30C hina’s Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, knownas HS K or the Chinese ProficiencyTest is a standardized test at the statelevel designed to assess the Chineseproficiency of non-native speakers (foreigners,overseas Chinese and students of Chinese nationalminorities). HS K consists of the basic Chineseproficiency test (HS K Basic), the elementaryand intermediate Chinese proficiency test (HSKElementary-Intermediate) and the advancedChinese proficiency test (HSK Advanced). HSK isheld regularly in China and other countries everyyear. Certificates of HSK will be issued to thosewho have secured the required scores.The new HSK is a standardized test of Chi-nese proficiency, which is mainly designed to as-sess the learner’s Chinese communicative ability intheir life, study and work. The new HSK consistsof written part and oral part, and the two parts areindependent to each other. The written part con-sists of HSK(I), HSK(II), HSK(III), HSK(IV),HSK(V) and HSK(VI), while the oral part con-sists of HS K(Basic), HS K(Intermediate) andHSK(Advanced). The oral test employs recording.HSK (I) assesses the learner’s ability of thedaily Chinese language, which corresponds withInternational Chinese Proficiency Standards band1 and the CEF A1. Candidates who have passedHSK (I) are supposed to understand and use sim-ple Chinese words and sentences, meet the need ofspecific communication, and able to study Chinesefurther. HS K (I) is mainly open to the learnerswho have learned Chinese two to three hours perweek for a semester (half a year), and have grasped150 most commonly used words and relative gram-matical knowledge.HSK (II) assesses the learner’s ability of thedaily Chinese language, which corresponds withInternational Chinese Proficiency Standards band 2and the CEF A2. Candidates who have passed HSK(II) are supposed to conduct simple and direct com-munication about the daily topics in Chinese, reach-ing level A of basic Chinese. HSK (II) is mainly opento the learners who have learned Chinese two to threehours per week for two semesters (a year), and havegrasped 300 most commonly used words and relativegrammatical knowledge.HSK (III) assesses the learner’s applying abilityof the Chinese language, which corresponds withInternational Chinese Proficiency Standards band 3and the CEF B1. Candidates who have passed HSK(III) are supposed to complete the communicativetasks in their life, study and work in Chinese, andable to deal with most of the communicative taskswhen traveling in China. HSK (III) is mainly opento the learners who have learned Chinese two tothree hours per week for three semesters (a year anda half), and have grasped 600 daily used words andrelative grammatical knowledge.HSK (IV) assesses the learner’s applying abil-ity of the Chinese language, which correspondswith International Chinese Proficiency Standardsband 4 and the CEF B2. Candidates who havepassed HSK (IV) are supposed to discuss in Chi-nese about topics from a wider field and able tocommunicate fluently with Chinese native speak-ers. HSK (IV) is mainly open to the learners whohave learned Chinese two to four hours per weekfor four semesters (two years), and have grasped1200 daily used words.HSK (V) assesses the learner’s applying abilityof the Chinese language, which corresponds withInternational Chinese Proficiency Standards band 5and the CEF C1. Candidates who have passed HSK(V) are supposed to read Chinese newspapers andmagazines, watch Chinese films and TV programs,and make speeches in Chinese. HSK (V) is mainlyopen to the learners who have learned Chinese twoto four hours per week for more than two years, andhave grasped 2500 daily used words.HS K (VI) assesses the learner’s applyingability of the Chinese language, which correspondswith International Chinese Proficiency Standardsband 5 and C2 of the CEF. Candidates who havepassed HS K (VI) are supposed to understandeasily the information by reading or listening toChinese, and able to express their own ideas inChinese in both oral and written forms. HSK (VI)is mainly open to the learners who have grasped5000 or more daily used words. What Is Chinese proficiency Test(HSK)By ada wong31E ducation & culturE The Usage of the Results of the HSKHSK RegulationsA person, with minimum passing score in each level, will get a “Chinese Proficiency Certificate” for that level is-sued by the State Committee for the Chinese proficiency Test.With a certificate qualified above HSK Level can at-tend higher institutions of education in China for he or she also courses in science, engineering, agriculture and West-ern medicine; can take the test of HSK (for Business), HSK (for Secretaries) and/or HSK (for Tourism). With a certificate qualified above the HSK Level 6, one can attend the higher institutions of education in China for courses in literature, history and Chinese medicine.A person, with a Chinese Proficiency Certificate quali-fied above HSK Level 9 can attend the higher institutions of education in China to take courses for post-graduates. With a Certificate qualified for HSK Basic, Elemen-tary, Intermediate and Advanced Level, can be exempt from attending the corresponding Chinese courses and can apply for jobs in various organizations of the world, which need working personnel with Chinese language proficiency.The Chinese Proficiency Certificate qualified for HSK (for Young Learners) can be a proving-test to test the exam-inees’ Chinese language level and communicative ability, can test the results of the Chinese language teaching in a school and can be the enrollment reference for the examinees who wish to study in China.Besides, a person, with a Chinese Proficiency Certifi-cate qualified for HSK (for Business), HSK (for Secretaries) and/or HSK (for Tourism), can be exempt from attending the corresponding Chinese courses and can apply for jobs to various organizations of the world, which need working personnel with Chinese language proficiency.1. Test and registration time Confucius Institute Headquarters (National Chi-nese Office) will issue the test date of different test cen-ters at the end of each year. There’s a slight change in test time at each test center. The registration starting date is no later than one month before test date; the deadline is 27 days before test.2. Admission card Test takers will receive a registration confirmation 15 days before the test, then he/she shall either log into the Chinese testing service website and print his/her ad-mission card or get it at the test rmation on the admission card includes the test takers’ name, nationality, gender, type and number of the identity certificate, test subject, test time, test center, test location and test rules, etc.After receiving the test admission card, test tak-ers shall carefully check the information on it item by item to conform if they are accurate. Such information as test takers’ name, gender, date of birth and identifica-tion number must be identical with that on his/her valid identity certificate; otherwise he/she will not be allowed to take the test.If any incorrect information is found, just keep it. After the verification of the examiner, make appropriate modification under his/her supervision and with his/her signature, otherwise test takers’ test results will become invalid.The admission card is an identified proof for test takers. After the test, test takers shall still keep it, for it will be required before the receipt of the score report and test certificate. Test takers also need to provide the number of his/her admission card to view the test results online or get such value-added service as applying for an additional score report.3. Test takers’ photo T he preparation for the photo should meet the following requirements:Format requirements for the photo:- Hand in a photo taken recently with a white background, no hat;- Both black-and-white and color photos are acceptable;- Make sure the test taker’s face is clear;- Show the top of the head and the shoulders;Format requirements for the electronic photo:Type : JPG/JPEG Size : within 100 KB Upload the electronic photo:Test takers log into the registration website and upload the electronic photo in line with guidance from the website to submit the photo. It will appear on the admission card and the corresponding certificate after test. Those who provide electronic photo do not need to prepare the paper photo.If test takers provide paper photo, the format should be:Number : 2Size : 40mm×30mm (in a standard, two-inch form)。
