Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicine are stopping coughs. The team found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin need to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levers of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo. The researchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a nerve activity(神经活动), which cause coughing. 阅读理解A(2020·北京房山区高三模拟)Gabriella’s family immigrated to the US fromPeru when she was two years old. As a compound bilingual(熟谙两种语言的人),Gabriella develops two linguistic codes at the same time, with a set of concepts, learning both English and Spanish. Her teenage brother, on the other hand, mightbe a coordinate bilingual, working with two sets of concepts, learning English in school, Spanish at home. Finally, Gabriella’s parents are likely to be subordinate bilinguals who learned a second language by translating it into their mother tongue.Regardless of accent and pronunciation, all types of bilingual people can become fully proficient in a language. It seems that the difference may not be apparent. But recently brain imaging technology has given a glimpse into how specific aspects of language learning affect the bilingual brain. It’s well known that the brain’s left hemisphere(半球) is in charge of logical processes, while the right hemisphere is more active in emotional and social ones. Language involves both types of functions. Critical period hypothesis says children learn languages more easily because their developing brains let them use both hemispheres in language learning, while in most adults, language relies on one hemisphere, usually the left. Before the 1960s, bilingualism was considered a handicap that slowed the children’s development by forcing them to spend too much energy distinguishing between languages. But a recent study did show that bilingualism may make you smarter. It does make your brain more complex, healthier, and more actively engaged, and even if you didn’t have the good fortune of learning a second language like a child, it’s never too late to do yourself a favor and make the linguistic leap from “Hello” to “Hola”“Bonjour” or “nihao” because when it comes to our brains, a little exercise can go a long way.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

高考英语10选9阅读讲解+及巩固提升含答案2021Passage1Researchers are placing robotic dogs(机器狗)in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the 1 of life for humans. Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study 2 the influence of robotic dogs on old people's depression, physical activity, and left satisfaction. "No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated," Edwards 3 out. "The problem is how we promote that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution."In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. 4 placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO. Then, the researchers will review the data to 5 if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner."I talk to him all the time, and he 6 to my voice," says a seventy-year-old lady, "When I'm watching TV, he'll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own." The AlBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some 7 over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are 8 and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns."At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry." Beck says. " 9 it's amazing how quickly we have given up that belief." "Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more-valuable health helper. They will record their masters' blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms. AlBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people's minds. The actor has to speak words which he has learned by heart; he has to 4 exactly the same work each time he plays a certain part; even his movements and the way he uses his voice are usually fixed before. 5 he has to do is to make all these carefully learned words and actions seem natural on the stage. The good teacher works in quite a different 6 . His audience takes an active part in his play, they ask and answer question, they 7 orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act 8 the need of his audience in his class.I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to play a part in a stage-play because their brains would not keep discipline; they could not keep strictly to what 9 had written.BFHIA JCGDPassage3American scientists have found the first concrete 1 that playing music can significantly improve the brain and 2 hearing for all kinds of sounds, 3 speech." This is reflected in Chinese cuisine, where almost every flavor is used in a balanced way creating delicious dishes with flavors that go well together. The cuisine of the United States also reflects its history. The European colonization of the Americas brought European ingredients and cooking styles to the U. S.As the world becomes more globalized, it is easier to access cuisines from different cultures.
e.g. May I come in?Was the People’s Liberation Army founded in 1927?2、为了强调某一部分,而把这部分放到句首,构成倒装。
e.g. Never have I been late for school this term.So early did he come to school that no other students came.(二)倒装的使用情况1、在“there be” 结构里,there是引导词,主语在be后。
e.g. There is a box on the table.2、在疑问句中。
e.g. Is she singing in the classroom? What does your mother do?3、在here, there等副词开头的某些句子里(要用一般现在时态)。

状语从句是一较大的语法项目,也是近几年高考题中常见的一个重要试点一、状语从句的种类(一)时间状语从句表示时间的状语从句可由when, as, while, whenever, after, before, till (until), since, once, as soon as (或the moment ), by the time, no sooner … than, hardly (scarcely) … when, every time等引导。
e.g. When I came into the office, the teachers were having a meeting. He started as soon as he received the news.Once you see him, you will never forget him.No sooner had I gone to bed than I went to sleep.(二)原因状语从句原因状语从句是表示原因或理由的,引导这类从句的最常用的连词是because, since, as , now that(既然)等,for 表示因果关系时(它引导的不是从句)为并列连词,语气不如because强。
e.g. He is disappointed because he didn't get the position. As it is raining, I will not go out.Now that you mention it, I do remember.(三)地点状语从句引导地点状语从句的连词是where 和wherever等。
e.g. Sit wherever you like.Make a mark where you have a question.(四)目的状语从句引导目的状语从句最常用的词(组)是so, so that(从句谓语常有情态动词), in order that, in case (以防,以免)等。
e.g. Speak clearly, so that they may understand you.She has bought the book in order that she could follow the TV lessons. He left early in case he should miss the train.(五)结果状语从句结果状语从句是表示事态结果的从句,通常主句是原因,从句是结果。
由so that (从句谓语一般没有情态动词), so … that, such … that等引导。
e.g. She was ill, so that she didn’t attend the meeting. He was so excited that he could not say a word. She is such a good teacher that everyone admires her.(六)条件状语从句条件状语从句分真实性(有可能实现的事情)与非真实性(条件与事实相反或者在说话者看来不大可能实现的事情)条件句。
引导条件状语从句的词(组)主要有if, unless, so (as) long as, on condition that, so (as) far as, if only ( = if )。
e.g. If he is not in the office, he must be out for lunch. You may borrow the book so long as you keep it clean. So far as I know(据我所知), he will be away for three months. You can go swimming on condition that ( = if ) you don’t go too far away from the river bank.If he had come a few minutes earlier, he could have seen her.(七)让步状语从句让步状语从句可由although, though, as, even if (though), however, whatever, whether … or, no matter who (when, what, …)
e.g. Though he is a child, he knows a lot.Child as he is, he knows a lot.Whatever ( = No matter what ) you say, I’ll never change my mind.(八)方式状语从句方式状语从句常由as, as if (though), the way, rather than等引导。
e.g. You must do the exercise as I show you.He acted as if nothing had happened.(九)比较状语从句比较状语从句常用than, so (as) … as, the more … the more等引导。
e.g. I have made a lot more mistakes than you have.He smokes cigarettes as expensive as he can afford. The busier he is, the happier he feels.
e.g. We’ll go outing if it doesn’t rain tomorrow.I’ll write to you as soon as I get to Shanghai.2、有些时间、地点、条件、方式或让步从句,如果从句的主语与主句主语一致(或虽不一致,是it),从句的谓语又包含动词be ,就可省略从句中的“主语+ be”部分。
e.g. When (he was) still a boy of ten, he had to work day and night. If (you are) asked you may come in.If (it is) necessary I’ll explain to you again.3、注意区分不同从句:引导的是什么从句,不仅要根据连词,还要根据句子结构和句意来判别。
e.g. You are to find it where you left it.(地点状语从句)Tell me the address where he lives.(定语从句,句中有先行词)I don’t know where he came from.(宾语从句)Where he has gone is not known yet.(主语从句)This place is where they once hid.(表语从句)【状语从句·要点精练】1.______he has limited technical knowledge, the old worker has a lot of experience.
