A look at the following diagram from the National Training Labs provides one very obvious answer to the question, "Why don't our students retain more of what they learn?" It's becausewe are using the least effective method to teach them!
Although it has been well established that we retain very little of what we hear, the lecture continues to be the predominant method of teaching, especially at the secondary and higher education levels. Since by this point only 2-4 out of 10 students are auditory learners (data varies, though most studies come in closer to 2), 6-8 out of every 10 students are struggling to process the information they are expected to learn.
Confucius wisely observed:
I hear and I remember.
I do and I understand.
Just do it!
Keep the lectures to a minimum and deliberately seek alternative ways to involve students and accommodate different learning styles.
