Mike proved(证明) he was 21 in his first year at college. In 2007, 22 he was a student at

the University of Illinois, he came up with an idea to 23 his tuition fee(学费) and college cost

problems. Mike thought everyone could afford to give him a penny(美分).

He wrote to Chicago Tribune writer Bob Greene. Mike wanted each of the newspaper’s 24 to

send him a penny. Bob thought the idea sounded 25 and agreed to do it.

―Just one penny.‖ Mike said. ―A penny doesn’t mean 26 to anyone. If everyone who is reading

your paper looks around the room right now, there will be a 27 under a seat, on the corner of the desk or on the floor. That’s all I’m asking. A penny from each of your readers.‖

In less than a month, Mike got around 2.3 million pennies. Not everyone sent only a penny, many even

sent dollars. Money was 28 from every state in the USA. So Mike reached his $28,000 target(目标)

and went on to get 29 for further study at the University of Illinois.

His father Bill said, ―When Mike first told me about his 30 , I just laughed and said that I thought

it was foolish—which shows that he’s smarter than I am.‖
