Six of us chose trumpet lessons and the rest of the class chose the guitar, the flute or the piano. First, our trumpet teacher showed us how to unpack our instruments. My trumpet was silver and shiny and I was in love with it straight away. There were only three buttons to push, so I knew I would be playing tunes soon.I was wrong. No matter how much I blew, I couldn’t get a sound out of it. The other students managed to make a noise, but my trump et stayed silent. “There must be something wrong with it,” I said. But the teacherjust laughed. “Blowing a trumpet is like making a rude noise,” he said. Then he showed us how to roll our lips and make them vibrate. It sounded easy, and everyone in the group could do it except me.That night, Dad asked me about my trumpet lesson. “Terrible,” I said. “I just can’t get it to make a sound, so I’m going to ask the teacher if I can change to the guitar.” Dad said I had to keep trying because he had paid a lot of money to hire the trumpet.By the end of the second lesson I still couldn’t make a single noise with my trumpet.
