Why College Is Not HomeThe college years are supposed to be a time for important growth in autonomy and the development of adult identity. However, now they are becoming an extended period of adolescence, during which many of today’s students are not shouldered with adult responsibilities. For previous generations, college was a decisive break from parental control; guidance and support needed to come from people of the same age and from within. In the past two decades, however, continued connection with and dependence on family, thanks to cell phones, email and social media, have increased significantly. Some parents go so far as to help with coursework. Instead of promoting the idea of college as a passage from the shelter of the family to autonomy and adult responsibility, universities have given in to the idea that they should provide the same environment as that of the home.To prepare for increased autonomy and responsibility, college needs to be a time of exploration and experimentation. This process involves “trying on” new ways of thinking about oneself both intellectually and personally. While we should provide “safe spaces” within colleges, we must also make it safe to express opinions and challenge majority views. Intellectual growth and flexibility are fostered on debate and questioning.Learning to deal with the social world is equally important. Because a college community differs from the family, many students will struggle to find a sense of belonging. If students rely on administrators to regulate their social behavior and thinking pattern, they are not facing the challenge of finding an identity within a larger and complex community. Moreover, the tendency for universities to monitor and shape student behavior runs up against another characteristic of young adults: the response to being controlled by their elders. If acceptable social behavior is too strictly defined and controlled, the insensitive or aggressive behavior that administrators are seeking to minimize may actually be encouraged. It is not surprising that young people are likely to burst out, particularly when there are reasons to do so. Our generation once joined hands and stood firm at times of national emergency. What is lacking today is the conflict between adolescent’s desire for autonomy and their understanding of an unsafe world. Therefore, there is the desire for their dorms to be replacement homes and not places to experience intellectual growth.Every college discussion about community values, social climate and behavior should include recognition of the developmental importance of student autonomy and self-regulation, of the necessary tension between safety and self-discovery.67. What’s the author’s attitude toward continued parental guidance to college students?A. SympatheticB. DisapprovingC. SupportiveD. Neutral68. The underlined word “passage” in Paragraph 2 means________.A. changeB. choiceC. textD. extension69. According to the author, what role should college play?A. To develop a shared identity among students.B. To define and regulate students’ social behavior.C. To provide a safe world without tension for students.D. To foster students’ intellectual and personal development.

The Oral Health and Performance in Sport conference in London heard that athletes' oral health was often bad and could impair training and performance. At the pinnacle of elite sport, the difference between winning and losing is tiny, so even marginal improvements can make a crucial difference.Doctors for Team GB's boxing squad are already trying to improve oral health.DisruptiveA study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, showed a fifth of athletes said their oral health damaged their training and performance for the Games. At the conference, dentists said tooth pain could disrupt sleep and training and that inflammation of the gums could affect the rest of the body, impairing performance. It is not unusual for poor oral health to have wider effects. The NHS says it is linked to type 2 diabetes and heart problems.A regular floss(牙线), a bottle of mouthwash and good brushing technique are not going to transform a weekend jogger into an Olympian. However, Prof Ian Needleman, director of the International Centre for Evidence-Based Oral Health at University College London, says there could be an impact in elite sport. He told the BBC: "It's the accumulation of marginal gains, where the difference between elite athletes at the very top is small. Then oral health, amongst other aspects, could make a difference."The research we did at London 2012 found a large proportion of young athletes, fantastically well tuned physically, had really poor oral health."Quite a high proportion reported an impact on their training and performance so it's clearly an issue for them."。

I had always described it as a once in a lifetime experience, but as soon as I stepped foot on the continent, I immediately knew I needed to return.____16____ About 50% of the passengers of our expedition (远征) had been to Antarctica at least once before. This goes to show just how magical of a destination it is.All your senses will be stimulated...is the best way I can describe the time on the white continent. How tiny you feel next to towering glaciers and icebergs. The icy water moving through your body as you take the infamous Polar Plunge. The learning of heart-touching stories of survival from explorers of the past. ____17____ Antarctica makes you feel so small and insignificant, in the best way. ____18____ You get front row seats to witness the most incredible show: nature. This is bad, for we want people to work, not beg. Working is productive while begging is at best neutral and often a burden. Second, the beggar who receives the money might spend it on alcohol or drugs. ____17____When I went to elementary school, I remember that I was very moved by a song named "Streets of London". The song tells a heartbreaking story about some of London's poorest, an old man in particular. Not long ago, however, when I heard the song on the radio, it struck me that the man in the song does not live that horrible a life after all. Judging from the lyrics of the song, the man has shoes, and occasional access to a newspaper. ____18____ So why should you give money to the beggar in the developed world instead of the starving child in Africa? It might be harsh to claim that it is immoral to give money to Western beggars. After all, it seems reasonable that you can spend the money as you like. ____19____ If our aim is to benefit ourselves, then giving money to beggars is not suitable. If our aim is to benefit others, then giving money to beggars is also wasteful. In seeking to help others, we should not merely give to those who are geographically close to us and whose appearance arouses our sympathy. ____20____ To achieve this, we should first decide how much we are willing to spend helping others, and then donate money to the most efficient charity.A.Many people die of hunger in Africa.B.True as it might be, we should spend our money wisely.C.Why not donate money to those in need of financial aid?D.Upon reflection, however, I have come to change my mind.E.You almost certainly spend money helping the wrong people.F.In a world where thousands die of hunger every day, that's a pretty comfortable life.G.Rather, we should aid those who are the least responsible for the situation they're in. How I Signed My Kids Up for Rock ClimbingAs a sports family we’ve tried it all. It was at the farmer’s market that I saw a group from the local climbing gym handing out flyers. ___16___ They break up the age groups into 6—8 and 9—12 and there’s also no gender separation in rock climbing. The Art of Slow ReadingIf you are reading this article in print, chances are that you will only get through half of what I have written. And if you are reading this online, you may not even finish a fifth. ____16____ They suggest that many of us no longer have the concentration to read articles through to their conclusion. So are we getting stupider? Actually, our online habits are damaging the mental power we need to process and understand textual information. Round-the-clock news makes us read from one article to the next without necessarily engaging fully with any of the content. Our reading is frequently interrupted by the noise of the latest email and we are now absorbing short bursts of words on Twitter and Facebook more regularly than longer texts. ____17____ But we are gradually forgetting how to sit back, think carefully, and relate all the facts to each other.____18____ A desperate bunch of academics want us to take our time while reading, and re-reading. They ask us to switch off our computers every so often and rediscover both the joy of personal engagement with printed texts, and the ability to process them fully. What's to be done then? Most slow readers realize that total rejection of the web is extremely unrealistic. They feel that getaway from technology for a while is the answer. ____19____ Personally, I'm not sure whether I could ever go offline for long. Even while writing this article, I am switching constantly between sites, skimming too often, absorbing too little. Internet reading has become too rooted in my daily life for me to change. I read essays and articles not in hard copy but as PDFs. I suspect that many readers are in a similar position. ____20____ You can download a computer application called Freedom, which allows you to read in peace by cutting off your Internet connection. Or if you want to avoid being disturbed by the Internet, you could always download offline reader Instapaper for your iPhone. If you're still reading my article, that is slow reading.A. The Internet is probably part of the problem.B. Now some campaigns are advocating slow reading.C. These are the two findings from the recent research projects.D. But if you just occasionally want to read more slowly, help is at hand.E. Some of them have suggested turning their computers off for one day a week.F. Slow reading can help connect a reader to neighborhood and become popular.G. Because of the Internet, we have become very good at collecting information.【答案】16. C 17. G18. B 19. E20. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate. This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then theirerrors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down. But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals. In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds? This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together.” Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations many questions remain the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.32. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?A. The methods of estimation.B. The underlying logic of the effect.C. The causes of people’s errors.D. The design of Galton’s experiment.33. Navajas’ study found that the average accuracy could increase even if ________.A. the crowds were relatively smallB. there were occasional underestimatesC. individuals did not communicateD. estimates were not fully independent34. What did the follow-up study focus on?A. The size of the groups.B. The dominant members.C. The discussion process.D.

One of the problems in our daily lives is that many of us rush through the day, with no time for anything……and when we have time to get a bite to eat, we gobble it down. That leads to stressful, unhealthy living.
And with the simpe but powerful act of eating slower, we can begin to reverse that lifestyle immediately. How hard is it? You take smaller bites, you chew each bite slower and longer, and you enjoy your meal longer.
It takes a few minutes extra each meal, and yet it can have profound effects.
You may have already heard of the Slow Food Movement started in Italy almost two decades ago to counter the fast food movement. Everyting that fast food is, Slow Food isn't.
If you read the Slow Food Manifesto, you'll see that it's not just about health--it's about a lifestyle. And whether you want to adopt that lifestyle or not, there are some reasons you should consider the simple act of eating slower.
LOSE WEIGHT. A great number of studies confirm that just by eating slower, you'll consume fewer calories--in fact, enough to lose 200 pounds a year without doing anything defferent or eating anyting different. The reason is that it takes about 20 minutes for our brains to register that we're full. If we eat fast, we can continue eating past the point where we're full. If we eat slowly, we have time to realize we're full, and stop in time. Now, I would still recommend that you eat healthier foods, but if you're looking to losing weight, eating slowly should be a part of your new lifestyle.
ENJOY YOUR FOOD. The reason is just as powerful, in my opinion. It's hard to enjoy your food if it goes by too quickly. In fact, I think it's fine to eat sinful foods (desserts, fried foods, pizza, etc.)if you eat a small amount slowly. Think about it: you want to eat sinful food because they taste good. But if you eat them fast, what's the point? If you eat them slowly, you can get the same amount of great taste, but with less going into your stomach. That's math that works for me. And that argument aside, I think you are just happier by tasting great food and enjoy it fully by eating slowly. Make your meals a gastronomic pleasure, not a thing you do rushed, between stressful events.
BETTER DIGESTION. If you eat slower, you'll chew your food better, which leads to better digestion. Digestion actually starts in the mouth, so the more work you do up there, the less you'll have to do in your stomach. This can help lead to fewer digestive problems.
LESS STRESS. Eating slowly, and paying attention to our eating, can be a great form of meaningful exercise. Be in the moment, rather than running through a meal thinkingabout what you need to do next. When you eat, you should eat. This kind of mindfulness, I believe, will lead to a less stressful life, and long-term happiness. Give it a try.
REBEL AGAINST FAST FOOD AND FAST LIFE. Our hectic, fast-paced, stressful, chaotic lives-the Fast Life-leads to eating Fast Food, and eating it quickly. This is a lifestyle that is dehumanizing us, making us unhealthy, stressed out, and unhappy. We rush through our day, doing one mindless task after another, without time to live life, to enjoy life,
to relate to each other, to be human. That's not a good thing in my book. Instead, rebel against that entire liifestyle and philosophy……with the s mall act of eating slower. Don't eat Fast Food. Eat at a good restaurant, or better yet, cook your own food and enjoy it fully. Taste life itself.
