中外文学文化研究本栏目责任编辑:杨菲菲1The Color PurpleThe Color Purple by Alice Walker (1944-),an African -American writer, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 1982and the National Book Award in 1983,which is the first novel by an African American woman to win this award.Walker is a black feminist. She defines herself a feminist containing the following meanings:First, from womanish,a black feminist or feminist of color;Second, from the black folk expression of moth -ers to female children, usually referring to being outrageous,au -dacious,courageous or willful behavior;Third,a woman who loves other women, sexually or non -sexually,appreciates and prefers women's culture, women's emotional flexibility and wom -en's strength (Walker,1983).The novel tells the journey of Celie's (the protagonist)growth from an indifferent, forbearing teenager to a woman in complete possession of herself. There are many insightful critical writings on this novel. And Celie's role as a representation of black women questing for themselves is well accepted. But the supporting role,Sofia, does not get the atten -tion this character deserves in black feminism.2Black Women Oppressed in The Color PurpleThe novel is set in the American South from the 1920s to 1940s.At that time,America was a white -dominated society.Racial prejudice was prevailing. All black people had to face racial prejudice from the whites.Sofia alone in the novel chooses to fight back, while others just say some empty words, such as to "blow"the prison with gunpowder. When the mayor's wife asks Sofia to be her maid,Sofia refuses by saying "Hell no".When the mayor slaps her for this, she knocks him down. She defends her dignity, but was put into prison for that.In the prison, she learns to show "good behavior"to protect herself. But deep in her heart, she waits to fight back."I dream of murder …,I dream of murder sleep or wake."But in the end,she gets along with the white. What's more, the white seem to rely on her,as is shown by the wife of the mayor insisting on Sofia accompanying her back home and the white little girl Eleanor Jane loving her.Through the character of Sofia,Walker tries to show us a way for the white and the black to get along through tolerance and love.Thisis the author's search for a solution to the racial problem.Faced with the giant mountain of racism,Sofia fights with her fists and her mind. She is never defeated in this war.In the 1920s to 1940s,America was a largely patriarchal society;women have to fight against the oppression of men.Dif -ferent from Celie,Sofia comes into our sight with a keen sense of rebellion and autonomy. To get out of her father's home and mar -ry Harpo, she gets pregnant and that works. And facing Harpo'father, she is not timid at all."They be just marching …,like go -ing to war.She is in front a little."Finally,Sofia and Harpo get married."All my life I had to fight.I had to fight my daddy.I had to fight my brothers.I had to fight my cousins and my un -cles.A girl child isn't safe in a family of men."This is a summa -ry of Sofia's situation, and of black women's situation. Her fight against the patriarchal society is successful for now.But it is not the end. When Harpo tries to rule over her,she fights relentless -ly."I love Harpo …God knows I do.But I'll kill him dead before I let him beat me."When the war lasts too long, she chooses de -parture.But surely she will not submit. But she is emotionally hurt this time."But I never thought I'd have to fight in my own house."In the end,Sofia and Harpo reunite. They still argue with each other. But Harpo no longer tries to rule over her.He calls Sofia and her sisters "amazons".He accepts her way:a woman in possession of themselves, with strength, freedom, and autonomy. He even thinks from the perspective of women."I wonder what they wives have to put up with."Harpo has "done learn some -thing."He realizes that men do not necessarily have to rule over women and women are not "weaker".Not only Harpo, but also the entire black community accepts the autonomy and strength of women,as is shown in Sofia and her sisters being pallbearers in her mother's funeral:"Folks …they don't stare at Sofia and her sisters. They act like this the way it always done."Faced with the giant mountain of patriarchal oppression, she fights with strength, wisdom and patience. However,it is this war that undermines the black people's power in fighting the white."If you hadn't tried to rule over Sofia the white folks never would have caught her."And in the war against black males, the black women get wounded not only physically, but also psychologically.Walker tries to show the收稿日期:2011-05-10修回日期:2011-06-15基金项目:山东科技大学科学研究“春蕾计划”项目(2010AZZ145)作者简介:刘智慧(1979-),女,山东陵县人,研究方向为英美文学。
