Heaven or Hell Valley天堂地狱谷In midwinter when it is snowing heavily, a group of monkeys are bathing in a hot spring. Who says it is only human being’s patent to enjoy life? Monkeys will too. In Japan, this group of pictures attracted the film crew of “Across Asia”. Therefore, we decided to go to Jigokudani Nagano Prefecture in central Japan to visit the monkeys who can bathe in the hot spring. To go to Nagano from Kanazawa needs to cross over Mt. Tateyama. In every winter, heavy snow will seal the mountain passes. In April next y ear, the ice and snow will melt. People who have been blocked for a whole winter dig out the original roads without delay. As a result, snowy walls of tens of meters in Mt. Tateyama come into being. Which make tourists can’t help a cclaiming at them. The group of monkeys we are going to visit is called Japanese Snow Monkeys as they live in snowy areas half of the year. When we passed by Gero Town, Gifu Prefecture, it was another season. Though there was no weep Simon polar, every family had spring water. In this very creative stone hole, hot spring is flowing here. if people are tired with walking, they can immerse their feet into the spring water of 50 centigrade after taking off shoes and socks, which will drive away their fatigue immediately. When we were enjoying the spring water, it suddenly reminded us of the group of monkeys who comfortably enjoy hot spring. Amazing bestowal from nature should not be enjoy ed by human beings exclusively. The road was winding. When our car came to Yamanouchi-Machi, even the winding road disappeared. We have no choice but walk. Though communication was not so convenient, we expected more. Special director Matsumoto from Nagoya TV Station who accompanied us to interview let us to walk forward. When we were wondering there was no road ahead of us except the overlapping mountains and waters. Suddenly we saw a household along the stream. It was the place we were going to stay tonight, Korakukan, a hot spring hotel located in Jigokudani. Is there anybody? We are staff of CCTV. We come here for interview. This is a family hotel. The owner’s family name is Takehusi. Three generations of Takehusi’s family are living in the hotel. The rooms are typical Japanese rooms. They are not luxurious, but clean. After we put down our luggage, Mrs. Takehusi presented Japanese rice dumplings to us, which made us who from a foreign country feel warm. Outside the window it is green mountains and water. The monkeys who bathe in hot spring are living on the mountain opposite. It was already dark, and the monkeys had returned to the mountain. This place is funny. There is a board written with Japanese. Happiness of monkeys and moon in spring. After the long drive, we must take the supper seriously. The boiling hotpot with wild duck meat and various mushrooms tasted mild. It was not as spicy as hotpot in China at all. After enjoying the meal, we worried that whether we could see the monkeys bathing in hot spring as the weather had turned warm. At 8 o’clock in the morning, with whi stle by worker, monkeys went down the mountain in groups. Monkeys here were not afraid of human at all. They ran fast towards us. But after seeing monkeys pass by our feet and run fast towards food, we were more scared than hurt. The hot spring pool was right beside the river bank. After eating and drinking to their satisfaction, the monkeys really went into the pool. The monkeys were not so well-behaved in hot spring. They were naughty. They were swimming, hunting cooties, scratching an itch, playing or fighting. How happy they were! At the sight of this scene, we suddenly wondered why such a harmonious scene was called Jigokudani? Overlooking at the hot spring mouth of Jigokudani, we were more surprised. Didn’t know from what time, a rainbow was extending across the sky over the hot spring. The scene looked like a dreamland. We didn’t actually feel nature’s power until we came to the mouth of the hot spring. A stream of hot water sprayed out from underground with sound like thunder. We did not dare to close to it, but the owner had got used to it. He knocked away the substance accumulated at the mouth of the hot spring with a hammer so that water could spray smoothly. Do you feel hot? Of course it is hot. Don’t you see it reads as it is 98 centigrade? The iron rod will dry soon if you place it here. Suddenly, something likea stone was sprayed out. Lucky no one was hit by it. This stuff can be sprayed out. What’s its main ingredient? Magnesium. You can take it away. It is said that this is concentrated magnesi um. Scientific research has proved that it will take 30 y ears for surface water to permeate into underground and turn into hot spring water, and then spray out from ground surface. If someone covers Jigokudani with a hat to prohibit water from flowing, energy equal to that released by volcanic eruption will be accumulated within only one year. Because, Shiga Highlands, where Jigokudani is located, was covered by rising hot spring steam in ancient times, and holes spraying water would make sounds like angry roaring. It was like hell bathing in fire. So it was called Jigokudani. No one had expected that it could become a bathing paradise for monkeys today. The hot spring in Jigokudani is listed as one of the most distinctive hot springs in the world due to the monkeys bathing here. Hagiwara Toshio is an administrator of Monkeys Park and also a photographer. The photos of monkeys bathing in hot spring at the beginning of this video were his works. Many photographers have come to Jigokudani to take photos of monkeys, but only Hagiwara is in good timing and favorable geographical convenience. He could distinguish the over 200 monkeys in Monkeys Park, and gave nicknames to many of them. He even knew very well the kinship relationship between monkeys. These are three sisters. The one on the left is eldest sister, the one on the right is the second-elder-sister and the one in the middle is the youngest. In the society of monkeys, mother-child relationship is the core, and the secondary relationship is brothers and sister. Monkeys in blood relationship will move in a territory close to each other and take care of each other. Of course, in the world of monkeys, neighborhood conflicts and waves of world also exist. Once a dispute rises, it may not be settled by force. Afte r a dispute rises, the mother monkey will show and back up her child, and then mother of the opposite side will also come. As a result, dispute will become more serious. At this time, the male monkey will come out and tell them not to fight any more, and it will punish the side that is wrong. It is sure that monkey is close relative of human being. Actions of monkeys and human beings have much in common. But to clean ears with both hands and feet gives the trick out. It is beyond human being’s ability. At 10 o’clock in the morning, Takehusi’s mother erased moss in the pool with brush as usual. When the hot spring hotel was passed down to this old lady, it was the sixth generation. The family had been living here for 140 years. Business of Takehusi’s hotel wa s getting better. People coming here from cities would like to have some wild food. So Takehusi would go to dig wild vegetables in mountains every day. He wore thick leather boots which was almost five kilograms. It was said to be used to protect him from attack by snakes in forests. This is Jianma. It can be used in Japanese cold dish. Jianma with big leaves can be used in frying Tempura. This is called Kongkongmi in Japanese, and also called “wild cycad”. Firstly boil it in water, and then add some soy sauce and sesame paste into it, and then mix them. It was time to prepare lunch for guests. Takehusi’s mother also came to help. Upon hearing we were from China, the old lady was excited. She took out her pictures taken in China when she was a child. This is Zhangjiakou. This is my father in Chinese clothes. I was living in Zhangjiakou when I was two and three years old. This is my Chinese cheongsam. The photo has faded away, but it is moving and nostalgic. They are my parents. The old lady’s father was a Jap anese Consul in Zhangjiakou in 1930s, while her uncle Kitani Ishi was a good friend of Wu Qingyuan, a master of Weiqi during the period of Republic of China. Wu Qingyuan once visited her uncle and Jigokudani, where he created the new layout method of Weiqi which shocked Japan chess circle. When researching the new layout method of Weiqi, he (Wu Qingyuan) and Kitani Ishi were living in Room 6 upstairs during the whole period. Weiqi’s chessboard base with signature of Wu Qingyuan, at the time, Wu Qingyuan said, “this chessboard base is no good”. It’s not the one that I have signed my name on it. The old lady was 70 years old this year. She still remembered her good impression of China when she was a child. China is a place which I’m yearning for. In my memory, I remember I had good times with little friends from the house behind my home. Injection made me feel pain. I went for a walk with girls. I could only remember these. Time will not rush away naïve memory of childhood. People may come from different countr ies and havedifferent cultures, but the simplest emotions based on humanity are in common. In the noon, when we were taking a rest, we heard somebody knocking on window. It turned out to be monkeys. Maybe it is too lonely in mountain; the little poppet come to interrupt human beings in the hotel to have fun from time to time. A monkey swaggered along the hot spring pool, which scared the old sir who was bathing in the pool. Fortunately, the monkey just walked by and did not attack him nor intended to bathe in hot spring with him. In Monkey Park, tourists are strictly prohibited from feeding monkeys. In this way, monkeys will not attack human beings for begging for food. Maybe this is the reason why snow monkeys in Jigokudani are civilized. Unexpectedly, during our interview, our figures were uploaded to the website of Jigokudani Monkey Park. It turned out that cameras were installed in the place where monkeys bathe in hot spring. People who care about the monkeys can see them at all parts of the world. We di dn’t know whether there were words like “monkey sprite” in Japanese. We saw an apple was placed in a transparent plastic pipe and then we watched how the monkeys reacted. A monkey drove away the other monkey, but it could only cast greedy eyes on the apple as the former one. It scratched its head as it could only see it but could not reach for it. Finally, a smart monkey appeared. Monkeys can imitate human beings, but they are not clever enough that they can imitate in a moment. You need to teach them repeatedly. They will grasp the skills and movements. Monkeys imitating human beings is because they are dull instead of being clever. Nagano Prefecture is located in inland alpine belts in Japan, and is called eaves of Japan. In 1998, the 18th Winter Olympic Games was held here. The Japanese snow monkey, primates as human being, also loves snow. On one side is cold snow; while on the other side is warm hot spring. Clever monkeys will not stand by. This is reasonable anyhow. Later in the 33rd or 34th year during the reign of Showa Mikado, namely around 1958, an old seaman’s leg got hurt and lived here for a month. At this time, the monkeys came and imitated the seaman. After these people were gone, I saw the monkeys used their front paws to measure the water’s te mperature, and then bathed in the hot spring. In Japanese customs, they also eat rice dumplings. The daughter-in-law has learned skills from mother-in-law. The old lady told us proudly that she was able to make six rice dumplings when she was young, but no w she could only make three as she was old. Making rice dumplings is also a custom passed down from previous generations in Takehusi’s family. Takehusi’s ancestors were rich in the town, but later they had to move into deep mountains as they lost all of their properties. Seven generations have lived here in the past 140 years. After the rice dumplings are ready, they should be boiled in hot spring water. But never boil them in outdoor hot spring water. The monkeys will take them away. In the past, there was an old female monkey which would come into our house by detouring the dog and caused many damages. It stole our rice dumplings and apples. But later there were more and more young monkeys, and they bullied the old female monkey. At last, it never came again. Though every time its coming to our home would cause damages, we still miss it when it does not come again. At 5 o’clock in the afternoon, it was time to let the monkeys go back to mountains. For the purpose of recognition of their performance in the day, each monkey was given a big apple. Nagano Prefecture abounded in apple. Of course, the first apple should be given to Monkey King. It would hold one apple in its paw while eating one. It seemed it was good to be the king, because the king could enjoy special treatment. On the other hand, it was monkey’s nature to covet those in pot when eating what is in its bowl. As monkeys often come to visit, much vitality is added to Takehusi’s home. When a passport was taken away. Yes, passport was important, so the person put away her passport in a nylon bag and then went to bathe in hot spring. The process was seen by a monkey, and it thought the passport might be something delicious, so it took the passport away. Then I saw an Asian woman in swim suit ran towards this way and shouted “my passport is stolen”。
