在美国文化和图书分类中，虚构文学与非虚构文学是两种主要的类型，虚构文学主要指小说" 戏剧、诗歌等，非虚构文学则是纪实文学、散文、传记、调查报告等。

1966年美国新闻记者杜鲁门•卡波特《冷血》被视为非虚构文学的发端，作品凭借对新闻背后故事的深入发掘，参与到美国社会 60年代的自我反思、批判之中。
