Today I am going to introduce my hometown——Harbin.Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Province.【2】Every year the winter in Harbin lasts for about four months, and the average winter temperature can be as low as minus 20 to minus 30 C. Harbin is known as the City of Ice.【3】Every winter when Songhua River is frozen, large cubes of ice are cut and【4】【5】dig out from the river to make ice lanterns (冰灯).【6】【7】Then the whole city is decorated by colorful ice lanterns, and looks very beautiful in the night. Harbin Ice Festival(冰雪节) starts from January 5th and lasts for a month. During that festival, ice and snow sculpture experts from all over the world will gather in Harbin to take part in the international sculpting competitions【8】【9】. Many nice artworks will be created and shown to the public.【10】【11】Every winter a large park【12】will be built on the frozen Songhua River. That is the Ice and Snow World. All the architectures in the park are built of ice or snow. There are【13】palaces,【14】towers,【15】slides【16】labyrinths,【17】【18】and so on.【19】Besides the ice and snow culture, Harbin is also well known for her unique city feature. Unlike most other Chinese cities, Harbin has a variety of European architectures. Even today, the centre of the city has the same layout with Moscow.【43】Harbin is also called Oriental Paris, because there used to be a district that was in Paris style. Harbin was born in 1898, and in the 1920s, she had become an international trade city and one of the financial centres of the north of China.【44】There were 16 countries’ consulates(使馆) and over 30 foreign trade companies settling there.Early in 1929, the French government even planned to build a subway in Harbin.【45】At that time, more than 60 thousand foreigners lived in Harbin. Many wereRussians and Jews. They regarded Harbin as their hometown and made great contribution to the development of the city. They brought in Western culture to the city.【46】China's earliest theater, cinema, orchestra (管弦乐队)and beer factory were all born in Harbin.【47】Zhongyang Street, which was the most famous street, was surrounded by piano and violin music every afternoon at sunset. The locals were also deeply influenced by foreigners’ living style.In 1931, Harbin was seized by Japan. After the long-lasted war, Japanese invaders were finally driven out and Harbin was free again. However, soon afterwards great changes took place. In the Culture Revolution, the European architectures were regarded as the symbols of old society and many were pulled down. Most of the Paris district was destroyed and the subway plan of was never remembered again. Streets were given Chinese names instead of their old Russian names. Foreigners went back to their country. The romantic tradition was forgotten【48】as beautiful music gradually disappeared. Only some Russian food has been preserved and is still part of our daily diet today.Harbin is hard to go back to her unique past, which only exists in old photos and stories told by grandparents.【49】Sometimes I will walk along Zhongyang Streetand think of her lost period of prosperity and romantic.【50】The 1450m long walking street was built in 1898,【51】it is all covered by stones, which cost a lot of gold at that time.【52】TheEuropean architectures on the street has witnessed great changes of the city.
