Lesson 80 文本The Crystal PalacePerhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was the Crystal Palace, which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world, for it was made of iron and glass. It was one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it. A great many goods were sent to the exhibition from various parts of the world. There was also a great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth's steam hammer. Though in those days, travelling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. On arriving in England, they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train. There were six million visitors in all, and the profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges. Later, the Crystal Palace was moved to South London. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt down in 1936.文本解析一〕词汇学习Word study1. profit〔1〕n.利润,赢利;得益:Stores haven't made as much profit as usual〔不行数名词〕The profits from the exhibition this year.今年商店的赢利不如平常多。

新概念第二册80课课文原文Lesson 80The best way to find out about foreign countries is to read their newspapers. If you do this, you do not rely on other people's opinions. You can then make up your own mind about the merits and demerits of the country that you are reading about.I have found, however, that it is more difficult to understand a newspaper than it is to talk to people. It is not just the language that is the problem; the layout of the newspaper is also extremely important. I remember picking up a newspaper for the first time when I was in Germany. I thought I would try to ease myself into reading German by looking at the sports page! I soon became impatient because I did not understand the layout of the page. I could not find the sports page at all. I now know that it is always at the back, but at that time, I was completely at a loss.In this country, as well as in many others, photographs are used to attract people's attention. This is undoubtedly a very effective way of selling newspapers but it can also be very confusing. Good newspapers, I believe, should be seen and not heard. The use of photographs and shouting slogans are for weak newspapers who have little to say for themselves. They cannot rely on the quality of their articles. They, therefore, have to employ other means to attract the reader's attention. Most newspapers in Britain give the affairs of the world an objective treatment so that the reader can make up his own mind about a country or a situation. They also give their readers a greatdeal of news about their own country: local news and news from all parts of the country. They also contain a number of special features, such as pages for women, children and sport.A newspaper is a mirror in which we see our own country. If the mirror is too narrow, we can only see part of our country and this can distort our view of it. If a mirror is large, we can see the whole of our country all at once and we are, therefore, not in danger of getting a distorted view of it. A good newspaper, which gives us an objective view of the world as well as a comprehensive picture of our own country, is essential for all those who are interested in world affairs.。
