My Biggest Hero: Yuan Longping

Hi, my name is Xiaoming and I'm going to tell you about the

person I admire the most in the whole wide world. His name is

Yuan Longping and he's a really super amazing scientist from

China!

Yuan Longping was born in 1930 in a small village in Hunan

Province. When he was young, his family didn't have a lot of

money and they had to work very hard on their little farm to

grow rice and other crops. Life was tough back then, especially

during World War 2 when there wasn't always enough food to

eat.

Even as a little kid though, Yuan Longping was crazy about

science and plants. He loved watching things grow and figuring

out how they worked. His dream was to become a scientist and

help feed people by boosting crop yields.

After finishing school, Yuan Longping went to university to

study agriculture and plant breeding. He worked like a maniac, studying day and night. In 1964, he got a job as a researcher at

the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center. This is where his life's

work really began.

You see, regular rice plants can only self-pollinate and

produce a limited number of grains. But Yuan Longping had this

totally genius idea - what if you could crossbreed different

varieties of rice and get hybrid strains that were way more

productive? Kind of like how hybrid tomatoes or corn work.

For over 20 years, Yuan Longping tried over 10,000 different

crossbreeding experiments with rice! He failed again and again

but he never gave up. His coworkers thought he was nuts and a

lot of people made fun of his "crazy dream" of hybrid rice. But

Yuan Longping kept on going because he believed in his work so

much.

Finally, in 1973, he had a breakthrough! Yuan Longping

successfully bred the world's first hybrid rice strain that could

produce way more grains per plant than regular rice. This was

one of the biggest agricultural inventions ever and it was

happening right here in China!

The hybrid rice looked great in the lab, but would it work on

real farms? Yuan Longping took his hybrid seeds to poor areas

across China and had farmers try planting them. And you know what? The yields were simply incredible - many times higher than

regular rice! Farmers could now grow way more food on the

same amount of land.

Word spread like wildfire about Yuan Longping's super rice

and soon hybrid strains were being grown all across China and

then other countries too. By 2004, over half of China's rice crops

were Yuan's hybrid varieties! It's estimated that his work helped

provide food for an extra 80 million people per year. Can you

imagine that?

Even today at over 90 years old, Yuan Longping is still at it,

continuing to push the limits of hybrid rice yields. He's kind of

like the Michael Jordan of agriculture with all his passion, drive

and crazy records. Some people call him the "Father of Hybrid

Rice" but I just think of him as the Scientist Who Never Gave Up.

Yuan Longping had to overcome so much adversity, poverty,

war, criticism and failure to bring his revolutionary idea to life.

But through incredible hard work, brilliance and perseverance

against all odds, he fundamentally changed how one of the

world's most important foods is grown. He won the World Food

Prize and is considered one of the greatest humanitarian

scientists ever. To me though, Yuan Longping is a hero for simpler reasons.

No matter how long it took or what challenges he faced, he

stayed laser-focused on trying to create something amazing that

could truly benefit humanity. He never stopped believing in

himself and his dreams, even when everybody else thought he

was nuts.

Through Yuan's work, countless people have had more than

enough to eat. Kids who might have gone hungry instead got to

grow up healthy, go to school and have a real shot at life. That

right there is the most heroic thing I can imagine.

Yuan Longping's brilliant mind, persistence and kind heart

are things I really admire. He reminds me to never give up on my

biggest goals, to stay curious, work super hard and always try to

make the world a little bit better. I dream of one day becoming a

scientist too and maybe even changing the world myself, just like

my biggest hero Yuan Longping!
