系列讲座之二——如何攻克四六级考试阅读理解@屠屠老师一、考研阅读与四六级阅读的区别二、四六级阅读如何复习三、四六级阅读的解题方法Passage OneQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Age has its privileges in America, and one of the more prominent of them is the senior citizen discount. Anyone who has reached a certain age—in some case as low as 55—is automatically entitled to a dazzling array of price reductions at nearly every level of commercial life. Eligibility is determined not by one’s need but by the date on one’s birth certificate. Practically unheard of a generation ago, the discounts have become a routine part of many businesses——as common as color televisions in motel rooms and free coffee on airlines.People with gray hair often are given the discounts without even asking for them; yet, millions of Americans above age 60 are healthy and solvent(有支付能力的). Business that would never dare offer discounts to college students or anyone under 30 freely offer them to older Americans. The practice is acceptable because of the widespread belief that “elderly”and “needy”are synonymous(同义的). Perhaps that once was true, but today elderly Americans as a group have a lower poverty rate than the rest of the population. To be sure, there is economic diversity within the elderly, and many older Americans are poor. But most of them aren’t.It is impossible to determine the impact of the discounts on individual companies. For many firms, they are a stimulus to revenue. But in other cases the discounts are given at the expense, directly or indirectly, of younger Americans. Moreover, they are a direct irritant in what some politicians and scholars see as a coming conflict between the generations.Generational tensions are being fueled by continuing debate over Social Security benefits, which mostly involves a transfer of resources from the young to the old. Employment is another sore point. Buoyed(支持)by laws and court decisions, more and more older Americans are declining the retirement dinner in favor of staying on the job—thereby lessening employment and promotion opportunities for younger workers.Far from a kind of charity they once were, senior citizen discounts have become a formidable economic privilege to a group with millions of members who don’t need them.It no longer makes sense to treat the elderly as a single group whose economic needs deserve priority over those of others. Senior citizen discounts only enhance the myth that older people can’t take care of themselves and need special treatment; and they threaten the creation of a new myth, that the elderly are ungrateful and taking for themselves at the expense of children and other age groups. Senior citizen discounts are the essence of the very thing older Americans are fighting against—discrimination by age.26. We learn from the first paragraph that ________.[A]senior citizens have to show their birth certificates to get a discount[B]giving senior citizens discounts has boosted the market for the elderly[C]senior citizen discounts have enabled many old people to live in a decent life[D]offering senior citizens discounts has become routine commercial practice27. What assumption lies behind the practice of senior citizen discounts?[A]The elderly, being financially underprivileged, need humane help from society.[B]Businesses, having made a lot of profits, should do something for society in return.[C]Old people are entitled to special treatment for the contribution they made to society.[D]Senior citizen discounts can make up for the inadequacy of the Social Security system.28. According to some politicians and scholars, senior citizen discounts will ________.[A]have adverse financial impact on business companies[B]bring a marked increase in the companies’ revenues[C]make old people even more dependent on society[D]intensify conflicts between the young and the old29. How does the author view the Social Security system?[A]It encourages elderly people to retire in time.[B]It benefits the old at the expense of the young.[C]It should be reinforced by laws and court decisions.[D]It opens up broad career prospects for young people.30. Which of the following best summarizes the author’s main argument?[A]Priority should be given to the economic needs of senior citizens.[B]Senior citizens should fight hard against age discrimination.[C]The elderly are selfish and taking senior discounts for granted.[D]Senior citizen discounts may well be a type of age discrimination.Passage TwoQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. You are in trouble if you have to buy your own brand-name prescription drugs. Over the past decade, prices leaped by more than double the inflation rate. Treatments for chronic conditions can easily top $2,000 a month—no wonder that one in four Americans can’t afford to fill their prescriptions. The solution? A hearty chorus of “O Canada.”North of the border, where price controls reign, those same brand-name drugs cost 50% to 80% less. The Canadian option is fast becoming a political wake-up call. “If our neighbors can buy drugs at reasonable prices, why can’t we?”And—the propagandists’ trump card(王牌)—“Wreck our brilliant health-care system.”Supersize drug practice, they claim, fund the research that sparks the next generation of wonder drugs. No sky-high drug price today, no cure for cancer tomorrow. So shut up and pay up.Common sense tells you that’s a false alternative. The reward for finding, say, a cancer cure is so huge that no one’s going to hang it up. Nevertheless, if Canada-level pricing came to the United States, the industry’s profit margins would drop and the pace of new-drug development would slow. Here lies the American dilemma. Who is all this splendid medicine for? Should our health-care system continue its drive toward the best of the best, even though rising numbers of patients can’t afford it? Or should we direct our wealth toward letting everyone in on today’s level of care? Measured by saved lives, the latter is almost certainly the better course. To defend their profits, the drug companies have warned Canadian wholesalers and pharmacies(药房)not to sell to Americans by mail, and are cutting back supplies to those who dare.Meanwhile, the administration is playing the fear card. Officials from the Food and Drug Administration will argue that Canadian drugs might be fake, mishandled, or even a potential threat to life.Do bad drugs fly around the Internet? Sure—and the more we look, the more we’ll find. But I haven’t heard of any raging epidemics among the hundreds of thousands of people buying cross-border.Most users of prescription drugs don’t worry about costs a lot. They’re sheltered by employee insurance, owing just a $20 co-pay. The financial blows rain, instead, on the uninsured, especially the chronically ill who need expensive drugs to live. This group will still include middle-income seniors on Medicare, who’ll have to dig deeply into their pockets before getting much from the new drug benefit that starts in 2006.31. What is said about the consequence of the rocketing drug prices in the US?[A]The inflation rate been more than doubled over the years.[B]A quarter of Americans can’t afford to see a doctor when they fall ill.[C]Many Americans can’t afford to see a doctor when they fall ill.[D]Many Americans have to go to Canada to get medical treatment.32. It can be inferred that America can follow the Canadian model and curb its soaring drug prices by_____.[A]importing low-price prescription drugs from Canada[B]extending medical insurance to all its citizens[C]exercising prices control on brand-name drugs[D]encouraging people to buy prescription drugs online33. How do propagandists argue for the US drug pricing policy?[A]Low prices will bring about the anger of drug manufactures.[B]High prices are essential to funding research on new drugs.[C]Low prices will affect the quality of medicines in American.[D]High-price drugs are indispensable in curing chronic disease.34. What should be the priority of American’s health-care system according to the author?[A]To allow the vast majority to enjoy its benefits.[B]To quicken the pace of new drug research.[C]To maintain America’s lead in the drug industry.[D]To solve the dilemma in the health-care system.35. What are American drug companies doing to protect their high profits?[A]Attributing the raging epidemics to the ineffectiveness of Canadian drugs.[B]Labeling drugs bought from Canada as being fakes.[C]Threatening to cut back funding for new drug research.[D]Reducing supplies to uncooperative Canadian pharmacies.。

Try to find out whether your teacher really dislikes you, or whether something else is going on. Here are some questions to ask yourself:1. Are you the only person being treated badly, or is your teacher rough on the whole class? Ask your classmates if they are having trouble with the teacher, too. If they say yes, perhaps your teacher is having problems outside the school, or is new and at a loss.2. Are you working up to your ability? Maybe you got a C in your last test, and your teacher told you that you could do better. But the kid sitting beside you got a C, too, and the teacher didn’t say anything to him! Isn’t this unfair? Well, it could be that your teacher knows that you could get a better grade if you put more effort into it. Teachers often grade students by different standards. It’s their way of encouraging a student to try a little harder.3. Are you more sensitive than other students? There’s nothing wrong with being sensitive, but if you react to criticism quite differently from others, this could be a reason why you think your teacher doesn’t like you.4. Does your teacher seem to act unfairly all the time, or just once in a while? Think about the harsh things your teacher has done or said to you. Are these things happening every day, or just once or twice a month? If your teacher really hates you, you would probably be picked on all the time. If your teacher hasacted unfairly only a few times, then there’s pro bably something else going on.If y ou take the time to ask yourself these questions, you’ll get a better sense of what’s happening between you and your teacher.Choose the best answer for each question.( )6. There are three main steps to get to where you want to go.First, sit down and write your dreams out. By writing them you will get a better idea of where you really want to go. Imagine yourself at the end of the year or maybe in five years. What do you see? How do people see you? What are you doing? Are you successful?Well, a dream is just that. It’s a vision of how you see yourself in the future. Once you know the direction in which you want to go, you can begin working on some goals.Secon d come the goals. Goals are “wants”. So are dreams, but goals are more specific. If you want to be rich, tell how much money you need to be rich. If you want good grades, tell what you mean by “good”. In fact, the more specific the goal is, the easier it w ill be to get it. Give numbers and times. Don’t use words like “lots” or “more”. For example, I want a “B” in each of my subjects.Third are the objectives. They tell exactly what you will doand when you will do it. When you think about what you will do, don’t use words like “try” or “maybe”. Be sure your objectives can be measured. Every day or every week you can say, “Did I do this?” and you can answer with either a yes or a no. Don’t leave room for “maybes”.OK. Here is another example. I say I want a “B” in each subject. My objectives are:I will go to every class every day.I will sit in the middle of the classroom.I will re-read my notes from every class every day.I will finish every assignment the day when it is given.Well, you get the idea. Each of my objectives is specific and each one can be measured. If Ido all these things, there is a pretty good chance for me to get what I want, which means I’ll fulfill my dream.Fill in the blanks with proper words according to the passage.11. The writer advises you to write your _______ out so that you can get a better idea of where you really want to go.12. Dreams are not so _______ as goals.13. _______ tell exactly what to do and when to do it.14. “I want to learn more English in the future” is a dream, while “I want to go to the English Department of Wuhan University” is a _______.15. A quiet man, he didn't understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.I didn't really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and l thought that I would surpass(超过)anything he had accomplished by the time l walked across the stage at high school graduation.Summers in the mid, 70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and painted at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.At home, my dad said, "A job's a big step to growing up. I'm glad you will be contributing to the household." My dad's words made me realize that my earning might not be mine to do with as wished. My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn't interested. I decided it was not fair that l had to contribute my money.注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

Their grades are lower and their dropout rates are higher. But since such students are most likely to advance economically if they succeed in higher education, colleges and universities have pushed for decades to recruit more of them. This has created “a paradox一个悖论” in that recruiting first- generation students, but then watching many of them fail, means that higher education has “continued to reproduce and widen, rather than close” a n achievement gap based on social class, according to the depressing beginning of a paper forthcomingadj. 即将来临的in the journal Psychological Science. But the article is actually quite optimistic, as it outlines vt.概述;略述a potential可能性solution to this problem, suggesting that an approach (which involves a one-hour, next-to-no-cost program) can close 63 percent of the achievement gap (measured by such factors as grades) between first-generation and other students. The authors of the paper are from different universities, and their findings are based on a study involving 147 students (who completed the project) at an unnamed private university. First generation was defined as not having a parent with a four-year college degree. Most of the first-generation students(59.1 percent) were recipients收件人of Pell Grants, a federal grant for undergraduates with financial need, while this was true only for 8.6 percent of the students with at least one parent with a four-year degree.Their thesis- that a relatively modest intervention could have a big impact- was based on the view that first-generation students may be most lacking not in potential but in practical knowledge about how to deal with the issues that face most college students. They cite past research by several authors to show that this is thegap that must be narrowed to close the achievement gap. Many first- generation students “struggle to navigate themiddle-class culture of higher education, learn the ‘rules of the game,’ and take advantage of college resources,” they write. Andthis becom es more of a problem when collages don’t talk aboutthe class advantage and disadvantages of different groups of students. Because US colleges and universities seldom acknowledge how social class can affect students ’educational experience, many first-generation students lack sight about whythey are struggling and do notunderstand how students’ likethem can improve.26. Recruiting招聘;招募more first- generation students has_______[A] reduced their dropout rates[B] narrowed the achievement成绩gap差距[C] missed its original 原创的purpose[D] depressed 使人沮丧college students27. The author of the research article are optimistic乐观的because_______[A] the problem is solvable[B] their approach is costless[C] the recruiting rate has increased[D] their finding appeal to students28. The author of the paper believe that first-generation students_______[A] are actually indifferent to the achievement gap[B] can have a potential influence on other students[C] may lack opportunities to apply for research projects[D] are inexperienced in handling their issues at college30. We may infer from the last paragraph that_______[A] universities often reject the culture of the middle-class[B] students are usually to blame for their lack of resources[C] social class greatly helps enrich educational experiences[D]colleges are partly responsible for the problem in question。

There will eventually come a day when The New York Times ceases to publish stories on newsprint. Exactly when that day will be is a matter of debate. ”Sometime in the future,” the paper’s publisher said back in 2010.
Nostalgia for ink on paper and the rustle of pages aside, there’s plenty of incentive to ditch print. The infrastructure required to make a physical newspaper – printing presses, delivery trucks –isn’t just expensive; it’s excessive at a time when online –only competitors don’t have the same set of financial constraints. Readers are migrating away from print anyway. And though print ad sales still dwarf their online and mobile counterparts, revenue from print is still declining.
Overhead may be high and circulation lower, but rushing to eliminate its print edition would be a mistake, says BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti.
Peretti says the Times shouldn’t waste time getting out of the print business, but only if they go about doing it the right way. “Figuring out a way to accelerate that transition would make sense for them,” he said, “but if you discontinue it, you’re going have your most loyal customers really upset with you.”
Sometimes that’s worth making a change anyway. Peretti gives the example of Netflix discontinuing its DVD-mailing service to focus on streaming. “It was seen as blunder,” he said. The move turned out to be foresighted. And if Peretti were in charge at the Times? ”I wouldn’t pick a year to end print,” he said “I would raise prices and make it into more of a legacy product.”
The most loyal customers would still get the product they favor, the idea goes, and they’d feel like they were helping sustain the quality of something they believe in. “So if you’re overpaying for print, you could feel like you were helping,” Peretti said. “Then increase it at a higher rate each year and essentially try to generate additional revenue.” In other words, if you’re going to make a print product, make it for the people who are already obsessed with it. Which may be what the Times is doing already. Getting the print edition seven days a week
costs nearly $500 a year –more than twice as much as a digital –only subscription.
“It’s a really hard thing to do and it’s a tremendous luxury that BuzzFeed doesn’t have a legacy business,” Peretti remarked. “But we’re going to have questions like that where we have things we’re doing that don’t make sense when the market changes and the world changes. In those situatio ns, it’s better to be more aggressive that less aggressive.”
36. The New York Times is considering ending it’s print edition partly due to
[A] the increasing online and sales
[B] the pressure from its investors
[C] the complaints from its readers
[D] the high cost of operation
37. Peretti suggests that in face of the present situation, The Times should

38. I t can be inferred from paragraphs 5and 6 that a ” legacy product”
[A] helps restore the glory of former times
[B] is meant for the most loyal customers
[C] will have the cost of printing reduced
[D] expands the popularity of the paper
39. Peretti believes that in a changing world
[A] traditional luxuries can stay unaffected
[B] cautiousness facilitates problem-solving
[C] aggressiveness better meets challenges
