Listen to a conversation between a student and a professor.
P: hey, Ellen how are you doing?
S: oh, pretty good thanks, how are you? Did you, um, have a chance to look at my graduates school application? You know the statement of purpose I wrote. P: well, yeah, in fact here it is, I just read it.
S: oh, great. What did you think?
P: what you might actually do is take some of the different points here and actually break them into some paragraphs. So, um…one your purpose for applying for graduate study: why do you want to go to graduate school and area of speciality, um, why you want to do the area you specified, um, and what do you want to do with your degree once you get it.
S: Ok.
P: so those are… they are pretty clear on those four points they want,
S: right
P: so, you might just break them out into…um, you know separate paragraphs and spend on each point some, but really what’s critical with these is that you have got to let yourself come through. See, you’ve got to let them see you in this statement, expand some more on what’s happening in your own life, and what shows your motivation and interesting in this area, in geology. Let them see what really, what captures your imagination about this field.
S: ok, so make it a little more personal? That’ ok?
P: that’s fine. They look for that stuff. Your don’t wanna go over board.
S: right
P: but it’s critical that somebody sees what your passion is, your personal motivation for doing this
S: ok.
P: and that’s got coming out in here, and let’s say you might also give a little, um, since this is your only chance, you might give a little more explanation about your unique undergraduate background。
