起初是对国外理论的引进和借鉴，1998年中山大学夏纪梅、孔宪辉发表的《“难题教学法”和“任务型教学法”的理论依据及模式比较》，标志着任务型教学法走上了发展的轨道[2]。

之后研究逐渐扩大，开始了理论和实践相结合的阶段，吴旭东针对任务型外语教学的核心概念提出了难易度确定原则[3]。
