The widening education gap
In the time when educational reform is continuously advancing, the reality that less and less hardworking rural students can get tickets to elite universitieshas been gradually turning people's attention to the education gap. From my perspective, the educational reform has facilitated this change in some way.
With the advent of the educational reform, scores on a standardized test is no longer the solely factor of entry into a university.Elite universities in China have changed to put more emphasis on student’s comprehensive quality. However, because of the economic backwardness, rural students can hardly receivewell-rounded education, which means it is not easy for them to keep up with the pace of educational reform. What's worse, the idea"knowledge changes fate”, instilled in rural studentsever since they were born, is driving them to study even harder to get a higher score."I am not sure whether my efforts will be rewarded, but that is the only thing that I can do, andmy only way out.”said a junior student in Anhui, reflecting general notion among rural students. The society highlighting comprehensive quality exposes urban students to more opportunities to get accepted by their ideal universities, nevertheless making the competition for rural students, who hardly have an access to quality-oriented education, even more fierce in the process.
The imbalanced distribution of education funds is also one of the cardinal reasons. Statistics indicate thatonly 4% of the government funds areallotted to education, and most of the funds have been greatly inclined to urban areas. While urban students are enjoying advanced teaching facilities and outstanding teacher resource, rural students can't even see a predictable future with elementary schoolhouse and a stable group of teachers.
It is urgent that rural students, who make up 56 percent of China’s college-age population, are facing with such an education dilemma. To shrink the education gap, It is necessary for the government to adjust the allocation of government fund. Much more money should be steered toimprove education environment. Also, the government is obligedto begin more education projects and provide financialsubsidies aimed at students’well-rounded development. However, in the long run,the most effective way to eradicate the education gap will be nothing but narrowing the urban-rural wealth gap.。
