Alps in2022,John McAvoy was38kilometres into a very exhausting ultramarathon through rough mountain paths.Battling tiredness,he pushed his body and mind through the final leg of the race. With the finish arch in the famous town of Chamonix just four kilometres away and the cloud-topped peak of Mont Blanc high over him,McAvoy welled up with emotion. In that moment,he felt so free and alive. It was quite the opposite from where his life had been a decade before. He had just been released from prison after serving a10-year sentence.Now40years old,McAvoy has spent the last10years rebuilding his life from one of crime to one with purpose. It was on this day, while running the ultramarathon, that he realized how impactful conquering(征服)this mountain run could be for inner-city kids like him. After all, sport had helped him live a normal life again and open up his world. It could do the same for others. With the help of Youth Beyond Borders,McAvoy started the Alpine Run Project, which recently led12disadvantaged British young people through their own Mont Blanc races. The participants, from refugees(难民)to young reformed criminals and those who grew up in Children’s home, were matched with coaches, consultants and physiotherapists. After a six-month training program, the youth travelled to the Alps to meet up with McAvoy for their race.McAvoy says the highlight of this project for him was watching Yasmin Mahamud,a 20-year-old refugee from Syria, run through the finish arch and into the arms of her new friends. It was a life-changing high for Mahamud,too-inspiring her to keep running, take up martial arts and go to university to study physiotherapy.“It changed my point of view on life, says Mahamud.Pushing herself to complete the race gave her a brief experience of her own potential through hard work and devotion.”I will always be thankful to John for giving me this opportunity and guidance.4.How did McAvoy feel before the finish arch?A.He felt totally collapsed.B.He was peaceful light.People have come to understand the enormous impacts-beneficial as well as harmful-plastics have on human lives and the environment. As polymer(聚合物)scientists committed to inventing sustainable solutions for real-world problems,we set out to tackle the issue of plastic waste by rethinking the way polymers are designed so we could make plastics with recyclability built right in.Everyday items including milk jug, grocery bags, and takeout containers are made from a class of polymers called polyolefins. These plastics are really durable(耐用的)because the chemical bonds in those polymers are extremely stable. In a world set up for disposable(一次性的)items, durability is no longer a design feature but rather a design drawback.Imagine if half the plastics used today were recyclable through twice as many processes as they are now. Also conventional recycling requires careful sorting of all the collected materials, which can be challenging with so many different plastics. For example, separating paper from metal doesn’t require complex technology, but sorting a container from a milk jug of a different polyolefin is difficult to do without the occasional mistake. In a study published in Science in October2023,we described a series of polymers with only two building blocks-one soft polymer and one hard polymer-that behave like polyolefins but could be chemically recycled.Connecting two different polymers multiple times until they form a single, long molecule(分子)creates what’s called a multiblock polymer.By changing how much of each polymer type goes into the multiblock polymer, our teamproduced a wide range of materials with properties that covered all polyolefin types.Using the same strategy but by adding hydrogen,we could disconnect the polymers back into their building blocks and easily separate them to use again. When we made new polymers out of these recycled plastics, they performed just as well as the original materials even after several rounds of chemical recycling. So we were able to create materials with similar properties of the plastics the world relies on.We believe this work is a step toward more sustainable plastics.8.What is paragraph2mainly about concerning plastics?A.Their multiple uses.B.Their chemical properties.C.Their recycling challenges.D.Their classification criteria.9.A key factor of producing diverse multiblock polymers is______.A.mixing building blocks with long moleculesB.integrating chemicals into the two polymersC.combining two different multiblock polymersD.adjusting the percentage of the two polymers10.Which is a feature of multiblock polymers?A.They are made from sustainable materials.B.They can be recycled by adding hydrogen.C.Their reliability outperforms traditional plastics.D.Their properties change with rounds of recycling.11.Which of the following might be the best title?A.Designing for Recycling B.Classifying Plastic WasteC.Replace Plastics with Polymers D.Technology Creates the FutureHiring processes can be thought of as a battle between integrity and dishonesty. You might imagine this is a simple fight between truth-seeking firms and self-promoting candidates, and to a certain extent it is.But companies themselves are prone(有倾向的)to bend reality out of shape in ways that are self-defeating.Start with the obvious wrongdoers:job applicants. When it comes to writing the resume (简历),they tend to massage(美化)reality into the most appealing shape possible.Everyone beyond a certain level of experience is a transformational leader personally responsible for generating millions income;the world economy would be about15times bigger than itactually is if all such claims were true. The average British spends four and a half hours a day watching TV and online videos. But each average job candidate is an enthusiast for public welfare, using their spare time only for worthy purposes, like volunteering in soup kitchens. But the tendency to stretch the truth infects companies as well as applicants. The typical firm will write a job description that invariably describes the work environment as fast-paced and innovative, and then lays out a set of improbable requirements for the“ideal candidate”, someone who almost by definition does not exist.Sometimes, the requirements include an ability to go back and change the course of history.Too few firms offer an accurate account of what a position actually involves in their job previews, which are supposed to give prospective employees a genuine sense of the negatives and positives of the job,as well as a clear idea of the company’s corporate culture. One effective strategy is to lay out in text or video, what a typical day in the role would look like.Such honesty can be its own reward.Research has long suggested that realistic job previews lead to lower turnover and higher employee satisfaction.A paper in2011by David Eamest of Towson University and his co-authors concluded that favourable perceptions of the organisation’s honesty are the best explanation for why.So a process designed to uncover the truth about job applicants would run a lot more smoothly if firms were also honest about themselves.12.Why are“leader”and“enthusiast”mentioned in paragraph2?A.To present a rule.B.To clarify a fact.C.To make a comparison.D.To explain a phenomenon. 13.What does the underlined word“stretch”in paragraph3mean?A.Overstate.B.Overturn.C.Overlook.D.Overestimate. 14.What are job previews expected to be like in paragraph4?A.They show a position as it is.B.They are made either in text or video.C.They are favorable for bigger firms.D.They mainly contain negatives of a job. 15.What does the text mainly talk about?A.Pains and gains of employees.B.How to get the lying out of hiring.C.How to be more appealing in hiring.D.A wrestle between applicants andcompanies. It’s not so long ago that contactless card payments were exciting and new,but thetechnology is already old-hat.The new, better way to pay for things in shops?By using your phone to make a contactless payment.Because traditionally, when you have paid with a card tap(轻敲)or using a chip and pin machine, ultimately the shop you are buying from will be noting down all of your card details. 16And this could be a problem—it means that if the shop is hacked(侵入)or plays fast and loose with its data, you could find your card number exposed to the world. However, when you tap to pay with your device,it generates a unique ID number for that deal and sends that instead. So you can pay for your goods and the shop can get your money.17That is to say, phone payments are smarter.18If a pickpocket steals your card they can immediately use up the money. But if they get your phone, when the phone goes to pay it will typically perform a biometric check-it will ask for a finger-print or use the camera to look at your face,to check that you are who you say you are.19Because of this added security, the limit(限额)is typically higher than for contactless cards. In the UK,it’s around£100for most retailers-though some shops including most supermarkets let you spend much more with just a tap of the phone.Want to give it a try?To actually set things up,go to your Wallet app and follow the instructions.20Then it will automatically recognise the numbers and connect with your ually you receive a text message with a special code on it.And then, well, you’re done. When you pay, hold your phone over the payment machine, and pay for your goods!A.It helps to build the client list.B.The setup process varies with banks.C.No one needs to share any sensitive data.D.It’s also more effective against the threat of thefts.E.And phone payments are increasingly convenient too.F.Typically this starts by scanning your card with your phone.G.Therefore,it knows which bank account to take the money from.二、完形填空My long-distance cycling career of13years and35,000kilometres ended as Iapproached75.Although I am now no longer strong enough to21the long days and big climbs, day in and day out,I have my memories. The road behind is just memories, some soon to be forgotten, others to be22 and enhanced with the retelling.A6000-kilometre cross-country ride initially appears 23,but,once done,it is simply done, much like the challenges that life24.Real25would come when I was alone on my bicycle.I enjoyed meeting and even26the daily targets I had set for myself.I enjoyed the technical challenges faced by tire bursts and loose handlebars,but27not at that time.I loved cycling with a strong tailwind pushing me along and hated28into a strong headwind.I loved striking up conversations with a diversity of people and sincerely appreciated the support and comfort they29.Long distance cycling brings unbearable exhaustion, long hours of anxiety, even fear and desperation, but these30into insignificance, compared to the joy and31 of climbing huge mountains or seeing fantastic sights for the first time. The experiences add newness and32to my life and the memories are33.Most importantly, cycling taught me to know myself better. It eventually dawned on me that I had more34and courage than I ever imagined. The self-awareness and long-lasting memories will give me enormous35as I carry on my life journey. 21.A.appreciate B.choose C.expect D.stand 22.A.treasured B.explored C.created D.discussed 23.A.boring B.annoying C.confusing D.discouraging 24.A.overcomes B.greets C.throws D.ignores 25.A.loneliness B.joy C.convenience D.panic 26.A.making B.changing C.beating D.finalizing 27.A.reasonably B.admittedly C.fortunately D.hopefully 28.A.battling B.slipping C.falling D.wandering 29.A.owned B.offered C.mentioned D.promised 30.A.fit B.pale C.run D.back 31.A.reflection B.anticipation C.satisfaction D.motivation 32.A.secrets B.rules C.decisions D.dimensions 33.A.reliable B.flexible C.inaccessible D.unforgettable 34.A.toughness B.curiosity C.imagination D.wisdom35.A.insight B.knowledge C.power D.admiration三、语法填空阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式Wing Chun is a southern Chinese kung fu style descends from Shaolin Kung Fu.It has the distinction of having been founded by two women,Ng Mui and Yim Wing-chun.The Wing Chun style is known for placing36(emphasize)on technique rather than strength. This style also calls for practitioners to stay relaxed while37 (fight),allowing them to achieve a kind of softness or flexibility. This relaxed flexibility gives Wing Chun fighter38special kind of strength that allows them to bend, not break, just like bamboo.Legend has it that Wing Chun founder Ng Mui was living at Shaolin Temple39 it was attacked and destroyed by Qing dynasty forcers.Surviving the attack, she escaped 40the border area between Yunnan and Sichuan. There she met a young woman 41(name)Yim Wing-chun,who42(final)became one of her top students. 2012专四听写参考答案Nowadays, many of us try to live in a way that will damage the environment as little as possible. We recycle our newspapers and bottles, we take public transport to get to work, we try to buy locally produced fruit and vegetables, and we want to take these attitudes on holiday with us. This is why alternative forms of tourism are becoming popular in the world. There are a lot of names for these new forms of tourism: responsible tourism, nature tourism, adventure tourism, educational tourism and more.Although everyone may have a different definition, most people agree that these new forms of tourism should do the following: first, they should conserve the wildlife and culture of the area; second, they should benefit the local people; third, they should make a profit without destroying natural resources; and finally they should provide an experience that tourists want to pay for.2012专四听力参考答案说明:由于是一次性听力并作答,没有反复斟酌,不能保证答案百分百正确,但是能保证百分之九十以上正确。

Through the tedious process, restaurateurs lacked a unified platform for efficient management. To bring consistency to the unorganised catering(餐饮)industry, childhood friends Arjun Subramanian and Raj Jain, who shared a passion for innovation, decided to partner in 2019 to explore opportunities in the cafeteria industry. In May 2020, they co-founded Platos, a one-stop solution for restaurants with a custom technology kit to streamline all aspects of cafeteria management. The company offers end-to-end cafeteria management, staff selection and food trials to ensure smooth operations and consistent service. "We believe startups solve real problems and Platos is our shot at making daily workplace food enjoyable again. We aim to simplify the dining experience, providing a convenient and efficient solution that benefits both restaurateurs and customers and creating a connected ecosystem, "says Subramanian, CEO and co-founder.Platos guarantees that a technology-driven cafeteria allows customers to order, pay, pick up, and provide ratings and feedback. It also offers goods and menu management to effectively perform daily operations. Additionally, its applications connect all shareholders for a smart cafeteria experience. "We help businesses that are into catering on condition that they have access to an industrial kitchen setup where they' re making food according to certain standards," Jain states.Since the beginning, Platos claims to have transformed 45 cafeterias across eight cities in the country. Currently, it has over 45,000 monthly users placing more than 200,000 orders. Despite facing challenges in launching cafeterias across major cities in the initial stages, Platos has experienced a 15% increase in its month-over-month profits. As for future plans, the startup is looking to raise $1 million from investors as strategic partners, bringing in capital, expertise, and networks. "Finding the right lead investor is the compass that points your startup toward success," Subramanian says.4. What does the underlined word "tedious" in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Time-consuming.B. Breath-taking.C. Heart-breaking.D. Energy-saving.5. What is the purpose of founding Platos?A. To connect customers with a greener ecosystem.B. To ensure food security and variety in cafeterias.C. Platos has achieved its ultimate financial goal.B. Platos has gained impressive marketing progress.C. Challenges in food industry can be easily overcome.D. Tech-driven cafeterias have covered most urban areas.7. What is Subramanian's future plan for Platos?A. To reduce costs.B. To increase profits.C. To seek investment.D. To innovate technology.CWith a brain the size of a pinhead, insects possess a great sense of direction. They manage to locate themselves and move through small openings. How do they do this with their limited brain power? Understanding the inner workings of an insect's brain can help us in our search towards energy-efficient computing, physicist Elisabetta Chicca of the University of Groningen shows with her most recent result: a robot that acts like an insect. It's not easy to make use of the images that come in through your eyes when deciding what your feet or wings should do. A key aspect here is the apparent motion of things as you move. "Like when you're on a train,” Chicca explains. "The trees nearby appear to move faster than the houses far away." Insects use this information to infer how far away things are. This works well when moving in a straight line, but reality is not that simple. To keep things manageable for their limited brain power, they adjust their behaviour: they fly in a straight line, make a turn, then make another straight line.In search of the neural mechanism(神经机制)that drives insect behaviour, PhD student Thorben Schoepe developed a model of its neuronal activity and a small robot that uses this model to find the position. His model is based on one main principle: always head towards the area with the least apparent motion. He had his robot drive through a long passage consisting of two walls and the robot centred in the middle of the passage, as insects tend to do. In other virtual environments, such as a space with small openings, his model also showed similar behaviour to insects. The fact that a robot can find its position in a realistic environment is not new. Rather, the model gives insight into how insects do the job, and how they manage to do things so efficiently. In a similar way, you could make computers more efficient. In the future, Chicca hopes to apply this specific insect behaviour to a chip as well. "Instead of using a general-purpose computer with all its possibilities, you can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that does the job, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient." She comments.8. Why is "a train" mentioned in Paragraph 2?A. To illustrate the principle of train motion.B. To highlight why human vision is limited.C. To explain how insects perceive distances.D. To compare the movement of trees and houses.9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Schoepe's model?A. Its novel design.B. Its theoretical basis.C. Its possible application.D. Its working mechanism.10. What do the researchers think of the finding?A. Amusing.B. Discouraging.C. Promising.D. Contradictory.11. What will Chicca's follow-up study focus on?A. Inventing insect-like chips.B. Studying general-purpose robots.C. Creating insect-inspired computers.D. Developing energy-efficient hardware.DWith the help from an artificial language(AL)model, MIT neuroscientists have discovered what kind of sentences are most likely to fire up the brain's key language processing centers. The new study reveals that sentences that are more complex, because of either unusual grammar or unexpected meaning, generate stronger responses in these language processing centers. Sentences that are very straightforward barely engage these regions, and meaningless orders of words don't do much for them either. In this study, the researchers focused on language-processing regions found in the left hemisphere(半球)of the brain. By collecting a set of 1,000 sentences from various sources, the researchers measured the brain activity of participants using functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)while they read the sentences. The same sentences were also fed into a large language model, similar to ChatGPT, to measure the model's activation patterns. Once the researchers had all of those data, they trained the model to predict how the human language network would respond to any new sentence based on how the artificial language network responded to these 1,000 sentences. The researchers then used the model to determine 500 new sentences that would drive highest brain activity and sentences that would make the brain less active, and their findings were confirmed in subsequent human participants. To understand why certain sentences generate stronger brain responses, the model examined the sentences based on 11 different language characteristics. The analysis revealed that sentences that were more surprising resulted in greater brain activity. Another linguistic(语言的)aspect that correlated with the brain's language network responses was the complexity of the sentences, which was determined by how well they followed English grammar rules and bow logically they linked with each other. The researchers now plan to see if they can extend these findings in speakers of languages other than English. They also hope to explore what type of stimuli may activate language processing regions in the brain's right hemisphere.12. What sentences make our brain work harder?A. Lengthy.B. Logical.C. Straightforward.D. Complicated.13. What is the function of the AL model in the research?A. To examine language network.B. To reduce language complexity.C. To locate language processing area.D. To identify language characteristics.14. How did the researchers carry out their study?A. By conducting interviews.B. By collecting questionnaires.C. By analyzing experiment data.D. By reviewing previous studies.15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A. AL Model Stimulates Brain ActivitiesB. AL Model Speeds Up Language LearningC. AL Model Reveals the Secrets of Brain ActivationD. AL Model Enhances Brain Processing Capacity第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
