AEuropeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland's volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic(微小的) ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because inhaled(吸入) particles can enter the lungs and cause respiratory problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.Other experts, however, weren't convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on peoples' health and said WHO's warnings were "hysterical." They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. Volcanic ash is made of fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock. It is light gray to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause irritation even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently hovering above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say."Not all particles are created equal," said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, "In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful." And he said most Europeans' exposure tovolcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. "The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven't heard of any ill effects there," he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was "over the top" and "a bit hysterical."1. The text is mainly about ______.A. the effect of volcanic ashB. the health risk of volcanic ashC. the disadvantages of volcanic ashD. the opinions on health risk of volcanic ash2. Which one is true according to Paragraph3?______.A. The volcanic ash’s effects on Europeans were little.B. The ash caused irritation even in healthy people.C. Other experts thought WTO’S warning s were useful.D. The volcanic ash was more dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution.3. The underlined word “hysterical” in Paragraph3 most probably means ______.A. amazingB. practicalC. valuableD. overstated4. What can we learn from the passage?______.A. The volcanic ash wouldn’t be harmful to people.B. All experts thought the volcanic ash did great harm to our health.C. People close to the volcano would likely be at risk according to some experts.D. Europeans should stay indoors because Iceland's volcano starts settling.BToo much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs.Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first- class roads, and other support facilities(配套设施)needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists , jobs and money are lost.5.Too much tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT ________ .A. a bad effect on other industriesB. a change of tourists’ customsC. over - crowdedness of places of interestD. pressure on traffic6.It can be inferred from the text that ________ .A. the author doesn’t like tourism developing so fastB. local people will benefit from tourist attractionC. other parts of a country’s economy won’t benefit from tourism muchD. we can't build too many support facilities7.The author thinks it is good for local people to know that tourism will ________ .A. waste a lot of moneyB. weaken their economyC. help establish their customsD. help improve their lifeCImagine a mass of floating waste is two times the size of the state of Texas. Texas has a land area of more than 678 000 square kilometers. So it might be difficult to imagine anything twice as big.All together, this mass of waste flowing in the North Pacific Ocean is known as the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. It weighs about 3 500 000 tons. The waste includes bags, bottles and containers—plastic products of all kinds. The eastern part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch is about l 600 kilometers west of California. The western part is west of the Hawaiian Islands andeast of Japan. The area has been described as a kind of oceanic desert, with light winds and slow moving water currents. The water moves so slow that garbage from all over the world collects there. In recent years, there have been growing concerns about the floating garbage and its effect on sea creatures and human health. Scientists say thousands of animals get trapped in the floating waste, resulting in death or injury. Even more die from a lack of food or water after swallowing pieces of plastic. The trash can also make animals feel full, lessening their desire to eat or drink. The floating garbage also can have harmful effects on people. There is an increased threat of infection of disease from polluted waste, and from eating fish that swallowed waste. Divers can also get trapped in the plastic. Its existence first gained public attention in l997. That was when racing boat captain and oceanographer Charles Moore and his crew sailed into the garbage while returning from a racing event. Five years earlier, another oceanographer learned of the trash after a shipment of rubber duckies got lost at sea. Many of those toys are now part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. In August,2009,a team from the University of California,San Diego became the latest group to travel to it. They were shocked by the amount of waste they saw. They gathered hundreds of sea creatures and water samples to measure the garbage patch’s effect on ocean environment.8.What do we know about the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch?A. It is made up of various kinds of plastic products.B. It is a solid mass of floating waste materials.C. It lies l60 000 kilometers east of California.D. It is described as a kind of oceanic desert.9.Why do people pay attention to the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch?A. Because it may prevent the flow of ocean water.B. Because the polluted plastic articles will move up the food chain.C. Because it may be from an island in the pacific.D. Because ships may be trapped in the floating waste.10.Which column can you find the passage on a newspaper?A. Sports and entertainment.B. Media and culture.C. Environment and society.D. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes,it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.According to The Huffington Post,an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill(跑步机),bums more calories because the body is working hard to regulate(调节)its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures-and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in the summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. Itadjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks stroke, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust(尾气) and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.4. How does cold weather benefit runners compared with warm weather?A. They can run more slowly.B. They can take in more calories.C. Their hearts can function harder.D. Their body temperature can get lower.5. How does summer affect runners?A. It builds up their energy quickly.B. It makes runners tired easily.C. It lessens runners' stress.D. It causes heart attack.6. What are the runners supposed to do on smoggy days?A. Stop driving cars.B. Do more exercise.C. Avoid outdoor exercise.D. Run late in the morning.7. What can be the best title of the text?A. Refresh with a Winter RunB. Take Outdoor Exercise in SummerC. Go to Run in a ParkD. Follow the Tips to Reduce StressCOnce you find water, a major issue remains: Is it pure? Is it drinkable? And if not, how to make it drinkable? You can make a water filter(过滤器) from a cone of birch bark(桦树皮).This cone is then filled with layers of sand, charcoal(木炭), grasses, and other materials. Grasses and sand help to trap suspended particles(悬浮颗粒). Charcoal helps to remove chemical impurities, but not bacteria. You may have to pass the water through the filter more than once, depending on the size of the filter and what it’s made of. Generally speaking, the bigger the filter, and the more layers you have in it, the better. The birch bark cone will need to have a fairly small hole in the bottom. The cone will have to be tied with cordage to keep it from opening up. Put a few stones in the very bottom, to help hold your filtering materials in place. Then pour in layers of charcoal, grasses, sand, and possibly other materials that you feel will help to filter out suspended particles and perhaps even bacteria.Once you have constructed the filter, simply pour impure water through the filer, catching it in another container at the bottom. This is basically the “well”method of obtaining water. Dig a hole about 2-4 feet from a water source, such as a river. Allow the hole to fill with water. The water in the hole will likely be reasonably pure.8. How do we get purer water?A.
