FIRST PAPER, HISTORY 8
Winter 2014
Please answer one of the following questions.
1. Did the Spanish seek the destruction of all aspects of the native societies they encountered in the Andes? Explain how the book Huarochirí addresses this question. Specifically, which pre-Columbian Andean institutions and forms of social and political organization did the Spaniards keep, in any, and why? Second, how did they transform them throughout the three centuries of Spanish rule? Finally, do you think the Spanish strategies of domination in the Andes succeeded over time? You must refer both to Huarochirí, and the following documents in your reader: Guamán Poma de Ayala’s “Appeal Concerning Priests”, “Author’s Letter”, and “Rulers of Peru”; Alberto Flores Galindo, “The Rebellion of Túpac Amaru”; Melchor de Paz, “What is an Indian?”; José Antonio de Areche, “All Must Die!”; and “Letters of Insurrection”. Make sure to cite all your sources.
2. Who were the kurakas and what role did they play during the colonial period in Andean society? Analyze the role of the kurakas from the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century to the aftermath of the Tupac Amaru II rebellion (1780-81). Explain how the role (and fate) of the kurakas evolved throughout this period. Consider continuities and changes between the kuraka of the sixteenth century and the kuraka of the eighteenth century.
3. You are an envoy of the king of Spain who arrives in the kingdom of Peru in 1750, nearly two centuries after viceroy Francisco de Toledo initiated his reforms. You have to write a report to the king, who knows nothing about these reforms. Explain him what measures were taken and why, and if you think Toledo's reforms were successful. In the report, remind the Crown why Toledo was sent to Peru and explain the situation the viceroy encountered there regarding the relations between the Indians, the kurakas and the Spanish. The king is also very interested in the spread of the Catholic faith among the Indians, so your report must include an account of the Christianization of the Indians since 1540, when the bishop of Lima first provided instructions to the clergy on their conversion. Your main sources for this question are the book Huarochirí, and the texts written by Guamán Poma de Ayala in your reader. Feel free to use any other pertinent documents from your reader, and the textbook. Make sure to cite all your sources. PRESENTATION
