Table 1 lists the ternary compounds in the systems of the B-FeRE series. In this and the ensuing tables, E stands for exists, N means not found, the question mark ? is not investigated, and X means not possible. In most of the B-Fe-RE systems, the tetragonal compound Fe14RE2B is found [85And]. The prototype of this compound is FelaNd2 B, well known for its high energy product. FeaREHB 4 also occurs in most systems and has in a tetragonal setting two distinct sets of XRD lines with identical a axes but different c axes corresponding to the reflections from the Fe and Nd sublattices [85Bez]. Fe2REsB 6 has rhombohedral symmetry and is a derivative of the A1B2 type [86Dub]. Fe2REB z is a superstructure of the AlnBa type [78Ste]. FeRE3B 7 and FeREB4 have orthorhombic symmetry. The last three compounds occur in the heavier lanthanide and Y systems. The three systems B-Fe-RE (RE = Ce, Nd, Pr) have the same three ternary compounds, and the isothermal sections of these systems show very similar features [92Rag]. As an example, the isothermal section at 600 ~ of the B-Fe-Nd system is shown in Fig. 2 [79Cha]. In three other systems, B-Fe-RE (RE = Dy, Tb, Y), the same six ternary compounds occur, and the corresponding isothermal sections are also very similar. As an example, the isothermal section of the B-Dy-Fe system at 800 ~ is shown in Fig. 3 [83Che]. A liquidus projection for RE = Dy, Nd, Tb and several vertical sections for RE = Nd are known. See [92Rag] for a review of these diagrams.
Iron-based rare-earth ternary alloys with a high energy product came into prominence recently as permanent magnetic materials. Also, a large number of iron-based ternary phase diagrams were critically evaluated and published recently as monographs under the auspices of the International Programme for Alloy Phase Diagram Data. This review presents a brief comparison of the data on crystal structures of ternary compounds and the corresponding phase diagrams for a number of ternary iron rare-earth (RE) X series: B-Fe-RE, C-Fe-RE, Fe-N-RE, AI-Fe-RE, Co-Fe-RE, Fe-Ni-RE, and Fe-RE(1)-RE(2). It is hoped that this exercise will aid in pinpointing discrepancies and planning future investigations on ternary compounds and phase equilibria in unexplored systems.
