I just got back from the most amazing summer vacation and I can't wait to tell you all about it!It all started when my parents surprised me and my little brother Tommy with plane tickets to visit our cousins in Australia.I was so excited because I had never been out of the country before. The flight was really long, like 15 hours! But the airline had personal TV screens and we could watch movies and play games, so that helped pass the time.When we finally landed in Sydney, my aunt, uncle and cousins Jack and Emma were waiting for us at the airport. It was winter there since the seasons are opposite in the southern hemisphere. We bundled up in warm jackets and headed to their house.The first few days we spent just relaxing and catching up with the family. Jack and Emma took us around their neighborhood to see the sights. Everything looked so different from back home - the plants, the animals, the buildings. One morning we went to this amazing beach called Bondi Beach and I got my first glimpse of the real ocean. The waves were huge!After a few days of resting up, the real adventures began. We took a day trip into the city of Sydney to see the famous OperaHouse and Harbour Bridge. The architecture was stunning. We also went to the Taronga Zoo and saw all kinds of unique Aussie animals like kangaroos, koalas, wombats and platypuses.But my favorite part was when we drove up to the Blue Mountains for a hiking and camping trip. The scenery was like something out of a movie, with towering cliffs and forests of twisted gum trees. We saw crazy wildlife too - flocks offunny-looking birds called kookaburras, gray kangaroos bouncing across the trails, and even an echidna which is kind of like a spiky anteater.Our camping spot was right near one of the biggest canyons. At night we could hear strange bird calls and rustling in the bushes from all the nocturnal critters. In the morning we went on an all-day hike down into the canyon itself. The trail was pretty steep and rugged at times, but it was worth it to see the waterfalls, prehistoric ferns and ancient rock formations down below. I felt like an explorer discovering a lost world!When we finally made it back to the campsite that evening, we were totally exhausted. We roasted marshmallows over the campfire and my uncle told us scary stories about the Yowie, which is like Australia's version of Bigfoot. That night I keptimagining I could hear big furry footsteps sneaking around our tents!All too soon, it was time to head back to Sydney and get ready to fly home. We even wrote our own songs, with deep lyrics like "Pizza, pizza, so delicious, I want to eat it every day!"After a couple of weeks of rocking out, my parents decided it was time for us to get out of the house and do something more productive. They signed us up for a summer camp run by the local community center.At first, I was totally bummed about having to go to camp. I pictured us sitting around a campfire, singing lame songs and doing arts and crafts. But boy, was I wrong!This camp was all about adventure and outdoor activities.
