencing a meaningful rest are close to zero.”According to some sleep experts, when hitting the snooze button, you are in fact confusing your body and mind, and throwing yourself into a deep state of being sleepy. The body needs some time to wake up, so, when returning to what will be a light sleep for a brief period of time, you are putting your body back into a sleep mode before waking it again. At that point your body won’t know what it wants, resulting in a sort of half awaken state. If you really want to take advantage of an alarm clock, the key is to form a healthy sleep cycle. Focus your efforts on getting enough sleep each night and waking up at the same time each day so that when your alarm goes off you feel rested.8. What can we infer about hitting the snooze button from Paragraph 2?A. People do it just for fun.B. It is a common practice.C. People take it seriously.D. It is a bit childish.9. What do some sleep experts think of hitting the snooze button?A. It is meaningful in the long term.B. It makes people become lazy.C. It brings us a sense of satisfaction.D. It affects our body and mind.10. What’s the author’s suggestion on getting the best out of alarms?A. Forming a good sleep habit.B. Trying to relax ourselves.C. Making use of willpower.D. Using an extra alarm.11. What is the best title for the text?A. Ways to keep refreshed in the morning.B. The snooze button and people's character.C. Should you rely on the snooze button?D. How to avoid the light sleep mode?DA storm hit Houston, Texas, on Tuesday. It brought heavy rains and rising flood-waters. By Tuesday night, some parts of the city had received 10 inches of rain. "Today should be our quietest over the next few days for rainfall,” sai d Don Oettinger, a National Weather Service meteorologist (气象学家).Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peia warned, “As there is too much water on the ground, these are perfect conditions for flash floods, so we hope people are careful of what they’re doing and e ncourage them to stay home. AI used to be crazy about the hunting season. The excitement of waiting for a prey(猎物) and the pride of showing off the kill fascinated me. However, everything changed after that cold morning.Early on that day of the late fall, I set off alone for the woods, packing a gun, a bottle of hot coffee and three thick sandwiches. After fi nding the fresh deer’s tracks in the snow, I settled down behind a little bush.I sat there for about an hour. It was then that I saw him. A deer, a big beautiful deer! There was no cover nearer to him than 30 yards. Surely I couldn’t miss! I waited for hi m to realize I was there. I waited for him to be shocked and run away. But he fooled me completely. He came to towards me! He was curious, I suppose, or maybe he was stupid - how else can you explain it?He was not quite young, but a deer in his prime. He must have known about men and guns. But he came closer, putting one foot before the other, slowly and purposefully. His big eyes never moved from my face. Well, that deer walked right up to where I was sitting. Then he stopped and looked at me!What happen ed next is hard to believe, but it’s true. And it all seemed quite natural. Just as when a friendly young deer comes near you, I reached up and scratched his head. And he liked to be scratched. In fact, he practically asked for more. Then, I fed him my sandwich! Yes, I know what a deer eats, but that deer ate my sandwich. Well, he finally went his way, down the hill and up the deer trail. Shoot him? Not me. You wouldn’t have either, not after that. I just watched him go.When I was about half way back, I heard two shots, followed by a dull slam(撞击) a few seconds later. Those two shots usually mean a kill. I had forgotten there were other hunters that day. Those hunters would never know they could have scratched his head.21.Why didn’t the author kill the deer?A. He was fooled by the tricky deer.B. He preferred to shoot a shy deer.C. He was too shocked to shoot the deer.D. He was touched by the deer’s closeness.22.What most probably happened to the deer in the end?A. It was taken home by the author.B. It managed to escape being shot.C. It was shot to death by someone else.D. It formed a friendship with another hunter.23.What’s the best title of this text?A.Why is man so cruel?B.Why did I quit hunting?C.How can we protect deer?D.When will man stop hunting?BWe love the sea. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine living under the sea. But we’re terrified of it, too. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail. The sea has a habit of taking back its own. And we suffer.Johnston, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” —the marine version of the “green engineering” moveme nt on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.We are expanding further into the marine environment. This practice does harm to marine ecosystems. We’re loving the sea to death, but we’v e not been thinking about design of structures (建筑物) with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night contuse species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.Throughout the world people are starting to turn things around. Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles (瓦片) similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbors around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life. It’s a far cry from the days when huge number of old tyres were thrown, into the sea to build “artificial reef” (人工礁石). Those clumsy early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.24. What do we know about “hard engineering”?A. It can control the influence of sea.B. It has improved sea environment.C. It forces sea creatures to settle down.D. It has not achieved its original purpose.25. Paragraph 3 focuses on the ______ of “blue engineering”.A. disadvantagesB. definitionC. necessityD. measures26. Which of the following belongs to “blue engineering”?A. Designing structures using sea creatures.B. Expanding further into the marine environment.C. Building homes for sea creatures with plant life.D. Creating an artificial reef off shore with old tyres.CResearchers around the world interested in uncovering complex human disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, could soon have access to cloned monkeys with genomes that have been edited to display these conditions in China. On 24 January, scientists at the Institute of Neuroscience (ION) in Shanghai reported that they had used gene-editing to disable a gene in monkeys that is crucial to their sleep-wake cycle. The scientists then cloned one of those monkeys to produce five primates(灵长目动物) with almost identical(相同的) genes. It is the first time that researchers have cloned a gene-edited monkey.Primates are the best animal model for studying higher cognitive(认知的) functions and brain disorders in humans, says neuroscientist Mu-ming Poo, ION's director and co-founder of the new 720 million yuan (US$106 million) centre. The advantage of creating cloned monkeys is that it reduces the number of animals needed for certain types of experiments, such as testing whether a drug works. But some scientists think that experiments using monkeys should be a last approach because of their higher levels of cognition. Mitchell Lazar, who studies metabolic disease at the University of Pennsylvania, says that some experiments in mice—for example, research into the genes behind human diseases—are equally appropriate scientifically as in primates. Research in mice is also more accepted by the public, and the animals are cheaper and quicker to produce. Lazar worries that if scientists have ready access to populations of gene-edited monkeys, they might use them for experiments when rodents(啮齿动物) would do.Poo says that mice are not a good substitute for studying higher cognitive functions and brain disorders in humans. He argues that cloning will reduce the burden on monkeys by cutting the number used in labs. The ION follows strict international guidelines for animal research, he says.Poo's team will continue to study the effect of gene editing on their five cloned monkeys. The group disabled a gene, BMAL1, that has a crucial role in maintaining circadian rhythm(生理节奏), the internal clock that helps a healthy sleep-wake cycle. In people, BMAL1 mutations have been linked to diabetes, hypertension and depression. The monkeys with the disabled BMAL1 genes move more at night and sleep less overall. They also display psychosis-related symptoms, such as fear and anxiety, when put in unfamiliar environments. The team's next step is to look in detail at the neural(神经的) mechanisms that might create these problems. It will also take advantage of the genetically identical monkeys to hunt for diagnostic markers ofcircadian rhythm-related disorders and possible treatments.27. Why did scientists clone the genetically identical monkeys?A. To display scientists' progress in cloning animals.B. To study the rare characteristics of cloned monkeys.C. To provide better models for studying human diseases.D. To explore the possible functions for monkeys' cognition.28. What does Mitchell Lazar think of cloning monkeys?A. It is hardly acceptable.B. It is against the law.C. It is of social significance.D. It is of much benefit.29. From the passage we can know that Poo's team will ________.A. continue to disable a gene on the monkeysB. clone more monkeys and edit their genesC. identify the cause of sleep disorders and seek curesD. find the similarities between humans and monkeys30. What's the main idea of the passage?A. Chinese dream to clone monkeys has finally come true.B. Chinese effort to clone gene-edited monkeys kicks off.C. Cloning gene-edited monkeys has caused some moral risks.D. Cloning has helped scientists find the cause of some diseases.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并涂在答题卡上,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Ask people how they are and the answer usually is “super busy,” “crazy busy”. 21 is just “fine” any more. When people aren’t super busy at22 , they are crazy busy exercising, entertaining or parenting. And if there is ever a still moment for thoughts—for example, while waiting 23 at the supermarket or sitting in traffic—out come the mobile phones. So it’s worth noting a study published last month in Science, which shows how 24 people will go to avoid the examination for our thoughts.“We had noted that we are so dependent on our mobile phones that people seem to find any 25 they can to keep busy,” said Timothy Wilson, a psychology professor at the University of Virginia. In his experiments involving 700 people, the majority found it 26 to be alone with their thoughts for just 6 to 15 minutes. It could be because human beings, as problem solvers and meaning makers, when 27 , tend to think about what’s wrong in their lives. When we aren’t28 our Facebook page, the things we haven’t figured out appear in our minds—29 relationships, professional failures, health concerns, etc. Unless there is a solution, these thoughts just 30 themselves in our heads. But you can’t solve problems 31 you don’t allow yourself time to think about them. It has actually been 32 by our culture, which values doing more than thinking and believes answers are in your hand 33 in your head. “We all fell that busyness is 34 but it’s really harmful,” said Timothy.“There’s a widespread belief that thinking will only slow you down and get 35 , but it’s theopposite.” 36 negative feelings only makes them more powerful, he said. Allowing and 37 the flow of thoughts is part of the solution itself, such as meditation(冥想).Ne gative feelings are sometimes hard, but they are part of everyone’s life, 38 if you are busy. Although we were all tied to lines running along the steel girders, a fellow climber called Mike had somehow managed to drop onto bended knee and turn to face his girlfriend, Wendy. I knew what was coming. “Wendy, will you marry me?” he asked. There was a quick smile and an attempted kiss and then a big beam. Mike had the answer he hoped for and all of us burst into a round of applause.Apparently more than 2,000 couples have become engaged ( 订婚) at the summit since 1998, when it became possible to climb it in organized tour groups. The bridge, perhaps the most recognized symbol of this beautiful city, opened in 1932. It's still the world's largest steel-arch bridge. We returned to the fantastic view: the famous Sydney Opera House, ferries and sailboats making their way through the harbor, the city skyline — but I had to force myself to look down. We had climbed 1,423 steps to the top of the bridge and I didn't know whether to be delighted or scared.Nicole Kidman has done it. So have Bruce Springsteen, Prince Harry and scores of other celebrities. But climbing to the top clearly isn't just for the rich and famous. On the contrary, Australian youngsters do it to celebrate their 12th birthdays. (You have to be at least 12 years old to do the climb.) A 100-year-old woman climbed it and told guides it was on her list of things to do before she died. You can climb during the day, at twilight, or even after dark with headlamps. People climb in all weathers except when there's lightning in the area. In fact, over two million people have made the three-and-a-half-hour climb to the top of the famous bridge—an adventure that cannot be done anywhere else in the world on a bridge this big. That's probably why this climb has won a lot of tourism awards. Today, the climb is firmly on the "to-do" list for locals as well as tourists.43.What can we learn on the bridge is quite rare.A.Getting engaged on the bridge is quite rare.B.People climb the bridge on climbers’ age.C.There are no limitations on climbers’ age.D.Many famous people have done the climb.44.How did the author feel when he climbed to the top of the bridge?A.Bored and tiredB. Fearful and confusedC. Excited and nervousD. Relived and relaxed45.What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A.To introduce the popularity of the bridge.B.To emphasize the importance of the bridgeC.To explain the functions of the bridge.D.To describe the fantastic view from the bridge.C"Our coffee is loved by millions worldwide." Do you often see this kind of advertising in your country? Statements like these that no one can prove are called puffery. Puffery is legal, even though it cannot be proved. In fact, puffery has been called "a license to lie", as it is regarded as an opinion rather than an objective statement.Using puffery to raise awareness of products and to increase sales, is a common advertising method. Some people, however, worry about puffery. One of the concerns is whether consumers are misled by false advertising. Therefore, advertisements containing puffery sometimes can be tested in the courts, and the decisions that are made help to tell the difference between acceptable puffery and illegal advertising. On the one hand, if a company tells the public that it sells the country's best-loved" or favorite product, this is thought to be puffery, rather than an objective description of market share. Similarly, the companydoes not have to produce proof that such puffery is actually supported by numbers or facts. In other words, advertisements such as the world's best cup of coffee" are impossible to prove. They are too good to be true and thus it is expected that any consumer will understand how subjective they are. Such advertisements are therefore not thought of as misleading. In fact, puffery like this in these advertisements is often considered to add to the entertainment value. On the other hand, a company that states their products is the safest" or cheapest" needs to show proof, because statements that are objective need to be supported by proof or statistics. Consumer rights organizations can run tests to examine whether or not such statements agree with the fact. Companies should thus be very careful when making factual statements about a product.A primary function of advertising is to create product awareness. As consumers, we need to know -about competing products, so we can make wise decisions on which one to buy. While it is important that advertisers are monitored to ensure they do not mislead consumers, it can be argued that puffery is a good way of raising awareness of new products. As long as there are effective ways of monitoring advertisements to prevent deliberate deception (欺骗) in safety and quality, it seems that most puffery is relatively harmless. Rather, it has become part of advertising, which most consumers can laugh at rather than being misled.46.By “ Our coffee is loved by millions worldwide", t he passage intends to .A. describe a factB. introduce the topicC. present an argumentD. provide background information47.The function of puffery is mainly to help .A. describe products' market shareB. raise awareness of new productsC. test the advertisement in the courtsD. run tests to examine the new products.48.What does the author think of puffery?A.It is acceptable with effective monitoring.B.It is misleading for it uses the false information.C.It is harmful for it plays tricks on consumers.D.It is convincing for it helps consumers to choose wisely.49.Which can be the best title of this passage?A. Functions of AdvertisingB. Puffery in AdvertisingC Consumers and Advertising D. The Art of AdvertisingDDear Mummy,This last trip to India with you has brought home to me a few hard facts- facts that I wanted to avoid seeing for some time. As you well know, you and I have had a few arguments and several days of tension during the trip. I must admit sometimes I really do not know how to communicate to you what I really feel. Words seem to fail on both sides. That's why I am writing this letter. Perhaps it will be a bit easier. ①As I approach my seventeenth year, I suddenly ask myself where I belong.1 know this is the usual teenage identity crisis. You came to this country when you were slightly older than I am and married my father. You admired the American lifestyle and tried to be an American as much as you could. I am the daughter of you, a mother who is Indian, and a father who is American. Of course, I am American. Except for a few trips to India I have little to do with India outwardly. But I feel how much you would like me to become Indian sometimes. I cannot explain it with examples. But I feel it in my bones. The India that you never quite shake off comes back to you now and you want to see your daughter live it, at least partly. ②Yes, Mummy, I know I am wrapped up in many superficial (肤浅的) things, things my friends indulge in (沉迷于) and I can understand your need to protect me. But I am part of them and in order for me to be acceptedby my friends, sometimes I need to do things which do not always please me either. I need their approval and I want to be like them sometimes. But your good intentions to teach me those good Indian things then clash. Although I dislike the superficiality of my friends, I cannot move back to your culture just because it is better for you or more ancient or deep. ③My dearest mother, I cannot be protected by you. Forgive me if I remind you of something you related to me many times. You could not be protected by my grandparents (your parents) when you decided to embrace this culture along with my father. ④ Nor can you protect me despite the fact that we are not separated by physical distance. Perhaps we are separated by something else and I suspect that is India.I have never written a letter like this before in my short life. I feel good about writing this and would like to hear what you have to say, Ma, perhaps you and I can still be friends in a way that you and your mother could not be. Let’s try. I love you.Yours,Rita50.What can we learn from this letter?A.Rita and her mother had a pleasant trip in India.B.Rita always asks herself where she belongs.C.Rita wants to be accepted by her friends.D.Rita's mother allows her freedom to do as she wishes.51.This sentence “Let me live the life I am surrounded by and suffer as I wish.” canbe best placed at .A.①B. ②C.③D.④52.The underlined word“clash in Paragraph 2 probably meansA. come into existenceB. come into disagreementC. come into viewD. come into effect53.Which words can best describe Rita's personality?A.
