His job was to perform marr iages for Christian couples. Unfortunately the Emperor of Ro me didn't allow Christian marriages. So they had to be perfor med in secret(秘密地). Finally Valentine was arrested and put into prison. While he was in prison he fell in love with the daughter of the prison guard. After one year the Emperor offered to release(释放) Valentine if he would stop performing Christian marriages.Valentine refused and so he was killed in February, 270 A.D. Before he was killed Valentine sent a love letter to the daught er of the prison guard. He signed the letter "from your Valentin e". That was the first Valentine.Today Valentines are cards usually red and shaped like heart s with messages of love written in them. On Valentine's Day t ens of millions of people send and receive Valentines. If you tel ephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having bre akfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very import ant and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is at tached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone r eceives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. g uests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before th e party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointme nt too far in advance because plans which are made for a dat e more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderst andings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would t hink of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it wo uld be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a f ew words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.5、What is the main idea of this passage? ________A. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never all ow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability t o grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates gro w, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Social networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversatio ns with friends? In the past the generation gap(代沟) included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy(隐私) that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated(侵犯) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand, we don’t want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignorestheir request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend ly request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.28. Why is it so popular? Perhaps because it’s such a powerful learning tool. One of us hides our eyes and then slowly moves them off. This causes a lot of laughter from a baby, which causes us to laugh in turn. Then we do it again and again.Peekaboo never gets old. Not only does my own baby daughter seem happy to do it for hours, but when I was young I played it with my mum ("You laughed a lot!" she answered by text message) and so on back through the generations. So why is it that babies across the world are always playing peekaboo for themselves? An early theory of why babies enjoy peekaboo is that they are surprised when things come back after being out of sight. This may not sound like a good thing for laughs to you or I, with our adult brains, but to appreciate the joke you have to realize that for a baby, nothing is given. They are born into a puzzle, and gradually have to learn to make sense of what is happening around them. You know that when you hear my voice, I'm usually not far behind, or that when a ball rolls behind a sofa it still exists, but think for a moment how you came by this certainty. The Swiss psychologist(心理学家) Jean Piaget called this theory 'object permanence(持久)' and suggested that babies spent the first two years of their lives working it out. And of course those two years are prime peekaboo time. Looked at this way, the game isn't just a joke, but helps babies test and re-test the theory of existence: that things are still around even when you can't see them. 63.What does the underlined word “prime” in Para.6 mean?A. the firstB. the lastC. the bestD. the worst64.What can we infer from the message of the writer’s mother?A. It was an Airbus Group NV A320 jet, which can seat 180 passengers, was lost at 7:24 a.m. local time—almost two hours after takeoff. The disappearance follows a series of ill-fated flights this year, of which two belonged to Malaysia Airlines. Crashes this year had led to 526 deaths before contact was lost with the AirAsia plane the group said.
